Austria finds magic formula

5-0 win vs. Korea creates exciting final day

 

The Koreans were on the way to promotion after starting with three wins but Austria took them down to earth with a 5-0 win and took the lead in the standings.

 

Austria now leads with 9 points, as many as Korea has. Both teams have it in their own hand to reach a top-2 placing and promotion tomorrow in their games against Poland and Ukraine respectively. Kazakhstan with 8 points and Poland with 7 remain in the race as well.

 

Austria showed an impressive and efficient performance in the first period to open a three-goal gap and bring the Koreans in a situation they haven’t experienced before at this tournament. The three goals were scored in the second half of the first period within just over four minutes of time.

 

While the Koreans tried to clear the puck in their zone, Lukas Haudum intercepted a pass and beat goalie Matt Dalton with a shot from the left face-off circle to open the scoring at 12:09.

 

Just 47 seconds later Brian Lebler scored after a horizontal pass from Manuel Ganahl that the Koreans tried to intercept without success.

 

And three-and-a-half minutes later the Austrians scored in a similar situation. Dominique Heinrich concluded a 2-on-1 after a side pass from Lebler with the 3-0 goal.

 

The period ended with 11-11 shots on goal with the difference that the Austrians found a way to overcome the Korean defence and keep up with the Koreans’ speed. With the staff around head coach Roger Bader heavily analysing the opposing players both here in Kyiv and during the rest of the season, the Austrians seemed to have done their video job well and seemed to have found the magic formula.

 

In the second period it didn’t take long until the Austrians scored a fourth time. Konstantin Komarek shovelled the puck in after a Dominique Heinrich shot had hit the goalie and was from there sliding toward the goal line. That also ended the game for Dalton. A massive factor in the success during the previous three games, the Canadian-turned-Korean wasn’t able to keep his team in the game today and was replaced with Sungje Park.

 

Park, who played his first game in an IIHF event in two years, kept his net clean until the Austrians scored with 4-on-4 players on the ice at 9:09 of the third period. Markus Schlacher skated on the right side and sent a pass to the crease that was stopped by a Korean skate. Steven Strong reacted the fastest and made it 5-0.

*4 Nations are fighting for the 2 qualifying spots. Austria and South Korea both with 9 points (Austria with favorable H2H) Kazakhstan with 8 points and Poland with 7 points.

Here the Qualifying possibilities:

**Austria will qualify for Top Division if - they win against Poland. even a OT/GWS defeat against Poland might be enough if S. Korea lose to Ukraine or Kazakhstan to Hungary (or both).

***South Korea will qualify for Top Division if - they win against Ukraine. Even a defeat in regular time can be enough if Kazakhstan lose to Hungary in RT and Poland win only after OT/GWS against Austria.

****Kazakhstan will qualify to Top Division if - they win against Hungary but at least one of S. Korea/Austria doesn´t win it´s match, also a OT/GWS win can be enough if Poland beat Austria in Regular Time.

*****Poland will qualify to Top Division if  - they win against Austria in Regular Time and at least one of S. Korea or Kazakhstan lost their games.

******In the bottom side everything is clear. Ukraine is already relegated to Diision I Group B next year no matter their tomorrows result with South Korea, they can´t overpass Hungary anymore in the table.

Ready for the super Friday ? Altogether with the TAISC opening ceremony tonight we have today a brutal fight for Top Division promotions during todays last day of the Division IA World Championships in Kyiv.

I already posted yesterday some (my brief calculations) possibilities for the different 4 still fighting teams, but here from IIHF a official article with all possibilities and there 64 different scenarios possible to happen today :

On the last day in Kyiv it’s still open who will be promoted. Four teams battle for two spots in the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Denmark today.

 

The standings after four games for each team look as follows:

• 1. Austria 9
• 2. Korea 9
• 3. Kazakhstan 8
• 4. Poland 7
• 5. Hungary 3
• 6. Ukraine 0

 

The places for the last two teams are already carved in stone. Hungary will finish in fifth place, host Ukraine will end up in last place and be relegated.

That leaves four teams who can still finish anywhere between first and fourth place on Super Friday in Kyiv.

 

 

Three games are left to be played today:

• Hungary vs. Kazakhstan 13:30 (12:30 CET, 16:30 KAZ time)
• Poland vs. Austria 17:00 (16:00 CET)
• Korea vs. Ukraine 20:30 (2:30am in Korea)

 

That gives 64 possible !!!!!! scenarios the standings could end up and Korea as a favourite thanks to wins in the head-to-head games against two of the three top-4 opponents. Here’s what the teams need to do in order to end up in the top-two and play in the top division next year.

