I was looking at ranking across sports for our players/ teams . I think we can consider those in top 15 to have some chance of getting among medals at Rio, these are the players who are ranked within that range -

Shooting
Jitu Rai - 3rd in 10M air pistol, 2nd in 50 m pistol
Abhinav Bindra - 13th in 10M air rifle
Gagan Narang - 11th in 50M rifle 3 positions
Mairaj Ahmed Khan - 9th in Skeet

There are 2 more shooters - Sanjeev Rajput and Pooja Ghatkar who are among top 10 but are not part of Rio squad.

Archery
Womens team - 4th
Deepika Kumari - 12th
Laxmirani Manjhi - 15th

Badminton
Saina Nahwal -5th
PV Sindhu - 10th (9th among those qualified for Rio)
K Srikanth - 11th (9th among those qualified for Rio)

Tennis
Mixed doubles - there are no world rankings for mixed doubles. But if there were, I am sure Rohan-Sania would be among top 10.

Boxing
Shiva Thapa - 6th
Vikas Krishnan - 6th

Wrestling
Narsingh Yadav - 9th
Yogeshwar Dutt - 9th
Vinesh - 13th

Mens hockey team - 5th ( For a team event, I do not consider top 15 as having a chance of a medal , therefore not including 13th ranked Indian womens team)

That makes it a total of 17 events.

To this I would add -

Tennis mixed doubles- there are no rankings for those but if there were I am sure Rohan-Sania would be in top 10.
Gymnastics- Deepa Karmakar was 5th in the last world championships in vault
Weighlifitng - Meerabai Chani has the 4th best lift this year.
Archery - Atanu Das finished 4th and lost to the world champion Korean in the last world cup
Shooting - Gurpreet Singh in rapid fire and 10M pistol, Manavjeet Sandhu /Kynan Chenai in mens trap, Apurvi Chandela/Ayonika Paul in womens 10 M air rifle, Gagan Narang- 10M Air rifle, Heena Siddhu in 10 M air pistol - all have won medals in world level events in last couple of years. So, considering the variability of results in shooting, they can shine on a given day at Rio.

I am not including anyone in athletics despite some staggering results by mens relay ream and mens jumpers.

So, it would make a total of 28 in starting lists with a shot at a medal.

However, uncertain part is most of them would require to improve on their rankings/ current position and over perform to finish among medals. Our athletes did that in London where we had even lower medal contenders. If they do that again and about 1/4th of the above do that , we may be looking at improving our medal tally above the London tally of 6.
The downside is if everyone performs exactly as per their rankings, we may end with 2-3 medals too.

Realistically, we are looking at a range between 2-8 medals for us at Rio.

I hope the more optimistic scenario materialises.

Just to add on to above posts... its fair ranking can be a criteria to judge the potential. But for shooting - its way more unpredictable than even boxing

For instance:  Moldoveanue who won 10m Air Rifle last time was ranked outside top 30 then!
A quick glance at 50m3P shows Sanjeev at 8th (a straight jump from 66th based on a single good showing in Gabala) whereas Campriani at 17th.

Fully agree. Ranking has less of a meaning in shooting. But, still some indicator of current form of the shooters. For instance, on their day even the likes of Apruvi Chandela, Heena Siddhu & Chain Singh can spring a surprise but their current form has been poor which reflects in the rankings.

We need some surprises in shooting. I think if we have to exceed our London tally of 6 medals, we need at least 3 medals from shooting.

  • Latest Posts around Totallympics

    • Italy will boycott the Azeri stage for protest against the international federation.
    • Likely for Tannheimer, quite unlikely for Galmace Paulin. She's far from being assured to even start in the WC before turning 20. Basically she'd have to get a spot this season, which could actually happen if she takes the extra-ticket at the JWCH. Anyway I don't see her making her way to gold in Oslo. Tänglander has a few seasons to do it, we'll see.       Quite surprisingly so, indeed. Barring her horrendous finish Richard would have made it 2 in one go. We should have some more names in the list in 2025.
    • There are some of Slovakia's finest young squads at the World Juniors in recent years
    • Alpine skiing also we have a lot of problems: the men's team is very weak and has been winning a few podiums a season for several years and the our best skier- Dominik Paris is 35. We still have a strong women's team but 3 of the 4 leaders are over 30 (Goggia, Brignone, Curtoni) and Bassino is 28. Another 2 years and we will have the same problem as the men's. There is basically no cross-country skiing without Pellegrino for many years, biathlon is based on 2 individuals with one of them has a 35 years. Vittozzi's injury was enough and we haven`t a single podium this season after 3 stages of the World Cup. As for 1 year to the home games the situation isn`t optimistic.
    • Hail to the Reds... Commanders. First time since 1991 Washington QB has thrown 5 TD passes in a game (which isn't all that improbable in the modern game alas Dan Snyder...)
    • Italy is much better in alpine skiing, in The end all Nations have a Limited Talent Pool. Norway is far better than Sweden/Finland in Cross-Country skiing, alpine skiing and Biathlon, but Sweden/Finland are far better in ice Hockey.  Great Britain wins far more medals than Germany At Summer olympics, but GB is also inexistant in Winter Sports and Most popular Team Sports (Volleyball, Handball, Basketball, Ich Hockey).
    • Thanks, great stat! Tannheimer wont turn 20 until August 2025, so she has The whole Season To Join Kristiansen and Neuner. Too Bad that she was ill this week. I think Galmace Paulin and Tänglander could also do it. I think Grotian (born 2004) is The First female Biathlete born after 1999 To make a World Cup Podium. On The Mens side multiple Athletes (Perrot, Giacomel, Uldal) have already done it.   E. Öberg was 22 and a half when she First won.  Dahlmeier was 21 and a half.   Edit: Grotian only narrowly missed The Podium in The Individual at The 2024 World Championships when she was still  19 year old.
