Holzer suspended To miss game in 2017 The IIHF Disciplinary Panel has issued a one-game suspension to German defenceman Korbinian Holzer. Holzer will miss the first preliminary round game of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The suspension comes as a result of a pair of violations that occurred during Germany’s quarter-final game against Russia. Both violations occurred during the third period of Thursday’s game. The first incident occurred at 52:46, when Holzer skated behind Russian forward Vadim Shipachyov in front of the German goal, delivering a cross check to Shipachyov who subsequently fell to the ice. After Shipachyov got up onto his feet, Holzer speared him in the lower part of his body. Later at 55:25, Holzer was in front of the Russian goal together with Anton Belov, before butt-ending the Russian defenceman in the stomach with his stick. After conducting a review, the Disciplinary Panel determined that Holzer’s actions were in direct violation of Official Playing Rule 121 (Butt-Ending) and Official Playing Rule 161 (Spearing). Both actions were dangerous and reckless and show unsportsmanlike behavior and warranted additional disciplinary action in the form of a one-game suspension.

IIHF grows in Asia Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines new IIHF members The International Ice Hockey Federation grows to 77 countries after Indonesia, Nepal and the Philippines have been admitted as new associate members. Ice hockey has been played in Indonesia, the largest island country of Southeast Asia with over 13,000 islands, since 1996 and been organized by the Federasi Hoki Es Indonesia for several years. Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most populous country with 258 million people, more than half of them living on the island of Java. That’s where the country’s three ice rinks are located. There are currently five senior clubs and three youth hockey clubs teams involving 112 players. The Sky Rink on the third level of the Mall Taman Anggrek in Jakarta Barat was opened in 1996 and has an ice sheet of 1,248 square metres. In recent years two more rinks opened with Gardenice (800 square metres) in Bandung and the 24-on-55-metre BX Rink at the Bintaro Jaya Xchange Mall in Tangsel in the Jakarta region that has become the country’s premier ice sport facility. “Becoming a member shows to everyone that anything is possible. A winter sport can grow in tropical countries, more ice rinks can open and more people could enjoy the thrill of ice hockey sport,” said President Joko Widodo. “Our saying here is: the first time you try ice hockey, you will fall. The second time you try ice hockey, you fall in love.” Nepal is a landlocked country with over 31 million inhabitants in the Himalayas area with China bordering in the north and India in the south. With an ideal climate for ice hockey, the country wants to start organizing the sport in the country. Currently there are no ice rinks but four outdoor inline hockey rinks in the capital of Kathmandu, Pokara, Ilam and Kavree. The association was founded in 2014. Nepal Ice Hockey Association President Lok Bahadur Shahi handed over a symbolic present to IIHF President Rene Fasel in form of a Khukuri knife, a symbol of Nepalese independence. “With the support of the government and the IIHF, we are looking to build a new chapter in Nepalese sports with ice hockey,” he gold IIHF.com recently during a visit at the IIHF headquarters in Zurich and hopes that the first ice rink can soon be built in the capital Kathmandu – the land has already been acquired. In 2017 the Southeast Asian Games are set to have an ice hockey tournament for the first time ever. The event that has taken place biannually since 1959 will take place in Malaysia and with Indonesia and the Philippines joining previous Southeast Asian IIHF members Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, all these countries could potentially enter a team. In addition to accepting three new members, the Qatar Ice Hockey Federation – until now an associate member – has been awarded full membership.

