Exactly what advantage does Switzerland have in their equipment? Would you mind explaining a little, please?

Expand

They have their own technology centers where they work on this. Commentators on Italian TV talk about it very often during broadcasts. Ok, they have a lot of money but FIS has to think whether anyone outside Switzerland will be interested in the fact that 4-5 Swiss players are constantly in first place, especially in the long term perspective. The same thing happened with Austria once and it wasn't good either for all od this discipline.

Switzerland dominates similarly to Austria in the late 90s. It's a pity that instead of focusing on some fluore, FIS can't go towards reducing the dominance of these giants. Without such an advantage in equipment, Switzerland wouldn't be so strong and this, I think can be limited.

It is just worth remembering that Colturi and Ljutić, for example, no longer compete in these junior competitions. The worst thing that can happen to Collomb now is that the Italian media will forcefully make her out to be succesor of Brignone and put pressure on her. As of today, she doesn`t seem a talent on the level of Fede or Colturi and such confusion can only harm this young girl.

The only interesting story today was Shiffrin dissing Vonn and later won with Johnson, while Vonn finished well behind, mostly due to her downhill.

This doesn`t surprise me, because these are completely different generations of skiers and Schiffrin preferred to start with her friend, who is currently better sports level than Vonn. She might have chosen Vonn only because of pressure from sponsors and the media.

It's just that in winter Italy doesn't have any flagship sport (like Germany in luge, Austria and Sui in alpine skiing) and recently we've had practically no positive surprises for outsiders, like in summer events. We have the multitude of 4-5 places and still watching the backs of the powers in different sports, whether in luge or alpine skiing etc. In alpine skiing we have strong girls but if that translates into 1-2 medals at the World Championships, then we have nothing to talk about. Especially since Brignone and Goggia are over 30. Next year's winter games will be an epochal defeat for us, because it will be difficult to even win 10 medals. Only speed skating and short track can save us.

Some results in the last few days in several competitions:

- Paris: 4 in men`s downhill (0,15 to podium),

- Goggia: 5 in women`s Super G (0,06 to podium),

- Paris: 7 in men`s Super G (0,16 to podium),

- Fischnaller: 4 in men`s single luge,

- Voetter/Oberhofer: 4 in women`s double.

Only Brignone in women`s Super G have a medal but only silver behind 0,10 sec. Venier from Austria.

It's really hard to watch you constantly lose to Germans, Austrians or Swiss in various disciplines and you're helpless in it and no other positive surprise compensates you for it. I'm slowly getting fed up.

what?

you can normally ski on tougher courses in the Europa/Nor-Am Cup

it's the 3rd time in a row that a major DH (and Super-G) medal course is absolutely unworthy (2022 OG, 2023 and Today's WCh)

luckily, in Beijing it was Suter ahead of Goggia saving the dignity of the final standing, but the last 2 world champs, man! gold to people with 0 world cup wins (and a loughable number of podiums)...it might be the beauty of the sport, but it's also something that shouldn't happen this often

the Italians are simply not good enough at this kind of game, they're used to train and race on different kind of tracks (and snow) and it was clear since the first training run that they didn't stand a chance on this course (I don't know how Brignone could end up with silver in Super-G, especially that kind of "Super-G for beginners")

Expand

Goggia before her last injuries in period: 2022/2024, would have fought for gold even on this course. Unfortunately, another accidents have taken their health and she is no longer the same skier she was before. Throughout the current season, Goggia has been at a lower level in the downhill than Brignone, which was once unthinkable. Apart from Goggia, Brignone couldn't do anything yesterday and Delago and Pirovano aren`t currently at medal level.

They should have already run the final and only then released these songs. I didn't expect that Austria - the homeland of alpine skiing - would pull such a embarrassment. I think that they decided that this is a non-Olympic competition and could be treated more loosely.

Yeah, she is not fully prepared to compete for the medals. Just showing up to finish somewhere in the middle of the result list is nothing for her. She is already aiming the Olympics.

The problem it`s that she losing places on starting list.

Brignone may lose the general classification to Gut by not finishing a lot of giants slalom: 3 DNFs out of 5. Today she could have taken less risks and finished 2nd in front of Gut but she lost 80 points to her.

Bassino hasn`t only had problems with her health this season but also with her bad form.

