  1. Canada clinches first Toews guides solid 4-1 win over Team Europe Jonathan Toews celebrates his first-period goal for Canada. Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews showed quick hands around the net, scoring early and late in the first period to lead Canada to a 4-1 win over Team Europe. Toews later added another goal and an assist to make a three-point night. Jaroslav Halak was sensational in goal for Europe, stopping 42 shots. Corey Crawford at the other end faced only 20 shots. The win gives Canada a 3-0 record and first place in Group A. It will now play either North America or Russia on Saturday night. The opponent will be decided tomorrow afternoon when Finland and Russia square off. A Russian win will mean another chapter in the storied rivalry between the maple leaf and CCCP. A Finnish win will make for a truly unique semis between Canada and North America. "We were a little casual with the puck," coach Mike Babcock suggested. "Their goalie was good. We're ready for the elimination round now. The best of the best delivers when it matters." Team Europe, with two wins and a loss, has a date booked with Sweden in the other semi-finals on Sunday afternoon. "I still think we can improve," Crosby said. "Mostly consistency. We have to be sharp, clean a few things up, but mostly it's consistency." "We had a tough time keeping Hossa's line with Kopitar at bay. At the end of the day, we got the win," Toews noted. Crosby made it 1-0 at 4:01 when he corralled a Jay Bouwmeester shot behind the net and wrapped it around the back side before Halak could cover the post. Halak made three incredible saves later in the period, robbing Steven Stamkos with a glove and twice denying Brad Marchand in quick succession. Moments later, though, Halak cleared the puck around the boards unwisely, and before he could get settled in his crease Matt Duchene spotted Toews, who deflected the puck in with only 54.4 seconds left in the period. Europe, though, came out with purpose in the second and was rewarded thanks to a clever shot by Marian Hossa from a terrible angle. Skating down the left side and seeing no options, he fired the puck at goalie Corey Crawford from the icing line. It bounced off the goalie’s pads and in at 4:38. Canada restored its two-goal lead after Europe defenceman Roman Josi broke his stick taking a shot at the Canada blue line. Toews collected the puck and skated down on a three-on-one, but his teammates were unnecessary. He wired a wrist shot over Halak’s glove at 14:48. Logan Couture closed out the scoring with a goal at 17:33, firing a loose puck over the glove of Halak.

  3. Ah ok fair tough..but Canada is clearly above. This Canadian team is just amazing and if we consider the players in the north america team, Canadian depth and quality is impressive.Watching playing is a pleasure. About this match, the start of the second period was great by team Europe, they played very well untill this a bit controversial call for Sekera, I understand the high stick rule..no problem with that but still this call was very awful for me...and this call helped Canada to return back to their play and since this moment europeans chances are again over

  8. Team North America - Sweden 4-3 (OT) HIGHLIGHTS
  9. MacKinnon wins it in OT Thriller ends with magical deke with 48.8 seconds left Vince Trocheck celebrates his goal for Team North America in the first period against Sweden. Nathan MacKinnon put the moves on Henrik Lundqvist in overtime, giving North America a 4-3 win over Sweden in World Cup play. It was an overtime with breakaways and great saves, culminating with a win by the speedy youngsters who have captured the hearts of fans in Toronto. "It was a lot of fun to be a part of," enthused Mark Schiefele. Incredibly, the result is a mixed message for the young guns. Sweden, with the one point for an OT loss, will finish first in the group with five points and qualify for the semi-finals. "Of course, you always want to win the game, but for us, it's mission accomplished," said Swedish coach Rikard Gronborg. "We finished first in our group and we move on, so we're happy." North America, meanwhile, has four points after the win, but the team is in a tenuous position. Russia has two points with a game against Finland tomorrow. If the Russians win and finish tied with North America, Russia would advance because of the head-to-head result. The first period was perhaps the most entertaining so far at this year’s tournament. Not only did it produce five goals, it featured no fewer than five breakaways by the speedy North Americans, two by Connor McDavid who couldn’t buy a goal for his bad fortune. In fact, the first minute alone was sensational. McDavid made a brilliant rush but was stopped by Henrik Lundqvist. The puck came to Morgan Rielly at the point, and his shot created a rebound for Auston Matthews to bang home just 30 seconds after the opening faceoff. Next shift, Johnny Gaudreau had a breakaway but was hooked by Erik Karlsson from behind, resulting in a penalty shot. Gaudreau, however, made a mess of the chance and fired high and wide from a long way out. No matter. Next shift saw Shayne Gostisbehere find Vince Trocheck in front with a great slap pass. Trocheck controlled the puck and patiently backhanded it past a sprawling Lundqvist for a 2-0 lead. The experienced Swedes were not so easily conquered, though. They got one goal back at 8:24 when Filip Forsberg’s shot snuck in under the arm of John Gibson. Five minutes later, Gaudreau scored a beauty, again on a breakaway. This time he deked Lundqvist out of his equipment, making it 3-1 at 13:57. But again the Swedes clawed their way back. Gibson made an angled save on a Forsberg shot, but the puck came out the other side where Niklas Backstrom knifed it into the empty side of the goal. The North Americans were sailing nicely along, but in a flash it was a tie game. Early in the third a hard Karlsson pass found Patrik Berglund's stick in front, and he made a great deflection past Gisbon at 6:50.

