  1. In the end it was a decent Championships for us. One gold and one silver, more or less what we expected. Also two fourth place finishes (are we the new Canada? ). Our highlights (top 8 finishers) : Korakidis winning gold in the men's hammer with a WL was great, although it's too bad Polychroniou finished 4th. I really wanted both on the podium. If not for the Finnish guy, all three medalists would've had the same national anthem Filippidou silver in the women's discus with a SB was nice after her struggles this year. Hopefully next year she can get a new PB again because her progress stalled and Paris is looking unlikely for her at this point. Pavlidis 4th in the men's discus after breaking the U20NR twice, wow! I thought Bouzakis was our contender in that event but he didn't even make the final. Emmanouilidou 5th in the women's 200. I think if the conditions were better she would've had another U20NR. Her finishing 11th in the 100 was also good. I can't remember the last time we had a female sprinter this promising, probably not since Thanou. It's too bad there was no European U20 this year, she would've won gold in the 200! Kassou 8th in 3000 and 9th in 5000, also really good as we don't normally do well in these distance events. If we had a European U20 this year, she would've won medals. Rapti 8th in the women's triple jump is decent, but her progress seems to have stalled the last two years as she's barely improved her PB. She's still only 18, but she had 12.87 in 2020, 12.96 in 2021, and 13.11 in 2022. She needs a big improvement next year, something like 13.50.
  2. 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships: GOLD: Ioannis Korakidis - Men's Hammer Throw SILVER: Despoina-Areti Filippidou - Women's Discus Throw
  3. Now that @PHI2019 confirmed it's official (), Korakidis winning gold in the men's hammer with a WL is surely the highlight of the day for . I really wanted both of our guys to get on the podium, but Polychroniou lost it right at the end and got 4th Emmanouilidou was the other highlight of the day. After already having the U20NR of 23.41, she had 23.43 in the heats and then 23.20 in the semifinals . I don't think she can win a medal but making the final is already a huge achievement for her, it's too bad there was no U20 Europeans this year as she surely would've won a medal there . The goal for her in the final should be just to improve the U20NR one last time. Dragomirova 12th in the heptathlon was respectable, but her results are far too inconsistent. She needs to improve a lot in the track events. She was 20/20 in the 800 (7 seconds behind the 19th place finisher)....She is great in the field events although in the past she did much better in the long jump. Pomaski (Tentoglou's coach) said that he could've made her a 7m+ long jumper but she chose to do combined events instead. Her long jump PB is 6.44 from 2019 when she was 16 yo. She has regressed since then (as seen with 5.98 from today being her SB). Her long jump, 200, and 800 PBs are from 2019. At this age that is unacceptable, she needs to be improving... Triantafyllou finished a disappointing 12th in the women's pole vault, but I never expected her to win a medal. Maybe in 2024 though Deliu 35th in the women's 100 hurdles. Whatever.
  4. Did he win or not? Everyone reputable here in Greece went to bed after reporting that he finished in 4th place
  5. Can someone explain what is going on with the men's hammer throw? Korakidis threw 79.11 (WL), then it was later changed to a foul and he finished in 4th. Now on the World Athletics site, the official results say he won with 79.11?
  6. The weather ruined the evening but now I am back to see some results... SILVER medal for Filippidou in the women's discus! Our first medal in Cali so far, and she did it with a big SB and her second best throw of her career. Really nice to see after her season was very disappointing until now! Dragomirova 15th in the heptathlon after 4 events. She had SBs in the high jump and 200m, worst result of her career in 100 hurdles, and a mediocre shot put result (she placed 2nd in it but that is her main event where she also qualified in, so I expected a bigger throw). Bertsima and Lyri crashed out in the women's long jump qualifying. Not surprising at all. Lyri is only 16, so 6.01 is by no means a bad result, third best in her career actually (including indoors). Rapti obviously would've done better than these two, but she was not selected as she will also be in the triple jump. Can't complain about Mitsiouli either, we knew there was no chance she'd make the 400 hurdles final, but her time of 59.97 today was the second best in her career. Emmanouilidou 11th in the 100m with 11.51 (=second best of her career). So I guess she won't break Thanou's U20NR after all (this is probably her last competition of the year with the exception of the European Championships in Munich where she will only run in the 4x100 relay). However she is also competing in the 200m here, where she already holds the U20NR and barely competed at that distance this year, so I think she has plenty of room to make a new U20NR. Triantafyllou didn't get to compete as the women's pole vault final was moved to tomorrow.
