Birmingham has been chosen over Liverpool to be England's candidate for hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Birmingham now needs to prove to the treasury that bringing the games to the West Midlands will be value for money as 75% of the costs will come from the taxpayer.

Found one even better, in Heat 5 of the women's 400m heats Muzak Al Malki of Oman has a PB of 57:23:11! I'm hoping there's an error there or the timekeeping that of that athletics may be thrown out!

China is boycotting the event?

Expand

They're not sending any teams and the individual athletes are very low quality.

History must have been made earlier when the Chinese weightlifter was in the B group!! That tells you all you need to know about how seriously the Chinese are taking this event!

North Korea's weightlifting team here is insane! They can easily win all the women's events plus 3 of the men's and break a tonne of universiade records along the way. Their 19 year old competitor in the women's -48 has an opening weight equal to the Olympic gold medal at Rio :hyper:

I think each country is only allowed to qualify 1 boat per gender, FISA-Rowing.pdf

So that changes the quota a little bit:

Men's Pair: :CRO:GER:GBR:MEX:NZL:ROU:TUR:UZB

I had the same issue on the World Games thread. I asked Sindo about it and he said he could try and increase it but it hasn't worked so far!

Only 4 (maybe 5, North Korea's pairs is ranked third) countries should win medals at the AWG.

I'd mostly agree, China, South Korea, Japan and Kazakhstan are all sending most of their top athletes ans will sweep the medals. An outside chance perhaps for Uzbekistan in the Men's Figure Skating and even though the medals don't count Australia may get a podium position!

Looks like there will be at least 26 nations with medals as Norway won bronze in Curling and GB and Canada will win at least a silver tomorrow in the curling finals! That's up 2 on last time, but not as high as the 32 in 2013!!

The winter Universiade medal table really confuses me! Every year Russia races ahead in the medals table on the first few days, but then only seems able to add one or two gold medals every day after that :mumble:

Russia must have some amazing preparations because they're dominance would disappear if the medal count stated from day 3!

20 nations in mens ice hockey. awesome :d

But only 4 nations are allowed to compete for the medals (:kaz:CHN:JPN:KOR)! They should've allowed a few more nations into the medal winning group to give others like Hong Kong a bit of a chance!
