Men's Ice Hockey IIHF European Champions League 2020 - 2021

Recommended Posts

the new hockey season starts today with the 2020/2021 Champions Hockey League Draw...:bounce: :cheer:

because of the covid-19 emergency, we have a new format, with the competition starting later than usual (October rather than August) and playing all the competition rounds with the direct elimination head-to-head matchups over 2 legs (Home & Away, aggregate score counting, as usual) until the Final, which will be played as always over one single game (February 9th, 2021...if everything goes well :fingers:)...

CHL Draw: Frölunda, Luleå and Zürich enter as top seeds

The 2020/21 Champions Hockey League season will be launched later today with the Draw to establish the Round of 32 matchups and the path to the Final.

Follow all the action via our livestream on Wednesday at 18:00 CEST on the CHL’s official digital platforms.

The live show, which will be broadcast on both the CHL website and on the league’s official social media channels, will be presented by Jann Billeter, anchor and reporter for Swiss national broadcaster SRF.

He will be joined on stage by CHL President Peter Zahner and CHL CEO Martin Baumann who will draw the 32 teams randomly to create the 16 pairings that will battle it out to start the season.

Ahead of the CHL Draw, all qualified teams have been allocated into two pots according to their achievements in their national leagues and the respective league’s standing in the CHL League Ranking.

Reigning CHL champions Frölunda Indians (SWE) sit atop the rankings, and are therefore the highest-seeded team, followed by the regular season winners of the six Shareholder Leagues: Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, the Czech Republic and Austria.

Draw Rules

There will be two pots containing 16 teams each.

Pot 1: Teams ranked 1-16

Pot 2: Teams ranked 17-32

The seedings are based upon the CHL Ranking Tool.

Draw order: Teams from Pot 1 will be drawn alternately at random against teams from Pot 2.

The Draw will provide the Round of 32 pairings.

As the pairings are drawn, they are placed in the Playoff Tree, starting with the top-left bracket, followed by the top-right bracket, the third pairing will be placed in the bottom-right bracket and the fourth in the bottom-left bracket.

Clubs from the same league cannot be drawn into a Round of 32 pairing.

Should a league conflict occur, then the club in question will be placed in the next possible pairing available, determined by the help of software.

No further Draws will take place; the Playoff Tree leads the teams from the Round of 32 through the Round of 16, the Quarter-Finals, the Semi-Finals and all the way to the Final.

2020/2021 CHL Draw explained

2020/21 Playing format

In the 2020/21 Champions Hockey League season, a total of 61 games will be played over the course of nine game days between October and February.

The season will start with an immediate knockout Round of 32, which will comprise two-game, home-and-away, aggregate score series up to the Semi-Finals.

The season culminates on 9 February 2021 with the ultimate one-game Final to determine the European club champions.

very, very sad news...especially when considering that Slovakia is a true Hockey Nation, if there's one...

I hope this is only a period of a certain kind, with all the troubles related to the covid-19 emergency and everything gets back to usual enthusiasm as soon as possible...:fingers:

under an Italian perspective, not the luckiest draw for Bolzano Foxes...

despite being in the Pot #1 (with all the top 16 european clubs), they have to face already in round #1 a team from the Swiss League...and nothing less than the revelation of the last couple of seasons in that tournament, a team that could also make the CHL quarterfinals last year, where they lost only in the OT to the eventual champions Frölunda Indians...:nopompom:

and should they make a miracle and win the series against Biel/Bienne, the second round could end up being a clash against the CHL reigning champions from Sweden...

    • I will try for Croatia:    Archery (1) : we never had a representative, but were two times very close. I think we have a chance in Recurve for a single male quota, and in mixed compound,  Realistic one quota    Athletics (8) : difficult as many things will change in the next 2-3 seasons, but let's. say 8, I think that could be a realistic number   Badminton (1) : hopefully our Indonesian import will manage to qualify     Basketball (0): small chances in both male and 3x3 male teams , but somehow I doubt it    Boxing (2): two male quotas    Canoe slalom (1). maybe with a small chance for two places, but one is realistic    Canoe sprint (1): similar to slalom, maybe two, but one is realistic, but lets see how the new qualification system plays out    Cycling (2): would bee very happy with a quota in BMX freestyle and male road race    Diving (1): hoping that Matej Nevescanin will qualify    Fencing (0): very small chance in mens foil, but I guess will not happen.    football (0): there is always talks about our male team, but never succeeded, I am afraid will be the same for LA 2028    Artistic gymnastics (4): Kovtun plus two additional male quotes plus one female   Handball (14): the mens team should qualify    Judo (5): four female quota plus one male    Rowing (5). difficult to say as boats/crews are not defined yet. But I expect 4 mens places plus 1 female. Maybe more, but let see    Sailing (6): somehow not a good development in this sports, could be even less than 6 quotas.    Shooting (5): hopefully two trap and two male rifle quotas plus one surprise    Swimming (6): will be brave here and say 5 male plus one female. I think we have a realistic chance to qualify a freestyle relay.    Table tennis (5): hope for 3 male and two female quotas incl. mixed doubles (Arapovic/Ban)   Tennis (6): still too early, and always the question who is really interested in playing.   Taekwondo (3): I am seeing two females plus one male qualifying   Waterpolo (11): mens team should be safe, small chance for our women's team.   Wrestling (1) considering the Russian expansion, one quota would be great     in all other sports hopeless case for Croatia. But 88 would be a great delegation, probably too optimistic
