ExpandNext week (next Thursday) we will know if the NHLers will play at the Olympics. NHL will release its next season schedule, they are working now with 2 versions, one with a 2 week break (for Olympics) and one without break (No Olympics)...
IOC agreed to pay 11 millions for the insurance and travel costs, NHL now stepped back because fear of coronavirus and eventual quarantine of infected players returning from China...
Well, I have already been working with the scenario that Beijing 2022 will be postponed till 2023. My contacts from OC have not replied yet but volunteer page no available, tickets not released yet..... I am afraid they have already been working on this scenario..... So this NHL decision might be pointless if this counts for 2023...
ExpandNo idea. maybe they would just leave it as it is, maybe just the highest seeded team from the second place will then qualify as well, or the best second team from all final groups would advance. But frankly, Rather, I think they will no longer interfere to prevent total chaos. China will have this direct quota and they will just hope and believe that they will not impede their reputation and that no one will hold them accountable.
I would also guess that it might the best team in second place. But we still have at least half an year for the final decision. As for China, I think they will also consider the reflection on their country in a political way. As I said, there would be a lot of critics from public if for example China lost to Canada even just 0:11. Of course, from IOC would be fair if they did reallocate their quota to a better team. But China has been trying to improve and I think if they saw that the Olympic Games matches would have ended up bad, they might even withdraw the quota themselves. Chinese people are very proud but I believe this move would also make a difference as they are trying to be more world friendly. I am really curious how this topic ends.
ExpandWere really lucky in 2019 to not drop down to II B, survived by 1 point against
, I watched the games. it was between them, the rest was miles ahead. if not covid cancellation last year, pretty sure they would be already back in II B this year
also mentioned they wanna naturalize some foreign players. But I am pretty sure that most of the citizens would critsize this step. Because China's government would be playing against their own rules/laws. In other words, they are too proud to do this. And with locals, they haven't developed enough in ice hockey to face the world best teams. They need at least one more generation. That is why I think the quota should belong to another country. For me,
is playing amazing games at WCH this year, but already failed to qualify due to very unexpected loss against
. Well, let'ss how this goes .....
ExpandI hope Canada destroys them..
Maybe then they will surrender the "two Michaels" jk
I truly hope IOC has enough common sense and based on their "progress" within past few won't let them participate and reallocate the quota to the country that really deserves to play the Olympic tournament.
ExpandSouth Korea was indeed working hard to prepare for the tournament, naturalizing 7-8 north americans and recruiting all famous players with korean ancestry like Jim Paek as coach. they had been showing a nice game for a few years before the tournament, they really tried to show that their host quota place was justified. they put a lot of money and will into it. I can not say a single bad word about them, even if now 2 years after, the whole work is gone, the popularity, interest and support of hockey totally evaporated there.
But what is the most important. A year before the games they were a Division I A team which even qualified by merit to the Top division that year, in opposite China is struggling in far far lower divisions level
South Korea did great job not only by naturalizing some players but also making a strong team. 7 foreign players cannot make a good strong team. If you read about current chinese national team or at least list of those trying to make chinese national team, many of them are foreigners who were given the exception to hold 2 citizenships (China normally does not allow this) and trying to make the national team. What I checked last time, there are many naturalized Canadians and Russian. But as far as I know, none of them made it to any major league. So I guess they may be some kind of village league players which is surely enough for chinese national team but surely not enough for WCH division A or Olympic tournament. China has promised some stuff they will achieve before the Olympics but nothing happened. In my opinion, IIHF and COC must make some kind of deal about it. Otherwise, it will be a huge shame for the whole country. At least chinese people would feel a big shame about. They have way more chances in other sports. That is where they should focus during the upcoming Olympics. And they should leave ice hockey to those who can actually play and deserve to play around the rings way more than some unskilled chinese players or naturalized village league foreign players.
