Team GB Daily: Day 16

Traditionally we are strong in events where russia are not, rowing sailing track cycling, i think other countries may benefit more from them not being here than us.

They would certainly take golds off japan in wrestling (judo?). A couple from australia in swimming maybe, we'll never know but interesting to think about in a paraell universe

So take this with a huge grain of salt because it is only my opinion, but I reckon that 88 of our 135 top 8 finishes have a strong chance of being back in LA.

Of that 88, 40 of our 65 medalists could reasonably return, including 12 of our golds.

My vague methodology to work it out was removing anyone who would be over 30 in 2028, or potentially even younger in some sports (ie swimmers and gymnasts sometimes retire competitively by the time they are 25). I've also positively included teams like rowers, where we always seem to find someone who will be at least competitive in most disciplines. Same with athletics relays etc.

I've been cautious in my thinking, erring on the side of ruling someone out if I thought there was any doubt.

Obviously there will undoubtedly be some of the athletes who will make it who are older and some younger who won't. But it is a good starting point to consider. This definitely was not a team of grizzled veterans.

Don't worry I'm on it.... Scope will be anyone who made quarters or top 10 in a final I'll actually look up ages! See you in 2-3 hours.

(Yes I am extracting it from Wikipedia and not manually typing in everyone)

I don't hate Bach nearly as much as everyone else on this forum seems to

Agreed that there are countries that would be hurt more but our total medal haul would be affected for sure. Gymnastics probably the most obvious sport where we would definitely lose medals to them.

I will say, it seems our prediction was only partially accurate - 10 28 year olds placed bronze, so perhaps less hope for LA. I'll do Gold and Silver ages after some food

@Mkbw50 have the final totals been tallied?

Curious to see if I am the epitome of the games with a solid performance, a glimmer of hope and finishing in a resounding 4th place to a strong set of competitors!

  • Latest Posts around Totallympics

    • Sinner destroyed Baez and we are still alive If I were Volandri, I would have Sinner and Berrettini play in the doubles.
    • Fewer people do do this sport compared to the 90s, less money is spent on it, etc. In the case of women, at some point this sport was almost abandoned because of the belief that it was impossible to beat Scandinavia ( the times of Norwegian domination with Bjoergen and Johaug at the forefront). Only in the last 2 years has Markus Cramer been hired, who is gradually rebuilding the men's and women's teams. Suffice it to say that the last medalist of the World Championships for Italy in the women's was Arianna Follis in 2011... I will also remind you that in 2022 Pellegrino and de Fabiani trained with the Russian team, because the rest of the Italian team was in such poor shape that they couldn`t train together
    • Well that is a totally different question  I too have wondered what happened to Italian cross-country and how there is no one coming for so many years. But it shouldn't take away from the sports where progress has been made.
    • Where to Watch guide.  Discovery plus in most of Europe       https://www.ucitrackchampionsleague.com/watch-the-races
    • Appetite grows with eating. Especially since it's not like we develop in every winter sport... For example, 20 years ago we were a powerhouse in cross-country skiing and now we have only 1 Pellegrino (34 age) and a few talented youngsters. And let's remember that our performance in Turin was objectively weak for us: only 11 medals in total. Now, when I hear that we will to win 2O+, some discipline must definitely add medals and also compensate for the losses in cross-country skiing, for example.
    • The problem is that this mixed team has never played together since then. There was talk of personal obstacles. I don't know how it`s now.
    • Well that explains why she is wearing more clothes with every passing day.   Nevertheless that team is still one of the best in the world and is a vast improvement on what Italy was doing 10-20 years ago.
    • Any idea where a full schedule can be found yet? I remember last seasons the website was always godawful in terms of providing that basic kind of information..
    • Constantinis team have made huge improvements since 2022 even if they are not best yet. And Constantini never was world leading in mixed doubles before Beijing olympic either so it is not like she really have lost anything since 2022 either, except not being able to repeat that success.
    • She had health problems yesterday. Nevertheless, after the gold in mixed doubles with Mosaner in 2022, I counted a bit more on her development. I still think that the biggest chance for us in 2026 will be the mixed team, rather than our teams.