  7. Greece not even sending a team. With our coasts, lakes and rivers, we should really try to do better at this sport. Most of our rowers are from northern Greece, I wish we would try to develop this sport in southern Greece (as there aren't really many rowing clubs there outside of the Athens area and a few islands). It's a wasted opportunity.
  8. Thanks for this. So I guess our athletics federation is not as stupid as I thought Though Florou-Dimitriadou still should've been selected, anyone with a brain can see that her results are way more consistent than the other two.
  9. Are we sure about this? I haven't seen any event here having more than two competitors from the same country.
  10. Well, Chasos finished 13th and narrowly missed out on the men's high jump final . He passed 2.00 and 2.04 but failed at 2.08. He had 2.19 indoors and 2.12 outdoors this year, so it's quite disappointing that he wasn't able to do better and at least make the final. Korakidis and Polychroniou both made the men's hammer final and will be contending for medals hopefully Emmanouilidou had 11.55 which was enough to finish 2nd in her heat and 12th overall. She was in lane 8 and the wind was bad. She will probably need a U20NR in the semifinals in order to make the final. I'd love to see her do it. Looking forward to that! Roumtsios was close to his PB and Stamatonikolos...well at least he made the final with a PB in the qualifying (he finished 12th in the final) Mitsiouli making the semifinals in the women's 400 hurdles was a pleasant surprise. She did it with the second best time of her career, hopefully she can make a PB in the semifinals because we know she won't make the final. It's too bad Chatzipourgani has been MIA, she was our big talent from this age group in 400 hurdles. She had 59.01 in 2020 but barely competed in 2021 and hasn't competed at all in 2022. I really thought she would be under 58 seconds by now... Tomorrow is another day...would like for our long jump girls to have get new PBs, I don't know if they are capable of making the finals. PB from Mitsiouli (w 400 hurdles) and for Emmanouilidou (w 100) to make the final with a U20NR. We also have Filippidou in the women's discus final and Triantafyllou in the women's pole vault final. And Dragomirova in the heptathlon. All 7 of our athletes tomorrow are women. Filippidou prob our first real chance for a medal.
  11. Mixed Day 1 for Greece: Dragomirova was disappointing in the women's shot put, but hopefully she can do better in the heptathlon. Andreadi also disappointing in the women's shot put. Stamatonikolos into men's long jump final with PB Kallimogianni disappointing in the women's 3000 steeplechase. Generally she has been very disappointing in 2022. She's 17 and still has her PB from last year which is not good, it shows she is not developing/improving as she should be. Filippidou 2nd in the women's discus with a SB, she might have a chance at a medal here Roumtsios into the 110 hurdles semis with a big PB Triantafyllou barely made the women's pole vault final and Retsa just missed out. Another reason why Florou-Dimitriadou should've gone, she is much more consistent (in addition to having the bigger SB)... Kassou with an impressive 8th place finish in the women's 3000, 3rd place of the Europeans Mavrodontis very disappointing in the men's shot put. Day 2 will be interesting. I expect Chasos to qualify for the men's high jump final, and both of our guys (Korakidis and Polychroniou) to qualify for the men's hammer throw final. Also hoping for a new U20NR from Emmanouilidou in the women's 100 (her PB of 11.44 is so close to Thanou's U20NR of 11.43). It would be nice to see at least one of Roumtsios/Stamatonikolos get another PB after they both did so today.
  12. Same with us, we only have promising female walkers. I think part of it has to do with the sport being seen as a "women's sport" in Greece also... We did have a promising young man, but he got cancer a few years ago so obviously he has other issues in his life and is not competing these days...
  13. It often happens for us in these junior competitions, but for the Olympics probably not since 2004. I have a feeling we will have issues with the women's race walk for Paris, especially if we can't qualify in the mixed 35km event (we only have one good man but many good women, some of them will miss out and be very unhappy).
  14. Never say never, don't forget that there are opportunities in the single sculls (and lightweight double sculls) for countries who haven't qualified more than 1 boat after the World Championships. The level in the European qualifying regatta was not very high last year.
