Ayala Arellano with a superb sprint to win the men's road race. (Dourado Da Silva and Silva Areujo Gomes) had perfect positioning the final u-turn before the finish, but Ayala Arellano had the better kick. -

In 2023, there were 2 medals: Bellandi and Tavano on the final day, but then the European Championships were in the end of year. Hopefully, Bellandi wins gold tomorrow. Russia is back on full option and Georgia is probably investing half its national budget in this one sport. See for yourself who wins medals here... Only France, a great power, is very good here. -

Spring Nationals, Day #5 women's 50m Breast: Benedetta Pilato, 30.13; Anita Bottazzo, 30.20 (European Champs QT) men's 50m Breast: Simone Cerasuolo, 26.51; Martinenghi and Viberti out for injury; everybody else over the 27-sec mark women's 400m Free: Simona Quadarella, 4.03.59 men's 400m IM: Jacopo Barbotti, 4.16.01 women's 200m Back: Alessia Bianchi, 2.11.27 men's 1500m Free: Gregorio Paltrinieri, 14.58.03; Marcello Guidi, 14.58.30; Ivan Giovannoni, 14.59.21...event in disgrace, the open water specialists are now dominating it over the supposed pool specialists (Paltrinieri was at his first pool meet in the last year or even more, he basically abandoned the 800m & 1500m after Paris 2024, using the pool races only as a training for the open water competitions...and still wins it all ) women's 50m Fly: Sara Curtis, 25.89; Silvia Di Pietro, 26.09 men's 4*100m Free Relay: best splits: Carlos D'Ambrosio, 48.05 and Manuel Frigo, 48.49 (1st leg); Thomas Ceccon, 47.76 and Leonardo Deplano, 47.78 (internal legs) so, the 2026 Spring Nationals are over... not the championship I expected: many disappointing clockings, a few injured/sick swimmers that could have improved the level of the tournament, very few youngsters really breaking through to the international level the only positive notes: Sara Curtis (4 titles, 2 NRs -even close to the top of the world ranking- but still too many troubles to manage the 100m free); Emma Virginia Menicucci (improving herself despite losing a lot of training sessions because of a car accident and giving the women's free relays a new perspective); the new name in the 200m free and in the IM races, Jacopo Barbotti; Simone Cerasuolo (definitely our new no.1 breaststroke specialist, now capable to swim also a very good 100m and not only the 50m) I'm sure the team will be more than ready once the European Champs start, but right now they're really making it difficult to be optimist about the Summer
