Amazing that he remembers where the finish was 13 years ago. Totally didn't look that up before the stage If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! heywoodu 13,499 Posted July 2, 2021 #144 Share Posted July 2, 2021 Promising stage today, finally a real long stage and not one of those stages where it's 200+ kilometers of nothing but flat A mini-classic, that's what's needed to exhaust the riders and make the rest of the race more interesting. Perfect chance for a breakaway, because who is going to control the pace in the peloton? There don't seem to be many likely contenders to do so. Can't really decide whether I think it'll be a breakaway or a diminished sprint. Van der Poel could certainly try staying in yellow and people like Colbrelli and van Aert could find it interesting as well while Alaphilippe may see potential for yellow. Van der Poel could pull a Van Avermaet however going into the break himself while in yellow. But it could be a breakaway as well. That's the most likely ending, but I'm not too sure. But Alpecin has been doing a ton of work, no way they can't control 250km by themselves. Quick-Step doesn't seem likely to help them, Colbrelli is good enough but his team couldn't even control a stage like this in the Dauphiné, let alone here (especially without Haig). Matthews is strong enough as well, but the day his team pulls at the front for more than a few kilometers has yet to come. Van Aert doesn't seem to have the shape he had last year... Van der Poel might give it a try indeed, he'll be stepping out of the Tour relatively soon anyway and so is no danger for anybody. The only other breakaway-avoiding option I see, like you said, is Alaphilippe (if the breakaway is close enough). Agger 1,576 Posted July 2, 2021 #148 Share Posted July 2, 2021 The expected madness. Could be long before we'll see the actual breakaway.
Agger 1,576 Posted July 2, 2021 #149 Share Posted July 2, 2021 29 in the break. UAE can't be happy about the group. Ineos could have a reason to lead as well but they're giving it to UAE. FancyFenchel
