  1. I recommend we could start put together the team rosters for major Luge nations. What I have for the moment: Italy was already mentioned here USA Singles: West, Mazdzer, Morris (M) // Britcher, Hamlin, Sweeney (W) Doubles: Mortensen/Terdiman, Krewson/Sherk Canada S: Edney, Malik, Watts (M) // Gough, Apshkrum, McRae (W) D: Walker / Snith Austria S: Egger, W. Kindl, X (M, last to be decided after Lillehammer) // Prock, Platzer, Egle (W) D: Penz/Fischler, Steu/Koller Germany S: Loch, Langenhan, Ludwig (M) // Geisenberger, Eitberger, Huefner (W) D: Eggert/Benecken, Wendl/Arlt Could anyone put here some info on Latvia? Did not find anything recent on their federation site, even in Latvian Any info on the composition of the Russia / OAR team? One can know for sure that T. Ivanova will not be included due to her Olympic ban, but nothing else
  2. As per fil-luge.org: "Berchtesgaden (RWH). The International Luge Federation (FIL) has been informed by Disciplinary Commission of the International Olympic Committee about the decision in the proceedings against Tatyana Ivanova and Albert Demchenko. The Anti-Doping Commission of the FIL will contemporary deliberate in a hearing the further process. This was published by the FIL office on December 23 in Berchtesgaden." http://www.fil-luge.org/en/news/anti-doping-commission-of-the-fil-to-deliberate You are right about A. Demchenko, if "convicted" by FIL, he might be banned as a coach from World Cup as well.
  3. Hi, First of all, Merry Christmas to everyone! Would like to ask about the recent IOC decision, where more Russian athletes, among them lugers, were sanctioned: https://www.olympic.org/news/ioc-sanctions-11-russian-athletes-as-part-of-oswald-commission-findings - Lugers Tatyana IVANOVA and Albert DEMCHENKO, silver medallists in Sochi 2014 They have been banned from all Olympic Games subsequent to Sochi 2014. Obviously, in practice this does not affect Albert Demchenko, who is no longer active (as an athlete) But what about Ivanova? Is she banned also from World Cup competitions subsequent to this decision, or only from Olympics?
  4. I would agree with cutting the rhytmic gimnastics and synchro swimming based on the reasons mentioned above. As regards to boxing, wrestling and weightlifting: here the problem is not that those sports are there but the way their olympic competitions are run which simply compromises their integrity. Take for example boxing: I totally agree with the poster who said that a final warning should be sent to AIBA to tackle the allegations of manipulation, corruption and so on. Same with weightlifting but the issue of doping. On wrestling: in many matches of this Olympics the refereeing was simply scandalous. I could name at least for countries which were systematically disadvantaged on this way. Also it is a joke that matches are decided by cautions given at random or by sport diplomatic considerations. If there is a tie there should be e.g. extra time to decide the match. In sum: after the decision the exclude wrestling was reversed in 2013, the intl' federation should now understand that the Olympics is not a place for sport diplomatic point scoring or advancement of special interests as it undermines the rationale of "getting back" wrestling despite the original IOC decision. In case of sports whose popularity is totally uneven by geographic regions (like rugby, field hockey, water polo and mens water polo in particular) the relaxation of geographic protection or the waiving of host country automatic quota place might be considered. In this way we would see more even or closer matches. In water polo the group stage should be reworked completely. It made no sense in its current form (particularly in women's tournament where everyone made it to the knockout stage), and as the rank after group stage decided which opponent they face in rd 1 of the knockout stage, there was ample possibility of "tactical defeats" in order to get an opponent they would like (as it actually happened in men's tournament) The place of water polo is not the safest one in the Olympic program, so to say, and it cannot afford "own goals" like this
  5. Also in team sports, there might be some who "retired" from their respective national teams but did not quit competitive sport. This is the case for example for the aforementioned Gabor Kis of Hungary in water polo (he will not play any more for the national team but continue playing for his club)
  6. I really believed in the 3 womens gold for . And they did it! hckosice: I think many in Hungary have mixed feelings about Rio. (I mean the whole not only canoe kayak) On one hand, amazing performance from the 2 three-time champions (Kozak and Hosszu) and the fencing team (2 G 1 S 1 B), some positive surprises like the young swimmer Kenderesi (winning bronze medal in his first olympics after beating Phelps in the heats and semifinal) or the shot putter Anita Marton (first womens medal in athletics since 1968) On the other hand: - handball team did not qualify (neither W nor M) - HUN swim team was about 35 strong, and many strong names who very expected to have a good performance (at least IV-V-VI place) did not even make it to the final, along them 2012 champion Daniel Gyurta - Disappointing performance of the judo team (along with some referee "mis-judgement") - Disappointing performance of the wrestling team (along with open _cheating_ by one of the referee's on a HU bronze match) - Disappointing performance of the mens waterpolo team (for the second olympics V/VI place) - Disappointing performance of the mens canoe-kayak team (see above) + this is not directly sports related: absolutely sub-par commentators on Hungarian public TV covering the OG, with exception of athletics and fencing and a few other disciplines. The guy who covered canoe-kayak sometimes had no clue about what is happening on the track... But I personally would like congratulate to all Hungarian athletes who had a good performance at Rio, no matter what place or medal or whatever!
