ExpandI expected replay from 1956 and it was close. We had no official exptectations. Ministry of Sport is in the hands of new goverment, POC in hands of the old one. Political pat. Financial chaos. Only POC chief expected 15 medals but it was all part of his possible presidencial campaign from old goverment side to replace Duda. It was his kind of...private count. Predicting near 9 i was seen as pesimist...no idea on what basis. My max was 12..it was possible. Oh golds...2 but knowing how climbing is risky it was 1-2. It went the other way round Iga-Miroslaw. Dream of gold in volleyball...not this time. Terrible games as i predicted馃槈. We didn't know if Borowska competes, in what shape. Going backwards from 350m mark in sprint canoe...well...this was above even my imagination 馃槈.
In Italy Giovanni Malago- the head of CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) will reach an agreement with any government: the centre-left, the technical government and now the right-wing coalition led by Prime Minister Meloni
According to bookmakers and most predictions we could win about 45 medals, including 12 gold. The number of gold medals was perfectly predicted. In terms of the total medals, we tied with Tokyo - 40 medals but we fell a little short of 45. 20x 4th place played a significant role. We reached the number of 40 medals thanks to a great finish - 10 medals in the last 3 days. However, I wrote earlier that I would prefer gold in women's volleyball than even 4-5 bronze medals more in some individual competition and that's exactly what happened - this is our first gold in a team sport since 2004 and the first in history in volleyball. That's why I consider these games a moderate success, although of course it can always be better.
Edited by copravolleyExpandThey should completely destroy their economy, like southern European countries, and then beg other European nations for billions of euros, so that they can invest in sports and keep the population sedated.
Instead of looking to the south of Europe, maybe they should follow the example of Norway and Sweden?
ExpandBy the way if it stays 40-40 with golds (which is probably the case) what would have made the difference?
Maybe for
China: Imane Khalif box final (could they somehow challenge that?)
US: err, that high jump
Objectively, the USA is better because they won many more medals, so in my opinion it's good that they take 1st place here, just as I think we are at a higher level than Korea, even though we won 1 gold less.
ExpandVery sad for Finland especially...
All the more so because in winter sports they are also much weaker than they used to be. Maybe instead of choosing cool prime ministers - like this attractive woman - they should choose competent people who will revive competitive sports in Finland?
Edited by copravolleyThese are objective calculations that we have the most 4th and 5th places (5th place in judo is the first place behind the podium). On paper we should win about 45 medals here - that's what the bookmakers' predictions indicated before the games. But personally, I prefer gold in volleyball than 4-5 bronze in track cycling or archery.
ExpandItaly defeated Germany in the medal table for the first time since Rome 1960 (64 years ago!)
Objectively, we should be in 8th place, if not for Korea's sensational efficiency in gold medals, but that's nothing. If at least 1/4 of these 4th places were converted into medals, it would be our absolute record + add injuries, illnesses, bad luck, etc.
ExpandWinning almost dozen medals less than in London or Rio speaks contrairly.
But i agree, China doing their job with 100% success doesnt give many options to USA.
It's always easier for an authoritarian country in this regard. Look at the DDR: was about 16 million population but they managed to win a similar number of medals as the much larger USSR in some editions.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Germany
Edited by copravolleyExpandMaybe not an authoritarian country but USA uses this medal table in broader sense than just sportive one. I have no doubt about that. Olympic success was and will always be used in many other causes, politic ones too.
China is expanding in all sports, USA loses dominance in their traditional strongholds.
But i agree, China does know where are their best opportunities and uses that to the max.
Before the Beijing Olympics, the central government in China designated each province to train a different sport. In the USA, this is not possible. There, each state has its own independence, and training is based on universities. This cannot be centrally controlled but this is the only way to clearly beat China.
Edited by copravolleyExpandWe could limit the maximum number of athletes per nation (for example, 6 as in weightlifting).
Ok, but once upon a time divers from the USA, Canada, or Russia were able to beat the Chinese, but since the beginning of the 21st century they practically can't anymore beat him. What has changed since then?
Edited by copravolleyExpandI don't think the US system is fragile. It's more that the United States is facing increased competition in their traditional sports (Australia in swimming, Canada in athletics, etc.). Meanwhile, China continues to dominate in its preferred sports (diving, table tennis, etc.).
I wonder if anyone is able to compete equally in diving with China? Maybe they should try to change the rules to make the competition more equal? Competing only for 3rd place in individual starts is a bit boring, and there are a lot of such competitions there. Table tennis is not that big of a problem, because there are only 5 events, I think.
Edited by copravolleyExpandI am neutral here but USA needs to change something.
Only time, AFAIK, when China topped the medal table was in 2008.
In Rio USA had 40 + golds, China less than 30.
In Tokyo China was down by 1.
Now, USA will 99% lose this battle.
System in USA is obviously fragile in all sports.
The USA still wins the most medals but China is going more into specialization, e.g. in diving they have collected a dozen or so gold medals (a full set). The USA has recently entered fencing and wrestling more strongly but these are still not disciplines where they can be 100% sure of gold, like China in diving or table tennis. In general, the USA, as a country, has big problems now, also financial ones and this is also reflected in sports. It`s not an authoritarian country that tried to cover up its internal problems by winning a lot of medals at the games, e.g. the USSR, the DDR, etc.
I hope that tomorrow we will win the women's volleyball final against the USA and their 1st place in the medal table will be strong dangerous by this :P
ExpandYeah, many countries will have their best Games recently, but in hindsight not having Russia played a big factor. And even in Tokyo Russia weren't competing with their full potential.
I had mentioned it a few months back, that it was very likely, that the top 10 this year will all have 10+ gold medals, which I'm not sure if it has happened before.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Summer_Olympics_medal_table
ExpandCanada has won the exact same medal combination as in Tokyo (a later reallocation switched a Bronze to silver). Still a few chances for medals and hopefully we can win a few. The next medal would mean Canada's best ever non boycotted games performance.
Considering the amount of bad luck and stuff that didn't go our away, I consider this a miracle
It's the same with Italy. We took 20x 4th or 5th place here (judo, which means de facto 1st place on the podium). Today alone we took another 5x 4th place. You have to remember, however, that`s no ROC here. They won 71 medals in Tokyo, including 20 gold. Someone had to take those medals from them. Probably most of them the USA and China but other countries also.
Edited by copravolleyExpandDo you have a 3rd big gold chance? Asking as a concerned brit that we're gonna get swamped by europe in the next two days 馃く
I see you germany with your handball and beach volley finals, and you netherlands
Maybe Elena Micheli in Modern Pentathlon? She was a World Champion in 2022 and 2023 but I don`t know if she suffer too many losses in fencing? I don't know much about this discipline and only follow the results because of the good performances of the Italians.
Edited by copravolleyExpandAnd 6 medals for Italy

