ExpandMirabai Chanu will have her event at the World Weightlifting Championships 2019 tomorrow at 4.30pm IST. Sadly we can't watch it.
The livestream on Olympic Channel is blocked and IWF say star India has the rights. But I asked Star India who said they haven't bought any such rights for the event.
great expectations from her...if she does 200+ she stands a chance for medal
ExpandAgain same question arises whether Vinesh has taken right decision by moving to 53 kg.... some one has said that she was having issues in adjusting her weight to 50 kgs.... but she did it perfectly in asian games 50 kg by defeating both sun/irie.... after great difficulty she got adjusted to sun and irie and started defeating them
Now again in 53 kg she should get adjusted to new opponents particularly from japan.... though she has enough time to do it
what ever it be vinesh is too good to be defeated twice in a tournament
Hopefully she prooves herself by winning the quota tomorrow
Some where i read that Asian games is an one day event so adjusting to weight is not a issue and so she partcipated in 50 kg there
After Asian games rules have changed and wrestling has became 2 day event and she has to weigh in for 2 days before the matches and so she has decided to shift to 53 kg
Again as i said she is too good to be defeated twice... she won the quota and bronze medal by defeating her opponents easily
i hope she gets a measure of Japanese wrestler and north korean wrestler (she defeated mukaida easily) for aasured olympic medal
Now its Bajrang turn to prove his mettle and get the quota and medal

ExpandWhat a day for Indian boxing all four in the pre quarters reached quarters......... Amit demolished the TUR boxer pretty easily a 5:0 boxing lesson, kavinder against a unranked FIN started well ......round 1,2 he was well ahead but had a poor 3rd and came ahead 3:2 ...... Manish was really impressive against a 4th seeded MGL, he is really fast, won a fine 5:0 , Sanjeet I was really impressed by, he was really good against world no 2 UZB...... A real 4:1 thrashing which should have been 5:0 IMHO
Great news

Fingers crossed for that elusive Olympics Gold with shooters performance in recent period......
I hope our shooters are not peaking too early and they maintain their consistency atleast for one more year
Crucial September month for India with world wrestling, world weightlifting, world boxing and world athletics events......
these events will indicate india preparedness for olympics...
its pity that neeraj will not be participating
Expand
Guys what do you think about this?
The medals predicted by gracenote seems to be on higher side..... though i will be the happiest person if India wins 14 medals
this time they have not given details of who is going to win medals.....it seems that they have given more medals in womens boxing, wrestling and shooting!!!!
ExpandMadhu ji, let me comment on Vinesh and Amit.
Vinesh: it was on cards considering she has had difficulties in cutting down weight and has admitted to struggle. Remember 1st qualifying tournament during Rio 2016 where she failed to be under 48? Secondly, her decision of shifting to 53 (which she feels is natural body weight) seems justified for now. Only a couple of losses - one to Chinese whom she later defeated at Asian repechage and then Mukaida. So been doing pretty good so far, reaching two ranking tournament finals and bronze at Asians.
Amit: As far as international tournaments go, he has participated in two and won both at 52. At Asians in April, he defeated Hasanboy (Gold at 49 in Rio) again, and before that the Chinese (Bronze at 52 in Rio). Also his level could be guaged from his domestic domination. At 52, we have some good boxers like Sachin, Gaurav... but Amit does stand apart.
Hope that answers your question!
Thanks for clarifying on Vinesha and also Amit.....I know that they are too good and thats why i kept them in good bets for olympic medal
Hopefully in one year time they will become more stronger in their new weight categories
Worrying signs:
Injury to Neeraj Chopra
Dip in form of both Womens and Mens badminton players (its major worry as we have won one medal here in last 2 olympics)
Inconsistent play by mens hockey team... though womens team is doing little better
Even though they qualify Its better not to talk about archery considering their performance in last 3 olympics particularly womens team.... mens team is doing little better...
Change in weight categories for indian athletes who are medal contenders (Amit phangal, Mary kom, mirabhai chanu, Vinesha phogat).... btw can some one throw more light on change in weight category of Vinesha as her case is not forced change like others
Good bets
Vinesha Phogat in womens wrestling... she has some thing in her.... even though she has changed her weight category to 53 kgs (which am unable to understand even now considering she won the gold at Asiad in 50 kgs) she is too good to be defeated by wrestler from countries other than japan or russia
Mirabhai Chanu in weight lifting…. only worrying factor is change in weight category from 48 kgs to 49 kgs
Amit phangal in Boxing... again worrying factor is change in weight category to 52 kgs from 49 kgs in which he won gold at Asiad
Womens boxing - I have a strong feeling that atleast one of womens boxer will win a medal...
apurvi chandela / manu bhaker in shooting
Hi all....With exactly one year to go for 2020 olympics its definitely time to look into how India is shaping out for tokyo.
Best bets:
Excellent form of Bajrang punia... i hope he will maintain that consistency for one more year
Tremendous form of Saurabh Choudhary in 10 m Air pistol
Performance in Shooting Mixed events both 10 m Air pistol and 10 m Air Rifle.... i think India has won gold in these categories at many events
I think if India is going to win Gold at Tokyo it has to be from above
In Hockey and kabbadi same story... india is overwhelming favourite but lost the story shockingly
In kabbadi it seems ok as iran is improving a lot and olympics is not at stake
in Hockey its unforgivable that India lost the easiest way of olympic quota.... mens team losing to malaysia is beyond imagination...over confidence killed them
ExpandThe Indian contingent isn't faring well. We are losing medals in wrestling, boxing and shooting. The big guns are not firing with the Olympic qualification coming up.
I agree with boxing.....which is surprisingly under performing after good commonwealth games....
