honestly the only thing that will change is Ukraine which will be top 4

This changes nothing from what we have now, but if I'm not mistaken there are theoretical chances for Spain to take the quota if for example Algeria or Mexico will fall under 16th place and there'll be some reallocation spots.

Fencing FIE World Cup 2023 - 2024

So, according to my calculations, these 11 foil female fencers will try to snatch the second European quota by ranking:

:HUN Flora Pasztor, Kata Kondricz, Dora Lupkovics, Aida Mohamed

:AUT Olivia Wohlgemuth, Freya Cenker

:ROU Malina Calugareanu, Emilia Corbu

:GBR Carolina Stutchbury

:UKR Alina Poloziuk

:ESP Maria Teresa Diaz

The main favorite is Pasztor, but she'll need to beat Budenko, and, in the second round, Volpi. On the other hand, there is a really good draw for Carolina Stutchbury, who will face Guo Jessica Zia in second and Ariana Errigo in third, which can make her steal the quota from Pasztor. Malina Calugareanu will face Eleanor Harvey, which is obviously a bad draw for her. Other contenders need a final/medal and losses from rivals

Interesting fact: if USA and Italy will be in a same half or quarter, Ukraine 'll get the spot. So it means that there is a scenario in which we can receive quota before competition even starts

Fantastic World Cup for Kharlan - she finally won her first gold at this level since 2019.

So proud of her and this victory shut the mouths of some users who talked nasty about the decision to give her a quota from the IOC now fencer from this user's country is in total danger of failing to qualify for the Olympics. So it's revenge :raspberry:

no, because it's Tomorrow + 3 more...and since they already have 2, it makes 6

But the last WC will be after the deadline so it will be included only in seeding ranking for OG

Therefore, we'll have Novi Sad tomorrow, Paris in January and Cairo in February + Plovdiv and Tbilisi

@MHSN

FIE have fixed that :pope:

men's Sabre now actually has 3 more Team competitions in the OQP: :GEO Tbilisi (11/02/2024), :ITA Padua (3/3/2024) and :HUN Budapest (24/3/2024)

on the other hand, it's still uclear why also the women's Team Foil has 3 more events in early 2024, when Tomorrow the 3rd OQT is already scheduled (most likely, the tournament in :POL on April 21st, 2024 won't count towards the Olympic Qualification, but nobody has said/written anything about it) :mumble:

Expand

But it's correct, WF had 2 tournaments in the previous season (Plovdiv and Tbilisi) with 3 to go it feels right to have overall 5 tournaments

Doesn't matter, rules are rules, no matter how stupid they nay be. If Kharlan beats Ilieva, then be it.

The IOC already set the rules, that Russians will be allowed under neutral flag, so FIE were following that. If they were stupid enough not to anticipate such things, then it's on their hand, but don't bend the rules afterwards to save face..

I don't like when people get preferable treatment, doesn't matter if your name is Kharlan, Richardson, Chalmers, Zhang, or some guy from Cambodia.. Everyone follows the rules, until someone gets a bye.

Plus it was not like this was Kharlan's one and only chance. What about the team event, where Ukraine is in a top position? What about the individual tournament, isn't Kharlan a multiple time World Champion? There are still 4 World Cup events for the rankings as well, though i'm not sure what's the value there.

This is 100% a PR stint from Bach, since the DQ hit the newsfeed worldwide. I doubt if this was someone from Albania or Singapore he would be giving out WC's.

Expand

This isn't Kharlan's only chance and this quota may not even be used, but Kharlan is potentially suspended for 60 days for what? For not shaking hands with a Russian woman? None of the Ukrainians will do this, especially considering that Smirnova's brother is connected to the Russian army.

The disqualification was issued by the organizing committee, which is wrong and impossible, because a black card can only be given by the judge (doping is not taken into account) and no one else. The judge did not issue a black card to Olga, that is, he considered these actions to be normal.

It is absolutely obvious that Kharlan turned the Ukrainian-Russian situation in sports by this action, the fact that Russians are under a neutral flag does not make them non-Russian. There were agreements with the federation, they were not fulfilled, the next time everyone will think three hundred times about whether it is necessary to disqualify for such a stupidity as a handshake or if it is possible to do with other methods for saluting and ending the fight.

Babe, I don't want to disappoint you, but there would be a good chance that Kharlan would beat Ilieva in the second round and you would forget about the European quota forever, so this decision plays into the hands of Yoanna as well :raspberry:

    • It was the last event of the meet anyway, so they were never likely to do a swim off. If they wanted to decide in advance based on a race, more likely on a meet like Mare Nostrum.   Both are pre-selected anyway because of the relay, so they both will be there anyway. Whichever gets the nod, we probably won't know until the week of.   With GB's history of messing about, especially in the first year of a new Olympic cycle, who knows what we'll do. Knowing us, stick Tom Dean in there, make Duncan do the 200 fly and Jimmy the 400 free.
    • Will they do a swim-off?   The other option is they select both of them and then the head coach decides who swims at the meet.
    • Very glad they went with foursome/four-ball rather than just adding up individual scores.
    • I'll give it a shot.   On the mens side the freestyle results were pretty standard with the usual suspects of Ben Proud, Matt Richards and Duncan Scott swimming well. I don't think any of these guys were fully tapered and Proud didn't even shave for his 50m free win (21.67). 17 year old Jacob Mills came second in both the 50 and 100m free, so is on the team for Singapore. Tom Dean has only just got back into training but qualified in the 4x100 after being preselected in the 4x200 free.  James Guy looked impressive with a PB in the 200m free at 1:45.08. He also won the 400m free in a race where he went out way too fast and died at the end (3:46.64). The longer distances weren't notable.   Ollie Morgan was certainly stand out swimmer on the mens side sweeping the backstrokes for a 3rd straight year. He broke the national record in the 100m with a 52.12 with a pretty poor finish. He also impressed in the 200m with a 1:55.55   Without Peaty, the mens breaststroke was pretty poor, with Greg Butler only qualifying for the relay. 17 year olds Max Morgan and Filip Nowacki took home a few medals between them.   The Men's fly was also pretty pedestrian by international standards. Proud won the 50m in 23.21 with a long glide, whilst Ed Mildred took the relay spot in 51.80. 17 y.o Jack Brown was only 0.07 back Duncan Scott won the 200m (1:54.89) but he wont swim it in Singapore.   Scott took the mens 200m IM in 1:56.44, whilst, Max Litchfield won the 400m in 4:11.59     On the women's side the quality wasn't as good but there were a few standout performances.   Freya Colbert got close to the British record in the 200m free in 1:55.76, and Eva Okaro impressed with a 24.48 50m free.    The backstrokes were disappointing with nobody breaking a minute in the 100 (1:00.03), but Katie Shanahan looked good in the 200 at (2:07.91)   Angharad Evans was rapid in the breaststrokes breaking the national record in the 100 (1:05.37), and a huge PB in the 200 (2:21.86)   Fly was poor with nobody breaking 58 in the 100 (58.03), but Macinnes broke the Scottish record in the 200 (2:07.14)   Abbie Wood swept the Medleys with a 2:08.85 200 and a 4:36.66 400     Overall the results were alright with a few strong standout performances. As is the case in a post olympic year, the big guns took it fairly easy whilst some juniors looked really promising.    More results here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Aquatics_GB_Swimming_Championships
