ExpandShemyakina won a bronze medal in 2014 Worlds and was one of our leader but leave the squad due to pregnancy (she has 2 daughters if I'm not mistaking, so she chose family instead of sport). And speaking of foil we have back in the day Sergiy Golubitskyi, who was Olympic silver medalist and won some medals in other competitions and coached his wife Caroline Golubitskyi - one of the German foil specialists. Even in women's foil we had medal in Women's foil at the European championship - it was Olha Leleiko, our current national coach. So no, we are pretty good fencing country, and depending on generations of our athletes some events are more "profitable" for us and some don't.
I remember Caroline Golubitsky. She competed with Vezzali for a while but not for long. Rita Konig, whom Vezzali defeated in the final of the Olympic Games in 2000, was more famous, as well as Sabine Bau and Anja Mueller. From what I remember, the Germans competed fiercely with us at some point, but they almost always lost.
ExpandNo, our epee was good always, we have Shemyakina, who was Olympic Champion in 2012, Reizlin with bronze in 2020, medalists of Worlds like Kryvytska (who is our finisher today), Svichkar (who is our finisher in men's side) and Stankevych, European champion Kharkova, medals in other conpetitions from men's team epee who were one of the main contenders in Tokyo, but unfortunately failed to take a medal.
Shemyakina that was a very strange story. She unexpectedly won the games but before and after she literally achieved nothing. After that success in 2012 she also completely disappeared. It's only in epee that such strange situations. That's why I've always preferred foil and sabre, because the top was more stable there, although that's changing now. The competition has grown a lot all over the world.
Until recently, Ukrainian fencing was just Kharlan and sabre. Maybe epee sometimes. I don't remember them ever was strong in foil. There was a time when Russia, Romania and Poland were strong in foil at that time when Italy dominated but I don't remember Ukraine anymore.
Hungarian women with Aida Mahomed were too strong for many years.

But in women's epee another defeat by Ukraine. We are slowly developing a complex about this country, because we are constantly losing to them in sabre too. Sabre has always been Ukrainian, epee for a draw or our slight advantage but a failed in women`s foil, which is already a shocking novelty
ExpandC'mon, Cerioni isn't good? Nice joke
I would give the team to Cerioni for centuries. Just give them time

There is a difference between the Italians in 2012 and in 2024. The gold in the team in Paris should be ours. In my opinion, the USA now has the best training staff and that is why many fencers go there.
ExpandMyroniuk trained in the USA (that's why she is European vice champion), others I assume trained in Ukraine
And will the sabers team continue to train in Bologna? Kharlan will now be getting married to Samele, so she can safely settle down in Italy permanently.
Men`s team is in finale but women's team raises concerns. Summer games totally failed, no generational change. I fear the US will dominate women's foil for many years to come.

The squad was reserve, but that's a disgrace. Apart from Favaretto, there's no generational change. Without Volpi and Errigo, we're very weak. After Paris, it was already clear that the USA had clearly overtaken us. Cerioni isn`t the miracle worker he once seemed.
Edited by copravolleyExpandBut Poland raised her Mother, it's sad that she was not patriotic and did not have more influance on daughter to represent Poland. Italy is strong enough
Her mother has represented Italy in veteran competitions for many years. She was last in the Polish national team in 1991, from what I've read. Then she went to Italy, she has a husband here, a job: a club and the Italian federation for a few years ago. Her daughter was born in Italy and went to school here. The situation is similar with Jasmine Paolini. I don't know what kind of connections her doughter has with Poland but her first option was definitely Italy. Maybe in the future she'll look at Poland if the Italian squad is unavailable to her. I don't even know if she has a Polish passport. You'd have to ask her.
Edited by copravolleyExpandyeah, but she's been raised in
and has always represented
(she won a few medals among the cadets/juniors with our team)
Her mother has lived in Italy for over 30 years and competes for us in veteran competitions. Additionally, she worked in the Italian federation in the epee training staff from 2006 to 2014.
Expand"only" a silver and a bronze medal for
in Today's team events
still, a very good start of the season for us (at least, where possible...the women's sabre is just a lost cause), given that we have (even too much) rejuvenated teams in all the weapons, except for Foil
But Fiamingo and Santuccio will return this season? What hurts the most is that Federico Vismara ended his career at the age of 27. Marco Fichera did the same after Tokyo 2021. Such fencers will be missed. As for women's sabre the Italian coach from Bologna led the Ukrainians to gold at the Olympic Games in Paris. Sure, they have Kharlan and we don't but the rest of the team is pretty average. Maybe the coaching staff for the girls should change, because something has clearly not been right in recent years.

1st and 2nd place in women's epee + 2nd and 3rd place in men's epee. Importantly, for men they are very young guys. Unfortunately, Federico Vismara ended his career at the age of 27, just like Marco Fichera did a few years ago at a similar age. This is a bit of a problem, because these were fencers at the ideal age for this competition: 27-28. It's a shame to lose such people, but it's important that there are young people behind them.
Only an Italian can lead 25-17 in men's epee and lose. We are the biggest suckers of these games + the worst form in the entire 3-year cycle. The entire staff from sabre and men's epee to be replaced.
2nd Olympics in a row, when we have much worse results than at the World Championships. Here, basically everyone fails, except for the gold medalists in the team epee women. Women's foil out of shape, men's epee out of shape. I don't believe in the men's team foil. What's the point of dominating the World Championships and then getting beaten at the Olympics. For now, 4 medals is a disaster and a result worse than in Tokyo. Unfortunately, fencing will ruin these games for us. 4 medals without Russia's participation is a disaster.
Edited by copravolleyCongratulations to the USA. They were better in every way. For us, silver is a defeat. In a competition without Russia, this 2nd place is the worst possible for us. On top of that, without an individual medal. I expected more from Cerioni, because Kiefer is great but I thought that at least we had a better team.
Our foil fencers are out of shape here. No individual medal, now a defeat in the final. A low win against Japan in 1/2. Too bad. If we win some unexpected gold, then in a moment one of our sure bets will fail, of which we don't have many. So far only Ceccon has fulfilled the role of favorite. Overall, fencing is in big minus, apart from one gold in epee. You can't have a good Olympics in the top 7-8 in the medal table if you only have 2-3 sure-fire gold medalists, and 1 of them fails.
Italy have a big problem in sabre general, but among women, it was almost a miracle that we advanced to these games. We have a problem because our fencers are simply average. France became a leading power in 3 years and after Tokyo 2021, they started from a level similar to ours. In men, our all saber team is also saved once again by a veteran - Samele, who in Montano's times was considered a solid average fencer rather than a champion.
Edited by copravolleyI`m happy about the medal for Hungary, because it`s one of the most traditional fencing nations in Europe, alongside Italy and France.
Finally! If we lost this tonight, I wouldn't be able to sleep all night. Now I'm going to drink.

Kharlan has been training in Italy for many years. Maybe in the future he will become a good coach and improve the level of Italian women's sabre, which has been very weak for years.