  7. According to some stats from today, the last time the flag-bearer of Team HUN won a gold medal was in 1948! After 68 YEARS Aron Szilagyi did it again!!!!
  8. Same for me, even during the ECh and Wch I supported her, also because she is from the Baltics (I like the Baltic states). But even more now, considering the situation with her opponent... So go Hungary! Go Lithuania! :))
  9. Wohooo! She did it! This will be a great story, as this was the 169th gold medal of HUN, and Katinka Hosszu (in swimming) is on track to win the 170th !!!
  10. I dont know Hungary is "Eastern Europe" or not, but i think Hungarians only care about gymnastics when there is a Hungarian medal chance like last Olympics. Apart from Russia and ex-USSR, I think it's Romania where gymnastics is really more popular. But our American colleague has a point too: NBA (along with NHL) are the American major sports which are more followed internationally, so, obviously, much more ppl outside the USA know about or can recognize famous NBA players than, say, NFL or MLB players.
  11. Hungarian-Polish tower (together with Turkmenistan [?] it seems)
  12. The Rio 2016 app is up and running now with final content (instead of that about the olympic torch) For Android it required an update through Play Store for me (none was required on iOS)
  13. OK, I believe you (did not use free VPN in the past, just tried out this Hola as it was mentioned in this thread) in this case I'm not even waiting for the OG to begin, got the account with VPNUnlimited right now.
  14. But who needs that? BBC webcasts are viewable without restriction if you have a VPN (even the free Hola VPN that was mentioned in this topic) or there is the Canadian CBC at: http://olympics.cbc.ca/ it was accessible with VPN during the Sochi Olympics so I think it will be the same now. Both provide good quality English coverage. NBC in the past used to require not only an american IP address but also cable TV subsriber info. So you couldnt use it even with a VPN. Here is some more info about VPN access: https://thevpn.guru/watch-rio-2016-olympics-free-online-without-cable-live-stream-vpn-dns-proxy First I will try the free Hola VPN to see if it works during the Olympics before giving out money for a paid VPN account For the latter, https://www.vpnunlimitedapp.com/en/ might be a good choice. For Sochi I used www.ipvanish.com
  15. But one also has to consider that a gold medal at the Olympics is a much "bigger thing" for India or Indonesia than even for smaller European countries like Hungary (let alone US,UK, China, Germany, France, etc.). In my ctry it was considered a catastrophe that at Beijing we only won 3 golds. To put that in perspective this is exactly the half of the total gold medal haul of Indonesia from 1960 to 2012 (all of them in badminton). India has 9 gold medals to date from 1920 to 2012 (8 of them in field hockey)
  16. I tried Hola VPN (free), mentioned in this topic today, and can confirm it works with BBC iPlayer and rai.it. Dont know how fast or slow it will be when the OG are on...
  17. The previous posters are right, for example on Hungary's page it says 151 athletes qualified for the OG, while according to my recent information it is 158 or 159. For some nit-picking: the site says "Hungarians are strong at fencing and the canoe sprint". For the first, WERE or USED TO BE is the appropriate word
  18. I am from Hungary and on one of the sports websites here every commenter was laughing on that prediction.
  19. Dont worry. With a VPN account (about 7 or 8 euro for one month) everyone is able to watch the bbc internet streams (or any other freely accessible stream from public television websites). During the winter olympics of 2014 I mostly watched webcasts of Canadian public television as the Hungarian TV showed very little apart from the ice hockey tournament. But for now they have two 0-24 HD channels (M4 Sport and M5) to show the Olympics plus a not yet told number of webcasts. But I think I will still need that VPN for next month to watch the BBC or Canadian Public TV web-casts
