Am I complaining? I just wish she comes back to shorttrack, because in speedskating she won't medal (or even qualify) in speedskating.

Fontana also has no chance in speed skating but she compete there. I don't know for what purpose? By doing so, she limits her chances in short track even more, which are currently small. I can't believe she doesn't want to win a medal after 20 years at home.

That's so true. Suzanne Schulting, please come back to shorttrack!

You shouldn't complain anyway. Back then, in short track, Holland didn't matter at all in the world, even in Europe they were weak. Go back to 2006... In Europe there was Radanova, Italians and nothing, and the world was even further ahead.

Poland used 100% of their chances and even more. Fontana had 3 chances to win medals and ended up with nothing. For Italy, this is the worst World Championship since 2019: 2 medals is a poor result. The Olympics are not organized to win fewer medals than before.

I'm really scared by the number of 4th and 5th places for Italy this year. We're getting to 20... Even statistically, 2/3 should turn into medals. I don't know how you can be so unlucky. Only 8 medals in this winter and over 15x 4/5 places but then someone from Canada said that they are unlucky... At the OG/World Championships that 4/5 place is the worst, because it doesn't give you anything. I'd rather have 24 or 25.

Which would be worth the try, I'd say. There isn't that much of a difference between silver and bronze, but between silver and gold....oh yeah :p (or bronze and 4th, of course)

Sighel has a character that he doesn't calculate, but always attacks for gold. Sometimes it ends in falls or DSQ. Sighel at the European Championships last year in the mixed relay attacked Holland in the fight for gold, but he fell and Italy was out off the podium. These are always dilemmas, because in the relay you skate with your colleagues, not alone and in this way you deprive them of a certain medal.

Sighel took a big risk on the last turn. Luckily there was no PEN. You can take such risks at the World Cup, but at the Olympics you can lose a certain silver to attack for gold. Today in the relay there are the big 5: Can, Kor, Chn, Ned and Ita. So it will be a terrible fight even at the semi-final level. The Italians are a bit miss a 4 skater: Antonioli is a level lower and I think we have to count on Previtali's progress until next year. Today, for the first time since 2022, Fontana showed great skate. There is some hope for the future, but the level is insanely high.

The competition is now more fierce than in the case of Fontana 4-8 years ago and secondly, Sighel doesn`t have to be a star of her caliber. He is strong, but there are a dozen or so like him. Short track is so unpredictable and lottery-like: falls, dsq etc., that counting on only 1 competitor at the Olympics can end very bad. And individually we can only count on Sighel + possibly the weaker Fontana in favorable circumstances. Canada or China have 3 candidates for the podium in the men's and then dsq of one doesn`t mean the end of chances for medals, like in our case.

Give her some time. I think she will grow into the season and seeing how many different skaters already have won medals in the first two weekends of the season, I don't see why Fontana couldn't be one of them. She's been incredibly close this weekend with two A-finals in her first event back.

Expand

I simply believe that at the age of 36 she will no longer be in her peak form, and only such form would allow her to fight for medals. And Schulting will also come... On top of that, she plans to combine short track with speed skating? I don't see that at this age. As of today, I see the greatest chances for her in 2 relays and a mass start on a long track.

I'm afraid that at such a high level Fontana will have a hard time individually winning any medal in 2026. She has a great start in the 500 meters, but she loses over the distance and it's hard for her to stay on the podium. In the 500 meters, with this form, Velzeboer is out of reach, because she leads from start to finish. However, over longer distances the competition is even greater, even though there is no dominant competitor. I don't have the impression that Fontana is capable of rising to such a level as to fight for medals individually, although of course one can always count on falls and dsq in the top.

The Netherlands without Schulting can field 2-3 more strong and young skaters and we have been relying solely on one Fontana for a dozen or so years, who is 34 and still the best of us. Although I doubt she will ever win anything on an individual level again. Unfortunately, we miss generational change and 1-2 skaters at the level of, for example, Desmet or one of the Americans. I`m not talking about Fontana, because we will haven`t someone like that again for the next 100 years.

Sighel is unfortunately in poor shape. He doesn't shine and lets himself be overtaken in a childish way. Those 2x4 places are still beyond his actual level. The women's team, despite winning yesterday in the relay, unfortunately doesn't have a single athlete capable of fighting for an individual medal under normal conditions and that won't change. This was already visible at the last World Championships, when Arianna Fontana was the best Italian in every competition after 2 years without starts. It doesn't look good. Maybe Valcepina will come back in the 500 meters but unfortunately none of the youngsters are able to make visible progress.
