Strong winds: Fan Zone in Kosice closed today

The second IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship fully hosted in Slovakia is in full flow. The games of the first days did not bring any bigger surprise. Everything goes according to the plan, and the representatives of the Organizing Committee are satisfied.

However, the weather worries the organizers as the forecast for the following days is not favourable. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute even gave a first-level warning regarding strong wind in whole area of Slovakia, effective on Monday, 13 May. According to the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute, the wind can cause minor damages and is potentially dangerous for people.

“The safety of the fans is on the first place for us. We are constantly monitoring the weather development and are in touch with meteorological institutes. We have decided to close the fan zone in Kosice today due to the danger related to strong wind,“ said the Lukas Donoval, Director of Partnerships & Special Projects of the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Organizing Committee.

“According to the current weather forecast of the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute, the wind speed can reach 25 metres per second, which is 90 kilometres per hour, and is classified as strong gale. The wind can become even stronger in the afternoon. We have been dismantling the small stands, removing the brandings, and securing the main stage in the Fan Zone in Kosice since this morning, so it will resist the wind,“ said Donoval.

The performance of the band IMT Smile was on today‘s schedule in the Fan Zone in Kosice. The performance is cancelled. The band will perform on 19 May in the Fan Zone in Bratislava instead. The organizer is trying to find a substitutive programme for people in Kosice.

The organizers stress that these measures are inevitable for safety reasons and apply only to the official Fan Zzone in Kosice on Monday, 13 May. The Fan Zone should be open again on Tuesday, 14 May, from 14:00. “We believe that the weather will improve and the Fan Zone in Kosice will open again,“ added Donoval.

The fans have loved the Fan Zones in the two cities so far. They have become a place of great atmosphere also for fans who don’t have tickets, but a number of fans won tickets for games in the arenas already. The organizers released 700 tickets for Slovak national team games for the the competition. The entrance to the official Fan Zones next to Istropolis in Bratislava and in Kulturpark in Kosice is free. Both Fan Zones will be opened until the end of the championship. More than 35,000 fans have visited the Fan Zone in Bratislava during the first three days, while the Fan Zone in Kosice was visited by more than 28,000 people.

    • Yep. Not sure if it was the NOC or the biathlon federation (I assume the latter) that put him in the Livigno training 'world' with a former Italian biathlete as coach, but they can definitely also be blamed:  almost everyone involved in that shitshow got the motivation just sucked out of them by the methods and shitty atmosphere until they either retired or changed country
