Power Rankings

17th May 2023

Wow ! Who saw all this coming?
After beating three nations in regulation time – including a 4-1 win over defending champion Finland – to open the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, the U.S. takes over first place in our second Power Rankings.
The Swedes move up to second place, relishing their hard-fought 2-1 shootout victory over their Finnish archrivals.
And the Swiss surge into third place with a remarkable run of three shutouts versus Slovenia (7-0), Norway (3-0), and Kazakhstan (5-0).
Rest assured we’ll witness more excitement and surprises as the preliminary round rolls along in Tampere and Riga!

    • Thanks for the amazing work on the spreadsheet. If my eye's read correctly you expect  to get a quota in Sprint (M) canoeing . This will be historic, if time permits could you elaborate a bit please. What are the chances we get to hold on to the quota place ? Is their a risk of missing out? Thanks! I don't follow canoeing much so had a hard time simulating the qualification scenarios. Thanks!

    • It looks like the IIHF is sticking with 3-on-3 overtime for all events moving forward.     BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    • Although it was a terrible Olympics for Canada, and my two favourite sports (Hockey and Short Track) really didn't work out for us, there were a couple of fun times.    -Women's Pursuit team winning gold because while it was not unexpected at all, it was still a great triumph against an amazing adversary.    -Dubreuil getting a surprise bronze in speed skating 500m.    -Really all of speed skating, Canada and otherwise.    -I really want to say Dubois getting gold in short track, but the whole thing was a mess.    -The last two ends of the men's curling gold medal game.    -Kingsbury getting gold. But it was more relief than excitement, unfortunately.    -I really like the luge relay. Canada was not involved, unfortunately, but it's always fun to watch.    -Men's freeski big air final was nuts! In all the good ways. That was truly the highest level of competition I've seen in a very long time.    -The dog crossing the finish line in cross country, which should have been the meme of the Olympics (not that...other thing).
