Expandyeah, they have quite a good tradition in Basketball (other than winning some silver and bronze medals in the Asian competitions, they qualified to the Basketball World Cup a few times and they did even beat Venezuela and France in 2006 and Canada in 2010...they ended up just one win short of qualifying for Beijing 2008 also).
Yes, sorry, I should have remembered about basketball.
My apologies

Wish there was a better flag available for an all-Ireland team...
Lebanon just need to beat to reach the last 8

Can anyone think of a Lebanese team doing well in a team sport before today?

ExpandEngland beat France 42-18 but don’t show the ruthlessness they showed against Samoa last week.
England are officially the first team to qualify for the quarter finals
beat
60-4
Still think was better
Personally I'm waiting for to have someone competing in this...
ExpandI can only see that there are 9 judges voting for one boy/girl or another and the number of favourable judges determine the result...no idea about rules and criteria (and frankly I'm not interested to discover them)...

As long as nobody knows the rules then nobody can criticize the judging
Expandexactly...
and of course France has already been spotted by the judges at no. 1 in both the boys and girls events.
no doubt that they will win a lot in the next couple of years and especially at the Home Olympics.
gotta love the activities where the ranking is already known before the start.
Are there any rules for judging it this time?
I remember that at the Youth Olympics it was basically "Which do you like best? The one going first or the one going second?" and that's how they decided who won
ExpandQuite excited to see how this goes. The number of entrants is a good size, 53 nations in B-Boys and 43 in B-Girls, that's a more than a few of the traditional Olympic sports.
Also love some of these names, it's great we have another sport besides the horses in equestrian with some funny and ingenious names.
Oh, I'd be so tempted to give myself a stupidly long and meaningless name just so the commentators had to mention it all the time.
"Great move by Albuquerque Slim, the Miniature Goat Terminating Tyrant of North Korean Whicker Basket Craftmanship there..."
ExpandAnd another dramatic finish as
just hold off
18-12.
On to the second tranche of games starting Friday!
If you follow the other type of rugby you might think this is a shock but, as I've said before, the Wales team used to be made up of star amateur rugby union who went to the North of England to earn a living and that doesn't happen any more.
In fact, had a full team from the top level leagues in Australia and England/France,
had only one player from those leagues.
beat
34-12 but it was a good performance from Greece.
Quick history lesson.
Rugby League split off from Rugby Union in the late 19th century.
Rugby Union remained an "amateur" sport for another century but rugby league immediately became professional and had a a "rugby league" based in the North of England which was why the sport got its name.
"League" developed roots in New South Wales and Queensland in Australia and the South of France as well as parts of New Zealand and Papua New Guinea but never got bigger than that.
Along the way the rules changed. Instead of 15 players as rugby union has, there are only 13 in rugby league (2 fewer forwards). There are no line-outs and scrums are a lot less important.
Traditionally Great Britain and Australia have been the giants of the sport but in the last 30 years Great Britain has split into England, Scotland and Wales and Australia have dominated the sport with New Zealand emerging as the second best team.
What used to happen was amateur rugby union players would be tempted to sign for professional rugby league teams but when rugby union went professional in 1995 that basically ended in Europe but continued for Pacific Islanders.
Now Tonga, Samoa and Fiji make up the top six teams with England, Australia and New Zealand.
The weaker teams in this World Cup are made up of countries who have a lot of second and third generation immigrants in the strongest three countries of England, Australia and New Zealand.

It ended 34-12 to New Zealand. Not a great game but a fantastic display from the Lebanese to be competitive to the end of the game
Well, it's not going to last long but just now lead

Good win by 42-8 over
but I think England were the best team of the four today.
ExpandAnd that's make for 3 breakouts of coverage...
On which channels? The BBC coverage has been fine.
Even the BBC commentators were saying the all-star Samoa team were the favourites today but England just won 60-6.
