Before the Beijing Olympics, the central government in China designated each province to train a different sport. In the USA, this is not possible. There, each state has its own independence, and training is based on universities. This cannot be centrally controlled but this is the only way to clearly beat China.
I know about that strategy. Also, China is doing great work in youth sports, even children sports. USA doesnt do that.

Ok, but once upon a time divers from the USA, Canada, or Russia were able to beat the Chinese, but since the beginning of the 21st century they practically can't anymore beat him. What has changed since then?
I believe that referees or judges are hugely biased in diving. They were giving 10s for more than average dives.
Also, i really dont know why other nations cant learn how to enter water without so much splashing. Its also a huge factor why China has so much advantage over other nations.

I wonder if anyone is able to compete equally in diving with China? Maybe they should try to change the rules to make the competition more equal? Competing only for 3rd place in individual starts is a bit boring, and there are a lot of such competitions there. Table tennis is not that big of a problem, because there are only 5 events, I think.
Table tennis started to be more competitive, Chinese men started losing more regularly, so its interesting to watch.
Diving was interesting until Paris as we always had at least one gold medal not be claimed by China.
This time dives were boring as we already knew who will win even after 1st dives.
IOC must change something because if 8 golds are won by the same country more than once, something is fishy.
Who could endanger them?
Not so sure. I had hopes in Mexico, Ukraine, GB but they are just to weak.
I can bet that with this system we will have 8 golds for China in LA too.

I don't think the US system is fragile. It's more that the United States is facing increased competition in their traditional sports (Australia in swimming, Canada in athletics, etc.). Meanwhile, China continues to dominate in its preferred sports (diving, table tennis, etc.).
Winning almost dozen medals less than in London or Rio speaks contrairly.
But i agree, China doing their job with 100% success doesnt give many options to USA.

Still not too sure that US will lose. US will probably lose when today ends but there are still basketball and volleyball tomorrow
Its hard to win or even hope when 4 down when games are almost over.
I have no doubt about basketball but gold in volleyball isnt sure at all. Italy was great whole tournament.

It`s not an authoritarian country that tried to cover up its internal problems by winning a lot of medals at the games, e.g. the USSR, the DDR, etc.
Maybe not an authoritarian country but USA uses this medal table in broader sense than just sportive one. I have no doubt about that. Olympic success was and will always be used in many other causes, politic ones too.
China is expanding in all sports, USA loses dominance in their traditional strongholds.
But i agree, China does know where are their best opportunities and uses that to the max.

I am neutral here but USA needs to change something.
Only time, AFAIK, when China topped the medal table was in 2008.
In Rio USA had 40 + golds, China less than 30.
In Tokyo China was down by 1.
Now, USA will 99% lose this battle.
System in USA is obviously fragile in all sports.

wonder what is US chances in wrestling
Just 2 opportunities left.
Kyle is great, his career speaks for itself, he is def gold prospect.
Blades probably wont win in 1/2f.

China will lead by 4 golds. I dont think USA can handle that.

Kurek is angry.

France can't be beaten today. This level of blocking is insane.

Denmark really struggles with Slovenia.
I think Slovenia beat them in ECh 2024.
Now, Henson should retire with a gold.

Well done boys, great match!
I still think Serbia had USA.
Bitter sweet feeling but overall, proud.

This referee was absolute fail.
VAR was absolute fail.
Penalty was a nice gift from Brazilian but to be honest, Spain defending 45 minutes was a disastrous call.
So, France deserved OT.

I managed to watch that same dive only because i was watching rhythmic gymnastics and women's handball.
He entered the water like a total beginner. Plus, technical errors while in air.