But i feel in wrestling and shooting we have done a good job... we won 2 golds in both sports where competition is at par with olympics (particularly wrestling)
What i feel winning 10 medals at asiad games and none at olympics is a matter of concern.... last Olympics we won only 2 medals one in badminton and one in wrestling.... none in shooting and boxing
Ultimate benchmark should be olympics.... in that way some of the medals(wrestling, shooting, athletics, badminton) which we won this time, there is chance we can replicate the same at the olympics.... in hockey and TT we have shown improvement
Edited by Madhusudhan
If not for the Afro asian games at the Athletics India should have added atleast 5 more golds by now.
Only take away is India athletes are getting a feel of world level competition at the Asian games....
Hi all.. good to see india performing so well at these asian games.....particularly by winning medals in Equestrian, Sepaktakraw, Rowing, Wushu, Bridge and now TT
Beating Japan and entering semis in TT is definitely highlight of these games
Sumit nagal was about to create some sort of upset in davis cup, but as usual lost his way in final set after leading 3-0 (2 breaks) with fatigue.... yesterday it was out doubles team who lost their way with one game away from 2 sets lead
This is umpteen time an indian player is facing physical problems even in indian conditions..... am unable to understand this
India finished 7th in FIBA Asian challenge by defeating chinese taipei
India created a huge upset in FIBA Asian challenge by defeating top ranked China... Unbeliavable
Expand@Prashanth @Madhusudhan will be writing a blog about my experience. Will share the link here when it's done. Regarding Madhusudhan's question, yep the atmosphere is electric. But on tv you have the option of following everything. So pros and cons in both. I would definitely advise that being over there is much more fun!
Moreover, now you can carry a smart device with you and stream whatever you want to follow, a lot of people were doing that. Let's Tokyo 2020!
Will be eagerly waiting for your blog.... I hope you share all your experiences w.r.t. games i.e. atmosphere, tickets, accommodation, food etc
Btw thanks for replying on my doubt... I had been to commonweatlh games in Delhi... i missed crucial india vs pak hockey match because i did not got ticket for that match and booked ticket for athetics during same slot... as you rightly said with so much of live streaming now a days it should not be a problem
ExpandCan you guys share the Rio experience those who were there with events and other stuffs...Photo if possible so that all can relive the Rio events back again.
Does some one in this forum really went to RIO for games.... if so kindly share their experiences
I have a doubt whether mutli sports events like asian games, olympics should be watched by going there or watched on TV..... obviously TV allows you to watch multi events in a day and where as if you go there you can attend at the max 2 events per day but the atmosphere should have been electric
So the guys who went to RIO would be in better position to explain this...
Expand2016 FIBA Asia Challenge
India 53rd ranked team defeat higher 27th ranked Philippines 91-83 in the 1st match and are now top ranked team and hope they go through the QF and more and make a mark in the sport which India deserves to go higher. They are few outstanding players in the team and are world standard and would find place in many top rated team.
Amjyot singh has been praised by FIBA for an superb play and considers him one among top players in Asia..
Good win over phillipines... but India lost to chinese taipei..... need to win 2 more matches to ensure a QF berth
ExpandTennis
Saketh Myneni gave a mighty scare to the world number 49 Jiri Veseley before limping out of the US Open as leg spasms scuttled his victory march.
Good effort by Saketh Myneni.... but this is second time he gets cramped in a 5 setter match which seems to be little absurd at professional tennis (luckily he got through against korean in davis cup as korean was also in same position)
So India's love with loosing the plot at the last moment continues even after olympics... 1st it was india cricket team making a mess out of scoring 8 runs from 6 balls... now Saketh continues it by losing the match despite leading 5-2 in final set and having match point
ExpandSorry for the delay. Continuing my assessment, Weightlifting:
I expected 1 lifter in each gender to qualify for Olympics. We did that. We came back strong in 2015 WC after a bad 2014 WC. We even came close to qualifying a second female lifter. (If Russia/Kazakhstan/Belarus were removed from WC rankings, there is a very good chance that we would have qualified 2 female lifters).
Team selection was pretty straightforward. At present, Mirabai Chanu is our best lifter by a margin. She is capable of winning medal in Olympics/WC. She was a long shot for medal here as well. It was sad seeing her failing to register a lift in C&J. I feel that in Weightlifting, one should always try and get a valid lift, because even if you finish 4th or 5th now, there is a chance that in future you might get a medal. But, I understand that being too conservative is a difficult decision. When you are close to medal, you don't want to finish just outside medals and wonder what if I had started at a higher weight. She is still young and has the legend Kunjurani Devi as her coach, so she should get stronger from this experience.
Rest of the team is also progressing nicely. I am confident that we will have multiple female lifters in Tokyo.
Satish Sivalingam just edged Vikash Thakur to become our sole male lifter in Rio. He broke his PB in Olympics, which is always a good sign.
In Men's section, we still have to cover a lot of ground. We need a good team of 4-6 lifters to have any chance of qualifying multiple lifters. There are a number of youngsters who are good and have won medals at Junior and Youth World Championships. With proper training, hopefully they will transition to seniors nicely and we would be in hunt for multiple quotas at Tokyo.
Also, a note on those who are talking about how Mirabai would have won medal if she managed to lift equal to what she was lifting in training. In competition, there is tighter body control, so everybody lifts lesser weight compared to training. Also, more pressure in actual competition.
Excellent analysis on all sports... Mirabai chanu lifted 192kgs during selection trials which is silver medal position at Rio, doesn't they have to maintain weight control during trials... what ever it be she managed only one lift out of 6 possible lifts which is really disappointing.... 4 kgs below her personal best would have fetched her bronze, i think pressure got to her... only good thing is she has still age on her side