  15. The Greek athletics federation either chose to send only two or is so stupid that they don't know you can send more than two (which is also a strong possibility). For example we have four with the standard in the men's hammer, but only two are going. Also four in the men's discus, but only two are going. No drama in those events because our two best are clearly better than the others who didn't get selected. She is likely vaccinated because she is leaving next month to go study in the United States. Also her and her coach filed a complaint against the federation for her not being selected, so if she was unvaccinated I'm sure they wouldn't have done that.
  16. Well I ended up being right about all of this Greece won the U19 medal table, great to see us "on top of the world" Argyraki/Asvesta were trailing Italy the whole race, and right at the end we won gold by less than a second. Just like the Europeans where we beat Italy by less than a second. I do feel sorry for the Italian girls because they also deserved to win a gold (especially since both regattas were in their home, it would've been nice for them), but our girls showed heart in the end and I'm pleased with their performance. Then we had the men's quadruple sculls, it was a really great race and I'm glad we managed to reach the podium. Papazoglou is from 2005 and Cholopoulos from 2006, so perhaps we will see them medal next year in the double and Cholopoulos in 2024 in the single Dalidou/Natsioula dominated the race from start to finish as expected, and did so with a U19 world record Gkogkou also dominated her race from start to finish to win gold in the single sculls What a year it has been for Greek women's rowing, 8 gold medals (3 at the European U19s, 2 at the World U23s, and now 3 at the World U19s). I'm sure we will take some more at the European U23s as well.
  17. Big drama in Greece regarding our women's pole vault selections. Alina-Amalia Florou-Dimitriadou had the best result this year (4.16m) but Anastasia Retsa (4.15m) and European U18 champion Iliana Triantafyllou (4.15m) got chosen ahead of her. Retsa won the U20 National Championships so it makes sense, and she finished 4th at the last U20 World Championships. Florou-Dimitriadou (who is the most consistent of the three) finished second at the U20 National Championships, but Triantafyllou who finished third at the U20 National Championships got selected ahead of her. Personally I think whoever didn't get selected would've felt robbed, but I think Florou-Dimitriadou should've been chosen ahead of Triantafyllou. If the National U20 Championships count for the selection then that should be made more clear. Especially since Triantafyllou is still U18, she could've sat this one out as she'll have another chance in the future.
  18. 2022 U19 World Championships Gold: Elisavet Argyraki and Ioanna Asvesta (women's pair) Sofia Dalidou and Styliani Natsioula (women's double sculls) Aikaterini Gkogkou (women's single sculls) Bronze: Panagiotis Adam, Nikolaos Cholopoulos, Apostolos Lykomitros, and Dimitrios Papazoglou (men's quadruple sculls) Τερματίσαμε στην ΠΡΩΤΗ θέση στο συνολικό πίνακα των μεταλλίων! Η Ελλάδα στην κορυφή του κόσμου!
  19. So bizarre that Kyriakopoulou did not qualify. She won bronze in 2012 and silver in 2018. Obviously she is older now but she was just at the World Championships in Eugene. Her case is interesting, as she did not achieve the qualifying standard and does not have enough results this year to have a ranking (she skipped the indoor season and was NM at the National Championships). I can't see us doing as well as we did in 2018, when we won 6 medals, 3 of them being gold. I think we probably expect 2-3 medals this year. I'm looking forward to seeing our women's 4x100 relay team. As long as everyone is healthy, they'll surely achieve the best time for us in many many years.
  20. 2022 U23 World Championships Gold: Christina Bourmpou and Evangelia Fragkou (women's pair) Evangelia Anastasiadou (women's lightweight single sculls)
  21. 2-1-1 for us, actually our best EYOF ever (though we've won as many as 6 total medals in the past but not this many gold)
  22. I think we'll do even better in the U19 finals. We were second in the medal table at the Europeans in May (we had 3-1-0 and Romania had 3-1-1). Dalidou/Natsioula not winning gold in the women's double would be a huge shock. They won their heat by 7+ seconds, they won their semifinal by 9+ seconds, and even at the Europeans they won the final by 9+ seconds. Gkogkou is clearly the favourite to win gold in the women's single sculls as well. She won her heat by 13+ seconds and won her semifinal by 7+ seconds. She beat everyone else in the final easily already with the exception of the German sculler. They haven't faced off yet but the German has not been winning her races by big margins the way Gkogkou has. It would also be pretty funny if Gkogkou wins the World U19 title, as she placed only third at the National Championships in this event (Natisoula won gold and Kontou won silver). I'm concerned about Argyraki/Asvesta. I'm confident that they'll win a medal, but I feel it may not be gold even though they are also the favourites to win, they have won races by less than one second. As for our men's quadruple sculls, it's really even between , so it's hard to predict but I hope our boys can win a medal. Our team is super young compared to most others so that will be a good sign as the rest of our young men have been quite disappointing.
