ExpandThere was time in the past when it happened, yeah, the attendance was very bad.
Well, the whole idea to have the team champs at EG is wrong. I would certainly prefer a normal Athletics competition like a major continental multisport event would deserve, but what can we do, it is how it is
It also doesn't help that this stadium is HUGE for a team event. 55.000 seats... Even the World Championships will be held in a much smaller stadium, our new athletics stadium has 35.000 seats.
@hckošice Imagine how many spectators would turn up for Div3 and Div2 Ice Hockey if they would be held in the same country where the main World Championships is. "Amazing" idea from European athletics and EOC, now the small countries can compete in a completely empty stadium.
Edited by VektorThis event brings back some COVID memories. As if the pandemic never ended.
We have pretty much the A-team here, only our best athlete, Bence Halász (hammer throw) is skipping this event. The Hungarian federation is using this team event as the main test for Hungarian athletics before the World Championships in Budapest.
Hey @rafalgorka, I was in Budapest very recently and had a chance to go near the stadium (other side of the Danube at Kopaszi gát), so I thought I would share it here.
I took the picture with the shity camera of my shity phone, so yeah, it is what it is. And also, the best view from Kopaszi gát was at an old boat, I didn't plan this to compare the two.
Also, Kopaszi gát was lovely as always. Such a nice place near the stadium.
You get a nice view of the new tallest building of Hungary as well, the MOL Campus, the first structure near the size of a skyscraper in Budapest.
ExpandI plan to go - staying at my friend's home and with media accreditation probably, so my only "worry" is the transport - from Poland it's either flight, but I prefer something less restricted (I mean luggage and all the boarding procedures). So I'll take either the night train (as I don't need any comfort I might even not take the couchette, but sitting place, as the last time) or the FlixBus.
For the food - my favorite one is Retró Lángos at Bajcsy-Zsillinszky u.
Night Train >>> FlixBus
I have done both when I traveled between Budapest and Warsaw. Nothing against FlixBus, but traveling in a bus for many hours or during the night isn't "my thing". It was impossible for me to sleep. I did the night train with the cheapest sitting tickets and it was much better for me than the bus. But obviously the couchette is preferable if you don't want to sit during the night.
Expandhttps://tickets.wabudapest23.com
what tickets would you choose from the available ones? The most expensive ones at the start line or some other in a different part of the stadium?
Well, I have never been to an athletics stadium of this size to watch athletics, so I just went with a higher seat to see everything. I imagine that for the morning sessions it won't matter anyway as the stadium won't be full, so you should be able to go to wherever you want, depending on what kind of event is happening.
Maybe other users are more experienced with this stuff. Athletics is unique because the action is happening all over the place in the entire stadium and it's a quite large space. Maybe @Adriano knows more about this.
Expand@Vektor thanks, i will go there to see this place.
when asking about best foods&drinks in town i obviously didn’t think about fancy restaurants, michelin stars etc. 😉
i thought about nice places where locals go… hungarian cuisine is definitely one of my favourites!
Well, I usually had homemade Hungarian food because it's cheaper that way.
For tourists the most obvious answer is the Central Market Hall:
It's very close to the stadium, only 15 minutes from there with Tram 2 . Google Maps
For now I am only planning to attend on Aug 20 as I don't live in Budapest currently, so I only bought tickets to those two sessions. I might change my mind later, but I didn't want to buy tickets to other sessions in advance. I am guessing that there will be tickets available anyway even during the summer if I change my mind.
Well, @rafalgorka, the truth is that I am not that much of a drinks and foods person, in a sense that I never searched for the best places when I lived in Budapest as a uni student. But I did visit all the movie theaters there because that's where my priorities lie.
Anyway, you should visit Kopaszi gát, it's literally next to the athletics stadium on the other side of the Danube: Google Maps
It's a really nice place to take a walk. You should also be able to take picture of the stadium and the Danube there.
Edited by VektorTicket pre-sales for WCh 2023 have officially started.
It looks like the tickets for the morning sessions are cheap (3000 HUF), tickets for the evening sessions cost 23000 HUF, 18000 HUF, 13000 HUF and 9000 HUF. A pass for all the sessions costs around 100000 HUF.
Oh man, $54 for the finals... I mean, that's not that expensive, a ticket of a Hungarian international football match costs the same, and I will pay it, but will 30.000 Hungarians pay that kind of money per evening? I doubt it, Hungarians don't care that much about athletics.
I got an email from World Athletics which says that subscribers to "The Inside Track" will receive a code to purchase tickets for the 2023 World Championships from 10h00 CET on 9 December until 23h59 on 11 December. The general sale will start on December 12.

300 days to go (hopefully...), tickets will be on sale by the end of November.

100 final on our national holiday (Aug 20). That evening session will also have the men's hammer throw final with a Hungarian medal chance, so the stadium will certainly be full.
Surprisingly wonderful ECh for us. 2 silver and 1 bronze medals and a completely unexpected 4th. Now let's hope for some similar surprises next year in Budapest.
Damn, so close to a surprise medal in javelin... The 4th place is great as well, but not like this.
Four Hungarian 4th places today in Munich and no bronze medals...
ExpandKind of a retro 1949 feel, don’t you think? Wheat! Busty muscly ladies! OK, no iron foundry or big moustache, but still.
Yeah. It's based on Budapest's Statue of Liberty:
Btw, they also revealed the qualification system and the entry standards: https://assets.aws.worldathletics.org/document/62ff627cef4200119b5555be.pdf
Wtf, bronze in race walking? That's a historic medal for Hungarian race walking!
ExpandSparse crowds. Qual sessions in Birmingham were 80% full.
Mayer injured!
Well, sparse crowds are still better than no crowds, which is probably what you will see in Budapest next year at the qual sessions. (Seriously, athletics isn't a Hungarian sport at all, I am not sure how we will fill those 40.000 seats at the 2023 WCh.)
That's going to be a very short ECh for Mayer.
Now that we don't have Bolt and Phelps anymore, and Biles couldn't compete, I think Kipchoge might be the "MVP" of Tokyo with this amazing race.

Well, I hope their powerhouse will be enough for fill our house in Budapest because we will need all the help we can get to fill the stadium at the World Championships.
Hopefully thousands of Polish fans will come. It's kinda ridiculous that Hungary will host the WCh in Central Europe instead of Poland, we care waaaay less about athletics.
