Extremely unlikely. There would have to be many, many withdrawals.

I don't expect as many withdrawals as Tokyo Games. Hard to reach singles entry who is below 100 in ranking. Also in doubles, players will surely consider the fact whether they choose the option of high ranked doubles player and high ranked singles player will together if they never played doubles together .......

I am wondering how would IOC, ITF and the tennis players react if, for example, they released Women's singles draw and first round might be for example :UKR Kostyuk vs. :BLR Sabalenka . I hope the players will ignore the political part and will fight for their dreams and won't withdraw if they have to play against each other.

Maybe I am too naive at this point. But I think that me and also many other people hope and believe that one day, politics will stop having highly negative impact on the Olympic Games and it will start being the highly peaceful event as it used to be and as Baron Coubertin saw and created such amazing mottos. Olympic Spirit has been with me my entire life and looking at these political nonsenses makes me feel sad. I don't envy those people who pursue their life dream and goals and these things stop them and often they can't do anything about it.

I would say, the lawyers must be ready for the great battle.

The ITF rules clearly say: they can make all that russians eligible as an exception.

But that will only allow the NOC to nominate that player.

And the russian NOC is suspended by the IOC (the appeal was lost). So ROC cannot perform NOC`s functions and cannot nominate players.

Thus every tennis player who loses his/her place at the Olympics because of ITF exceptions for russians will be able to appeal to CAS to get his/her place back.

And nobody can predict the outcome )

Well, this is all tricky. Saying like this, makes me wonder if tennis players would be interested to file an appeal. We have seen that some tennis players are rather interested in well paid tournaments than Olympics. Also golf players. Of course, not all of them. But having hearings with CAS and trying to resolve this problem might waste their time as they may have to withdraw from some tournaments in order to go to Lausanne personally for the hearing. So I am a bit skeptical whether they are gonna do that. Of course, I'd be happy to see Sabalenka, Rublev, Khachanov at the Games but I am afraid that dealing with this issue might be longer for them that they would expect so I am afraid some of them will drop from this issue and focus on regular tournaments.

This is very interesting article 😅😅😅. ITF has allowed Russian and Belorussian athletes to compete in Paris. But at the same time, non of them can do that. As one of the most important rule is to represent your country in Davis Cup or Billie Jean King Cup. And They weren't allowed to participate since 2021. So what now? They will try to apply for an exception? Would it actually work? I am wondering, is ITF playing this game to give the chance to make it to the Games but at the same time, they will find out that they won't make it?

Tennis ITF Australian Open 2024

So :CZE Tomas Machac started in doubles with 0 points in the world ranking before the Australian open. Paired up with :CHN Zhang Zhizhen and they already made it to semifinals. From 0 to 720 points and quick improve from nothing to about 120th place. And if they make it to the final, he will appx. gain Doubles positions around 60-70, a spot where is ranked in singles. This is really impressive. I think this connection will last....

:CZE Linda Noskova beats :POL Iga Świątek in three sets so Zheng Qinwen might well make the GS final now. Top half has completely collapsed.

Linda did not seem to me at the beginning like she could defeat IGA. But she played quite smart tennis. Sometimes conservative and sometimes aggressive. Never shew her temper or anger. I was so surprised by what kind of tactics she followed. I would not give up on her. Yeah, Elina is a tough opponent. I would say it is hard for anyone to defeat her. But so it is with Iga. Let's see what other rounds will bring us 😉

Maybe he is trying to get his doubles ranking up so he can play mixed with his girlfriend, who is certainly not a bad doubles player herself (Siniakova)

Expand

Indeed. I would not be surprised if they were aiming for mixed doubles in Paris. They wanted to play in Tokyo but Tomas was low in ranking so they did not make a cut. Now, he is going higher in singles, also in doubles. So I guess they will play there.

:CZE Brenda Fruhvirtova managed to win the second ITF 25k in Tucuman a week later and just now she beat former French Open finalist :ITA Sara Errani in first round of qualifying for WTA Guadalajara tournament. That's the first WTA victory for the 14 year old! First of many I believe! :p

I am glad that you are watching Brenda. Altogether with her sister Linda, they are amazing. Now, I can't believe that Brenda made it through the qualifier and she will in the main of the WTA tournament in Guadalajara. Just amazing💪💪

I think that this will happen with most players that did not anticipate a nomination. In the end they will have to fill the singles competitions with double players that are already in Tokio.

Expand

Yep, I think something similar like that happened in Rio. I am sure, that :CZE Lucie Hradecká was supposed to participate on in doubles and later was also playing in singles where she lost in 1st round to :DEN Wozniacki .....

Unlikely, but fairly possible.

Also @hckošice Federer's withdrewal means Andrej Martin should enter. Will you accept any further quotas, or will it go to ??Francisco Cerundolo?

Expand

Yes, after Roger's withdrawal, next in the line is :SVK Andrej Martin. Let's see what Slovakian federation says. Wish it works for him ....

It will be very difficult for them to make the combined ranking cut in mixed doubles, despite Siniakova's high ranking in doubles. Of course, we have to see which players will decide to play mixed doubles, but with two wins you get two chances to medal, therefore I think a lot of top players will be tempted to play.

Expand

I agree with this opinion. But their combined ranking should be 146 which gives them descent chances. Let's see. Anyways, can 2 pair from 1 country enter mixed doubles?

Do you think they will be ranked high enough to get into mixed doubles? Only 16 teams can make it

Expand

Yeah, am aware of that. As for COC, I guess they will apply and see. Depends who will wanna play. But Machac is ranked 967th in doubles???. So I would be a bit sceptical. But let's see. Siniakova No.2 in doubles, Machac No.144 in singles. If they make it, probably as ome of the last couples....

Wait, congrats for him but

How the hell?

He was 145. in the olympic ranking. Did we miss like 15 withdrawals since the lists came out? Or did nobody ranked higher accept the reallocation of Cuevas' quota?

Expand

I have no idea. I was also shocked. Next in the line should have been :HUN Balasz and :SVK Martin. But COC has confirmed that they recieved the invitation from ITF for Tomáš Mácháč and they accepted it. Happened today.... I guess ITF has been with the invitation what they want. Or I was thinking whether after withdrawals, they may be contacting countries that haven't qualified anyone yet. Which would perfectly fit to Macháč. All non qualified players in front of him are from countries that have already qualified at least one player. Except :AUT where Novak refused .... :CZE also refused from Veselý on the other hand .... So I am not sure really how but very happy cause he can also play mixed doubles with his GF Siniaková.

:CZE Olympic committee has confirmed qualification to the Olympic tournament of youngster Tomáš Mácháč. They recieved offer from ITF and IOC and later they confirmed that Tomáš will participate! Apart from singles, he may also play mixed doubles with his girlfriend Kateřina Siniaková who will play women's doubles with double French Open champion Barbora Krejčíková.