Thats something.

Great race for Vonn.

Until recently, Austria was the hegemon in this sport, and for several years it has been Switzerland. There must be huge money going there for several years, looking at their results. They have stars in every discipline, wide squads, young successors. When I compare it with Italy, there is no comparison. After Brignone and Goggia left, we have almost no one, and Switzerland pulls out some super talented 21/22 year old every 2-3 years.

Finally all the hard work for Albert pays off and he has his first WC victory at age 27

And he won in one of the most legendary slaloms in Madonna.

Also maybe a symbolic moment, because until now, the only WC victory for Bulgaria was Petar Popangelov's 1980 slalom win on .... January 8th.

And we are January 8th , 45 years later.

The Colturi case affair is becoming increasingly loud in the Italian media. Yesterday commentators on the Italian public channel Rai began to openly say that they hope Lara will return to Italy and also criticize the terrible form of the Italian team in the women's slalom. I`m very happy about this, because the louder this affair is, the greater the pressure will be on the Italian federation to come to an agreement with the Colturi team (pressure from CONI, the ministry and maybe even higher).

    • 1980. Allan Wells. It wasn’t on television because of the Olympic boycott so I found out about it from the newspapers.
    • Also GB didn’t reach its target in the 4x100 women relay or the medley so those places might be rejected.
    • It was the last event of the meet anyway, so they were never likely to do a swim off. If they wanted to decide in advance based on a race, more likely on a meet like Mare Nostrum.   Both are pre-selected anyway because of the relay, so they both will be there anyway. Whichever gets the nod, we probably won't know until the week of.   With GB's history of messing about, especially in the first year of a new Olympic cycle, who knows what we'll do. Knowing us, stick Tom Dean in there, make Duncan do the 200 fly and Jimmy the 400 free.
    • Will they do a swim-off?   The other option is they select both of them and then the head coach decides who swims at the meet.
    • Very glad they went with foursome/four-ball rather than just adding up individual scores.
    • I'll give it a shot.   On the mens side the freestyle results were pretty standard with the usual suspects of Ben Proud, Matt Richards and Duncan Scott swimming well. I don't think any of these guys were fully tapered and Proud didn't even shave for his 50m free win (21.67). 17 year old Jacob Mills came second in both the 50 and 100m free, so is on the team for Singapore. Tom Dean has only just got back into training but qualified in the 4x100 after being preselected in the 4x200 free.  James Guy looked impressive with a PB in the 200m free at 1:45.08. He also won the 400m free in a race where he went out way too fast and died at the end (3:46.64). The longer distances weren't notable.   Ollie Morgan was certainly stand out swimmer on the mens side sweeping the backstrokes for a 3rd straight year. He broke the national record in the 100m with a 52.12 with a pretty poor finish. He also impressed in the 200m with a 1:55.55   Without Peaty, the mens breaststroke was pretty poor, with Greg Butler only qualifying for the relay. 17 year olds Max Morgan and Filip Nowacki took home a few medals between them.   The Men's fly was also pretty pedestrian by international standards. Proud won the 50m in 23.21 with a long glide, whilst Ed Mildred took the relay spot in 51.80. 17 y.o Jack Brown was only 0.07 back Duncan Scott won the 200m (1:54.89) but he wont swim it in Singapore.   Scott took the mens 200m IM in 1:56.44, whilst, Max Litchfield won the 400m in 4:11.59     On the women's side the quality wasn't as good but there were a few standout performances.   Freya Colbert got close to the British record in the 200m free in 1:55.76, and Eva Okaro impressed with a 24.48 50m free.    The backstrokes were disappointing with nobody breaking a minute in the 100 (1:00.03), but Katie Shanahan looked good in the 200 at (2:07.91)   Angharad Evans was rapid in the breaststrokes breaking the national record in the 100 (1:05.37), and a huge PB in the 200 (2:21.86)   Fly was poor with nobody breaking 58 in the 100 (58.03), but Macinnes broke the Scottish record in the 200 (2:07.14)   Abbie Wood swept the Medleys with a 2:08.85 200 and a 4:36.66 400     Overall the results were alright with a few strong standout performances. As is the case in a post olympic year, the big guns took it fairly easy whilst some juniors looked really promising.    More results here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Aquatics_GB_Swimming_Championships
