Modern Pentathlon 2016 Discussion Thread

I am still surprised Slovenia does not compete in this sport.

First olympic medal took Rudolf Cvetko in 1912 (Fencing), I know you are familiar with our Swimming (Sara Isakovič) and Athletics (Primož Kozmus, Jolanda Čeplak, Brigita Bukovec,...)  medals. Do not forget about our experiences in shooting (Rajmond Debevec), and we even have very good training facilities for Equestrian (Lipica, Celje,..).

So, it is really strange not competing in this event.

BTW, as many of you I am also extremely dissapointed on media production of this wonderful sport. As we would still be living way back in 20th Century.

Champion of Champions - sounds great and some people are trying to make it great. In my opinion "it's all about the money" as it is hosted by Qatar, that seems to want to develope in as many sports as possible. This year's edition was won by two Germans - Annika Schleu among women and Patrick Dogue among men. There were many notable names on the start list - Schöneborn, Kovács, Murray, Prokopenko, Kasza, Belaud, Cooke, Zillekens, Demeter, Svoboda and others. But not many - all together 15 women and 19 men. It's a strange time for pentathlon competition - most of the athletes are still on holiday or just back from it and only started trainings. And this year this event was at the same time as an annual coaches conference in UK, so some coaches also missed it.

First ten personalities have been introduced to the UIPM Hall of Fame. They are:

  • Baron Pierre de Coubertin (FRA): Founder of the modern Olympic Movement and creator of Modern Pentathlon
  • General George Smith Patton (USA): 5th place in the first Olympic Games Stockholm 1912
  • General Sven Thofelt (SWE): Gold medal in Amsterdam 1928, UIPM General Secretary
  • William Grut (SWE): Gold medal in London 1948, UIPMB General Secretary and long-serving UIPMB President
  • Pavel Lednev (USSR): Bronze medallist in Mexico 1968 and Munich 1972, silver medallist in Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980; pentathlon legend
  • HM King Constantine (GRE): UIPM Honorary Patron, gold medallist in sailing, Rome 1960, Olympic Academy
  • Andras Balczo (HUN): Gold medallist in Munich 1972, active in the social movement after retirement
  • Juan Antonio Samaranch (ESP): IOC President (1980-2001) who opened the door for Modern Pentathlon to include women in the Olympic programme in 2000
  • Stephanie Cook (GBR): First women's gold medallist in Sydney 2000, now a respected doctor
  • Zsuzsanna Voros (HUN): Gold medallist in Athens 2004, now a pentathlon coach

Today starts the 68th UIPM Congress, we'll see, what it brings.

    • Broke down some numbers of what is still in doubt: For 3 sleds men and women are done. For two sleds there is no competition left in men's (  doesn't enter a WC race and secures two?) but in women's its  Erlacher vs  Channel and Erlacher needs to finish probably four positions ahead in final WC race.   For one sled, in men's, Takahashi or  Yaw will have to enter a EC or WC race for the first time this year, or it is over. Even if they do they have to gain about 50 points over their current 7th best result, so they would need to score about 100. So men's probably done, unless  Buff does not compete again, even then he could still make it.   The women's final few placements could be chaotic and will really depend on who decides to race where on the final weekend. Looking at current 7 best results  Schmied has 492,  Johansen has 493,   Delka has 524, and  Burger has 538. For Delka to miss out then the lower two need to both finish top 20 in a WC or I think top 7 in a EC. They both have a 7th best score of 36 they have to improve on, and who knows if Delka will race one more time or not.
    • will have 5 representatives in Luge at the 2026 Olympics.      Jozef Ninis (Top pic) in the M Singles will compete at his 6th consecutive WOG !!! He debuted in Torino 2006 to close the circle in another Italian resort in 2026, by this he set the new Slovak Winter Olympic record of participation and tie the all time one with Erik Vlček competing at 6 games in Sprint Canoeing as well.   The remaining quartet (Pic 2) will debut at the Olympics, all still Juniors Christián Bosman & Bruno Mick in the M Doubles and still schoolgirls Viktória Praxová & Desana Špitzová in the olympic premiere of the W Doubles     Must also be said, that we were quite unlucky in this qualifiers periode, Marián Skupek missed the second M Singles quota by 1 point and ended first non-qualified athlete and the experienced doubles Vaverčák/Zmij which was in clear qualifying position ended the season after Vaverčák injured his knee in the training before the Sigulda race 2 weeks ago   Also for the first time no W Singles participation for us meaning also obviously no participation in the Mixed Relay competition for the first time as well   Team (Updated as of 12th January 2026) 40 Athletes (30 M + 10 W)

    • Yea she did not meet the minimum points. Since the event doesn't have enough qualifiers, its possible the FIS still grants her a quota
