In handball, the women's national team did not compete at the South American repechage tournament for the 2023 World Cup, due to lack of budget.

Unfortunately, this is not unusual at all here...

A lot has happened since I last logged in at Totallympics.

- o -

Yesterday, Uruguay won the Fifa Under-20 World Cup, defeating Italy 1-0.

- o -

The Teros 7s finished 12th at the World Series.  At the London repechage, the team defeated Kenya and Tonga, and lost to Canada. However, Kenya defeated Canada, and the Teros missed the final on aggregate score. Therefore, the team was relegated for the 2023/24 season along with Kenya and Tonga.

This weekend, Uruguay will host the South American Sevens, which is a qualifier to the 2024 Olympics.

Last Friday, Peñarol defeated the Dogos to claim their second South American Super League, er, Super Rugby Americas.

- o -

In field hockey, the Cimarronas were runner-up in the Pan American Women's Hockey5, and qualified to the 2024 FIH Women's Hockey5 World Cup.

In rugby, the Teros 7s won the South American Sevens played at the Estadio Charrúa last weekend, and qualified directly to the Olympics.

The team played very well except at the final match. They made a few mistakes, but Chile did even more. Murphy's law it seems.

Fun fact: the previous two appearances on Uruguay in Olympic team sports (not counting doubles) were men's football in London 2012 and men's basketball in Los Ángeles 1984. Plus basque pelota in Barcelona 1992, which was a demonstration sport.

    • I still shocks, that a country of 4-5 million inhabitants? can be a powerhouse in almost every winter sport + handball, football (most recently with Haaland) and athletics: Ingebrigtsen, Warholm, etc. With such a small population, they can't be missing out on any major talent, surely? This must be the best training system in the world...
    • FIFA announced the stadium and time for each match   for  Iran, it will be 2 matches in LA (and not just 1) and 1 in Seattle and luckily we avoided playing in Canada. absolutely nothing against the country, but there are just too many douchebag Iranian groups in Vancouver trying to mix everything with their stupid politics. it's better to stay away from them.   that can happen in US too but less likely. playing in LA is more like playing at home, at least I hope so. 2022 Qatar was a disaster from our point of view, hopefully this one remains only about football.
