I have to watch the start on ARD since Eurosport are showing snooker, again.. I like snooker, but don't know when it became this "money" sport for them, that they air it over ski-jumping. This happened only for the Masters in prior years, definitely not for lower tournaments.
Conditions are awful and Willingen, but it makes for a very interesting results.
First ever women's event in Garmisch and we have 7 different countries in the top 7. The second round was very good with lots of nice jumps and frequent lead changes.
Kraft's streak ends, as Geiger jumps from the mist for the win. Really good start for Germany as old faces Geiger, Wellinger and Paschke are showing form from 5 years ago.
A new season and "good" to see the old ski-jumping traditions still being present. As in continue to enforce dubious rules and DQ the little people, while the power nations jump with bed sheets and get high fives from the "officials"
Well, the line-up was more of a Continental Cup, but it was good to see him have consistent jumps. If he somehow manages top 10s in the winter, that would be the real success.
By God Watson, Canada can fly! First ever medal at WC, men or women. Imagine, that random Olympic medal being the turning point for these and upcoming successes.
With todays start, Granerud missed the chance to equal the all time consecutive World Cup podiums record. Janne Ahonen will keep the record at 13 for now.
The return of ski-jumping at the World Cup stage in the USofA after 19 years and to Lake Placid specifically since 1990 Now only, if we can get this Q started.
A bit of interesting news about the Silvester Tour for women. Apparently the Germans have usurped it as their president of the ski federation has announced on their news channel that it's all but been confirmed that the women will jump during the new years in both Ga-Pa and Obersdorf. They want the Austrian part of the 4-Hills for men to come in and join them in hosting the other two legs. Meaning Ljubno (and also Villach) who's been hosting these events since the beginning will fall out. This stings as Ljubno despite being the smallest hill has the best attendance for women's ski jumping. Fox example over 7000 people were in the stands today. In some other venues you can't even get more than 200. I guess FIS really does care only about the money...
I would lie, if i say, i'm surprised about this. No one cared about women's ski-jumping around New Years, before Ljubno showed these past 2 years, that there is some interest there. They had by far the most fans for a women's event. But of course, why make their own, unique W 4 Hills and build a tradition, when you can just copy-paste from the men and have it as a "preliminary boxing card" before the Main event.
Due to the World Cup in Qatar the new season will start on November 6th in Wisla and for the first time ever the competition will be held on plastic run-offs which is standard for the summer events. The season will close on April 2nd which makes it the longest ski jumping season ever. Pretty expendable in a sport where only 10 nations compete on a reasonable basis and some of them are semi-professional to say the very least.
World Cup starts on the 21st, why it has to be so early in Wisla and not November 12-13th, heck even the normal 19-20th? It is still before the WC starts
Longest season only in timeframe, but as usual in number of rounds. This time we are getting only 4 stops, instead of 5, in the pre-4 Hills period. Iron Mountain and Rasnov are the odd ones and by the look of their place in the calendar they will be the break ones for the top competitors before the Worlds.
The bigger question though is, where have the Team events gone?! I see only 3 regular ones + 1 mixed one (with one Rasnov TBC). Last year we had 5 and 3-4 years ago we had 7-8 team competitions a year..
I'm always amazed that Simon Ammann's first Olympics were Nagano 98. We've reached that time, when it's exceptionally rare to find active athletes, who have competed in the 90s.