Tournaments assigned Men’s Division I to Kyiv and Belfast The 2016 IIHF Annual Congress assigned the tournaments of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship program and the Women’s Olympic Qualification. The top division of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in the men’s category has been awarded for the next four years to Cologne, Germany, and Paris, France, from 5-21 May 2017, to Copenhagen and Herning, Denmark, in 2018, to Bratislava and Kosice, Slovakia, in 2019, and to Zurich and Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2020. The 2021 edition will be awarded in a year. The Palace of Sports in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv will host the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A from 22-28 April 2017. The city’s traditional venue for ice hockey event most recently hosted an Olympic Qualification event in 2012. The bid got the majority vote against the one from Austria with a city that would have been determined later. The two relegated teams here in Russia – Hungary and Kazakhstan – together with Poland, Austria, Korea and host Ukraine will battle for two spots in the top division for Denmark 2018. Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom, was named host of the tier below, the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group B, from 23-29 April 2017. The bid supported by the local authorities and the Belfast Giants won against the one from Tallinn, Estonia. The event will be staged in the 7,400-seat SSE Ice Arena that was recently refurbished. “The last World Championship held in the UK was almost 25 years ago,” said Ice Hockey UK Chairman Richard Grieveson. “We believe we are now well-prepared and experienced to deliver a first-class Men’s World Championship tournament.” In the U20 category the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship with the top nations will take place in Montreal and Toronto, Canada, from 26 December 2016 to 5 January 2017. The tier below was assigned to Bremerhaven, Germany, which won with its bid against Almaty, Kazakhstan. The 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division I Group A will take place from 11-17 December 2016 with Belarus, Austria, Kazakhstan, Norway, Germany and France battling for promotion. The Division I Group B will take place at the new Tuskecsarnok rink in Budapest, Hungary. The IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championships of the next two years were previously awarded to Poprad and Spisska Nova Ves, Slovakia, 13-23 April 2017 and to Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk, Russia, in 2018. The application from Sweden for the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship was accepted by Congress with the cities to be determined at a later stage. The 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship with the top nations will take place in Plymouth, USA, 1-8 April 2017. The Division I Group A event in the women’s category will be staged in Austria – either in Graz or Linz – from 15-21 April 2017. The 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship was awarded to Prerov and Zlin, Czech Republic, which successfully hosted the event in 2012 and set an attendance record that was only broken this year by St. Catharines, Canada. While the top-5 teams of the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Ranking – USA, Canada, Finland, Russia and Sweden – as well as host Korea are already qualified, two more teams will be searched. In total a record 30 countries entered teams for the Olympic women’s ice hockey tournament and the qualification process. In each of the groups in the four-stage qualification the top-seeded team had the right to host the event, which was executed in most cases. This means that Switzerland will host Group C of the Final Olympic Qualification set to take place 9-12 February 2017 that also includes the Czech Republic, Denmark and a qualifier while Japan hosts Group D with Germany, Austria and a qualifier from the preliminary round. The cities will be announced later. On the men’s side the preliminary rounds were already played this season and the Final Olympic Qualification is set to take place from 1st to 4th September 2016. Belarus will host Group D at Minsk Arena with Slovenia, Denmark and Poland. Group E will be hosted by Latvia at Arena Riga with Germany, Austria and Japan. And Group F will take place at the classic Jordal Amfi rink in Oslo with host Norway, France, Kazakhstan and Italy. Due to the dates the teams will have the possibility of using their NHL players. The top-8 teams of the 2015 IIHF Men’s World Ranking – Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland, USA, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Slovakia – as well as host Korea are already qualified and will be joined by the three tournament winners. 3-on-3 OT in 2017 Overtime, shootout format adjusted The 2016 IIHF Annual Congress approved changes in the IIHF Sport Regulations including the overtime and shootout format. As of the upcoming season, the overtime and shootout format will be changed in top-division events of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship for men’s, women’s and junior categories. In the preliminary-round the overtime period will be played up to five minutes with three-on-three skaters. If still tied, a shootout with three rounds and if necessary tie-break shots will take place. In playoff games (except for the gold medal game) the overtime period will be played up to ten minutes with four-on-four skaters. If still tied, a shootout with five rounds and if necessary tie-break shots will take place. In the gold medal game the overtime period will be played up to 20 minutes with five-on-fiveskaters. If still tied, a shootout with five rounds and if necessary tie-break shots will take place.