But I would count only 1 medal for Ukraine right now. Weight control is tomorrow
The day started badly for us but ended great. We won many unexpected medals again but we also took some 4th places. These games are totally crazy for us but also unlucky. I'm counting on Tambieri the most tomorrow and on Sunday on women's volleyball team. The last time we won gold in a team sport was in 2004 in women's water polo.
Expand3 medals is a realistic scenario but none of these medals is guaranteed.
How many medals do you expect for Italy until the end of the Games?
I think that 35-36. We already have one medal secured thanks to the women's volleyball final, so we have 31. Unfortunately, we have 15x 4th places. Today, 4th place again in swimming. This is a very unlucky competition for us.
ExpandI would say we are not focused on the place in medal table ) Number of medals is more important these days.
I think it is a surprise giving the strength of Polish team. And I think Poland will be ahead of us at the final.
You're right. The medal table can be started to be looked at in the last weekend of the games.
Edited by copravolleyExpandWell, from now on,
's medal rate will unfortunately drop significantly.

Our real opportunities of gold medals are now inferior than 10 I think (L茅on Marchand no longer has an individual race
). We lost too many gold medals in Judo and Fencing (only two last hopes for tomorrow).
But we will be happy to beat our record for medals in the Olympic modern era, and I hope that our athletes will exceed 50 medals at least.

In any case, this first week was incredible and full of emotions.

Finally, it will be interesting to compare the performances of the 2012 hosts: the UK, with the 2024 hosts: France.

In my opinion, a system of financing sports should be developed that is independent of the current government or authorities. Such a hypothetical amount of money per year should, for example, increase proportionally to inflation and GDP growth.