 

Korea, mathematical probability: 80%

A win against Ukraine – no matter whether in regulation time or after – enables Korea to get promoted.

A point from a loss in overtime or shootout against Ukraine can be enough if Kazakhstan doesn’t beat Hungary in regulation time. Or if Kazakhstan beats Hungary in regulation time but Austria loses to Poland in regulation time.

A loss in regulation time to Ukraine will likely cost promotion. Except if Kazakhstan loses to Hungary and Poland doesn’t beat Austria in regulation time.

 

Austria, mathematical probability: 70%

Austria will make it with a regulation-time win against Poland.

An overtime or shootout win except works too in the following scenarios: Kazakhstan doesn’t beat Hungary in regulation time. Or: Kazakhstan wins in regulation time but Korea doesn’t beat Ukraine in regulation time.

A point from an overtime or shootout loss to Poland can be enough except in the following scenario: Kazakhstan beats Hungary and Korea beats Ukraine.

A loss in regulation time to Poland will likely cost promotion. Except if Hungary beats Kazakhstan and Korea loses in regulation time to Ukraine.

 

Kazakhstan, mathematical probability: 34%

Kazakhstan needs to win and some help from the other teams.

If Kazakhstan wins in regulation time against Hungary it must hope that Poland beats Austria in the second game. Or if Austria wins in regulation time, Kazakhstan must hope that Korea loses to Ukraine. If Austria wins in overtime or shootout, Kazakhstan must hope that either Korea loses the game or wins it in regulation time, otherwise a three-team tie with Austria, Korea and Kazakhstan would occur with Austria and Korea as promoted teams.

Also an overtime or shootout win against Hungary can be enough in some cases: If Poland beats Austria in regulation time. If Poland beats Austria in overtime/shootout but Korea doesn’t lose to Ukraine in overtime/shootout otherwise a three-team tie with Austria, Korea and Kazakhstan would occur with Austria and Korea as promoted teams. If Austria beats Poland but Korea loses to Ukraine in regulation time.

If Kazakhstan loses to Hungary, it will end up in third or fourth place.

 

Poland, mathematical probability: 16%

Only a regulation-time win against Austria and help from the other teams can enable Poland to move from first to second or even first place.

This is what has to happen apart from a regulation-time win in its own game: Hungary needs to beat Kazakhstan. If Kazakhstan beats Hungary, Poland will need Korea to lose in regulation time against Ukraine.

If Poland doesn’t beat Austria in regulation time, it will end up in third or fourth place.

Kazakhstan wins and hopes

Early goals lead to victory vs. Hungary

 

Kazakhstan edged Hungary 3-1 and can earn promotion if it won’t be overtaken later today.

 

Even though Kazakhstan was favoured and was playing for promotion while Hungary was left battling for honour, the game was anything but one-sided. Kazakhstan got up 2-0 early and managed to defend the lead.

 

Kazakhstan now must hope that Poland beats Austria in the second game. Or if Austria wins in regulation time, Kazakhstan must hope that Korea loses to Ukraine. Or if Austria wins in overtime or shootout, Kazakhstan must hope that either Korea loses the game or wins it in regulation time, otherwise a three-team tie with Austria, Korea and Kazakhstan would occur with Austria and Korea as promoted teams.

 

The Kazakhs laid the foundation for the win with goals early in the game while they were outshot by Hungary 32-27 throughout the game.

At 2:48 Kevin Dallman gave the team the lead with his precise slap shot from the blue line.

 

Eight minutes later Nikita Mikhailis was left unnoticed near the offensive blue line when he got a pass from Anton Sagadeyev to extend the lead.

 

It was a bad start for the Hungarians, who played for the honour despite not being able to move from their fifth place. But the Hungarians didn’t give up and competed well.

 

Eventually they were rewarded late in the first period. On a 4-on-3 power play Kalvin Sagert brought Hungary back in the game when he hammered in a shot from behind the right face-off circle.

 

After that the goalies Miklos Rajna and Vitali Kolesnik kept their net clean for the rest of the game.

 

With 2:25 left and a penalty call against Kazakh defenceman Kirill Polokhov, Hungary took the time-out for the last chances to tie the game but it didn’t work out. With 13 seconds remaining in regulation time Nigel Dawes scored the 3-1 goal into the empty net.