  16. Canada sends Americans packing Puck pressure, speed, chemistry too much in 4-2 game Matt Duchene (middle) celebrates one of his two goals in a big win against the United States. Team USA will not be playing in the World Cup beyond its final round-robin game on Thursday night against the Czech Republic. Tonight’s decisive 4-2 loss to Canada ensured as much. The Americans have now lost both their games and sit in last place of Group A with no points. "We had a good start," offered U.S. coach John Tortorella, "but we gave them a couple of freebies. We can't do that. They surged after that, and we had no answer. It's disappointing, frustrating. We have not played well offensively. We have skilled players, but as a group we had just one goal in two games." Matt Duchene had two goals for the winners. "It felt good," he said. "There's lots to improve on, but it was a solid win. To play on this stage, against the U.S., and score a couple of goals felt pretty awesome. We had a chance to put them out of the tourney, and we did." Canada’s win was the result of tenacious puck pursuit, superior skill with the puck, and a skating lineup top to bottom among the 12 forwards. The Canadians can clinch top spot in the group with a win against Team Europe tomorrow night. A desperate Team USA got just the start it needed, opening the scoring at 4:27 on a fortuitous play. Although they lost the puck off the rush, Canadian defenceman Marc-Edouard Vlasic cleared the puck into the chest of Ryan McDonagh. McDonagh managed to control the puck and fire a quick shot past Carey Price to give the Americans some much needed momentum. Canada, however, deep in talent and experience, came right back and then some. Just a minute and a half later, Vlasic’s point shot came out the other side of the goal and Duchene popped the puck in before Jonathan Quick could do anything about it. Fourteen seconds after that Logan Couture lifted a backhand pass across the crease that went off Quick’s stick, hit Corey Perry, and bounced into the net. The U.S. challenged the goal, but video review confirmed it was a good—albeit ugly—hockey goal. Then, to complete the onslaught in the opening period, Erik Johnson made a bad giveaway deep in his end. Duchene moved in alone on goal and made a sensational deke, tucking the puck between the pads of Quick with calm and poise, making it 3-1 at 12:07. "Getting the lead and then adding to it just gave us more energy," Patrice Bergeron said. "That's all you can ask for." Although the Americans started the second with good forechecking and pressure, Canada kept them to the outside and allowed few good scoring chances. And when the time came, Canada got a good bounce and capitalized on its chances, notably at 8:50. John Tavares flew down the left wing, made a sensational deke, and passed the puck to Bergeron in front. He was checked by McDonagh, but in the process the puck bounced off both players’ skates and in. Canada now led, 4-1. Although Canada skated well in the third, there were some worrisome moments in goal as Price was beaten three times without suffering the consequences. Derek Stepan, Dustin Byfuglien, and Max Pacioretty all hit the post with hard shots, but the puck stayed out each time. The Americans did inch closer at 17:28 when T.J. Oshie pushed a loose puck over the line from the crease, but that was as close as his team got. "We did a lot of the little things well tonight, but we have to keep getting better," added Joe Thornton. "It's a short tournament. Every line expects to do big things when they're out there, so it's no shock when we do."
