FIFA ranking

India climbed to 101:yesAmong Asia it is 11

The Indian National football team has done it. After 18 years, India has accomplished it's highest ever position, after climbing to 101st place in the recently published FIFA Rankings of March, 2017.

The Blue Tigers have accumulated a total of 331 points. The last month's total saw them net just 233 points. The team from the subcontinent has risen 31 places on the ladder, second only to the Republic of Macedonia.

The near historic rise in rankings has seen the team leapfrog the Democratic Peoples Republic (DPR) of Korea, Thailand, Latvia, Jordan and Iraq to name a few. In fact, India is tied on points with Estonia, Lithuania and Nicaragua.

Take these rankings with a bucket of salt. I doubt if we can even draw games against North Korea, Thailand, Jordan or Iraq. We will get a good idea of where we are at Asian level only in Asian Cup 2019 (we should have not much trouble in qualifying).

Leander was bound to be dropped with Bhupathi becoming non-playing captain. IMHO, either both Paes/Bopanna should be retired keeping future in mind or both should be played for their experience. But, as long as Bhupathi/Paes/Bopanna are even remotely involved with Indian tennis, they will ensure that team is always divided in camps.