  23. This table doesn't really do us justice. We only sent 6 crews. The men were mediocre unlike last year where they won two golds (all of those athletes are too old for U23 now). However, our women were amazing. Bourmpou/Fragkou won gold in the pair with a U23 world record (Bourmpou already had the previous record from 2019 with Maria Kyridou). Anastasiadou won gold in the lightweight single sculls with a U23 world record. Although it's not an "Olympic event," having an athlete win a gold in that event, in my opinion, is far more important than winning in a four or quadruple sculls. It's one of the strongest events with many entries, and obviously the goal is to be in the lightweight double sculls at the Olympic level. Our other boat was 16 yo Dimitra Kontou in the women's single sculls who finished in 5th place, in a very strong event. Not only was she the youngest athlete in her boat class, but she was the youngest athlete in any boat from any nation in either gender at the entire World U23 Championships (not including coxswains). She did great and it seems that her and Anastasiadou will try to qualify for Paris together in the lightweight double. I guess we split them up here because Anastasiadou was guaranteed a gold in either event, so we probably put Kontou in the single to see if we could get two medals out of them instead of one.
  24. Probably yes, but I am not sure if they can win medals at this year’s World Championships. A lot of them are very young and we will have a better idea over the next two years as they develop. The Kyridou sisters were also banned from the national team, so they’re out until next year (the reasons are totally ridiculous, only in Elladistan do these things happen…). Bourmpou/Kyridou dominated juniors and U23s together and finished 5th last year in Tokyo as 20 year olds, but it seems like they had a falling out as they no longer follow each other on Instagram (they used to say even when they were winning everything together that they did not get along with each other). There is major drama within the federation and it includes the athletes feuding with each other. It’s too much to explain and I’m sure I only know 5% of it as an outsider. The Kyridou sisters are training hard in the pair for Paris, and Bourmpou showed up at the World U23s this week with Fragkou, also in the pair. So I have no idea who will be our women’s pair in Paris, and if the others will go to the sculling events or the four. Right now Kyridou/Kyridou and Bourmpou/Fragkou would both be great crews, but obviously we can only send one team per boat class. Honestly we could have Anastasiadou/Kontou in LW2X, Kyridou/Kyridou in W2-, Bourmpou/Christodoulidis/Dalidou/Tsamopoulou (or maybe Argyraki? Asvesta? Pergouli?) in W4-, and Fragkou/Natsioula in W2X, all possibly contend for medals in Paris. There are others like Gkogkou and Arabatzi that may be capable as well. A lot will change in the next couple years and I’m sure some will probably quit the sport (look at Asoumanaki for example, who was 4th in Rio as a 19 year old in W2X and quit rowing). Nikolaidou hasn’t competed internationally or nationally since 2019, and she said after Tokyo that she wanted to come back for Paris and was waiting for her injuries to finally heal. However it seems that she is working at a hotel on Santorini nowadays… There might also be some new names emerging. Kontou was barely a thought last year, now suddenly she is our big teen prodigy and we’re talking about her maybe winning a medal in Paris when she’ll be just 18. On the men’s side, it’s not so good after Ntouskos. Hopefully between Papakonstantinou, Stergiakas, Papachristos, Kalandaridis, Palaiopanos we can make some type of competitive crew that can contend for a medal.
  25. With a big new PB of 3.95! Wow! Her PB progression is really solid: 2018-2.90 2019-3.31 2020-3.56 2021-3.70 2022-3.95 With Triantafyllou winning gold at the European U18 Championships a few weeks ago, and now Panagiotou winning gold here, the future of Greek women's pole vaulting seems to be promising again after some others like Kassotaki and Postika totally failed to live up to expectations in recent years.
