Potential Comparison 2024 vs 2020

Archery : 4 vs 4, no addition

Athletics : 32 vs 26, +6

Badminton : 7 vs 4, +3

Boxing : 6 vs 9, -3

Equestrian : 1 vs 1, 0

Fencing : 2 vs 1, 1

Hockey : 16 vs 32 , -16

Golf : 4 vs 4 , 0

Gymnastics : 1 vs 1 , 0

Judo : 1 vs 1 , 0

Rowing : 3 vs 2, 1

Sailing : 2 vs 4, -2

Shooting : 21 vs 15 , 6

Swimming : 2 vs 3 , -1

Table Tennis : 6 vs 4 , 2

Tennis : 3 vs 3 , 0

Weightlifting : 1 vs 1 , 0

Wrestling : 8 vs 7 , 1

Total 120 vs 122, -2

Fair assessment,

Archery can go up to 6 (+2) if we qualify both teams .
On the other hand Fencing could be 1 (-1)

We may not get anymore shooting quotas from shotgun so it remains 20 (-1)

Wrestling is the big doubt we might not get 4 more , possibly 2 more . (-2)

So final figure could be 118 (-4) in 18 sports if we get the gymnastics quota.

Which will be brilliant considering we didn’t qualify women’s hockey team ( -16) .
Potential to cross 175+ for LA 2028 with Cricket + both hockey teams.

Still have hope for LM2x qualification. In 2023 World Championships, the last spot was taken by :MEX who did 6:26.49, then it was :BEL with 6:28.49, then :NZL (6:28.66), :GER (6:31.08). While pair of Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal Jat did 6:28.18 in Asian Games and 6:30.11 in Asian qualifiers, so we can assume they can do 6:30 again.

Also :BEL hasn't won a quota yet and is entering European qualifiers in LM2x event.

FYI there are two quotas available for Final qualifiers

So fingers crossed!!

In rowing the timings are not always the best indicators, as a lot of external factors affects the race. Weather, course , wind speed etc

Lets hope the rowing federation fills up forms for them to participate in the world qualifiers. If memory serves me right we didn’t send a team for last world qualifiers for Tokyo qualification.

I am aware of that rowing timings are based on natural factors and thus there is no 'World record' similar to athletics as no two courses are the same. I only mentioned we have a chance of additional quota and there's no harm in participating in last qualifier

I think it will be Priyanka plus one of the men. So maybe one additional quota. Which one do you reckon? Maybe Arshdeep will focus on this event & not individual one.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board. This will be the eighth time the session is held in Italy, the last one being during the Turin 2006 Olympic Games.
