Laraja 1,331 Posted September 4, 2020 #52 Share Posted September 4, 2020 Hey Guys, Yesterday, I watched an interview with Marcos Bukão who will be the contest director of Surfing at Olympic Games. Obviously, he talked about the Olympic competition next year and I decided to bring some news and info for you. The panel of judges will consist of: Technical Director: Erik Krammer Contest Director: Marcos ‘Bukao’ Carneiro Esmanhoto Head Judges: Richard Pierce , Glen Elliot Judges: Pritamo Ahrendt , Tory Gilkerson , Masato Kato , Dan Kosoof , Luis Pereira , Nuno Trigo , Bruno Truch Priority Judges: Ian Buchanan , Marcel Miranda The choice of those individuals was divided half a half between ISA and WSL (The Japanese Judge was a choice made by Japan) The choice of judges by WSL was by indication, ISA chose their judges by performance. The judgment criterias in Olympics, will be the same of WSL and ISA competitions. There's no difference at this point. The competition Format: 20 surfers in each gender. First Round - 5 heats with 4 athletes, the best 2 qualifying. Then, Repechage Round - 2 heats with 5 Athletes, the best 3 qualifying Then, Round of 16, Quaterfinal, Semifinal, Bronze Medal and Gold Medal. The time of each heat may vary between 25 minutes and 40 minutes. But, only between rounds. CANNOT have time change only on the heats of First Round, for instance. Likely, there will not have Duo Heat. The window of competition is more than enough There will be a gap between each heat, differently of happens in WSL Tour and ISA World Games. During this time, the athletes will be introduced to the audience and they'll have to paddle for the next heat competition. The time may vary depending on beach conditions About the Seed: This will be the seed format for first round: Heat 1 Heat 2 Heat 3 Heat 4 Heat 5 #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #10 #9 #8 #7 #6 #11 #12 #13 #14 #15 #20 #19 #18 #17 #16 (Not necessarily, the first heat will be for the seed number one, but the format is defined) He didn't get clear how the seeds will be determinated for this phase, but he hinted that. The seeds might be determinated by Qualification Hierarchy 1-WSL 2-ISA World Surfing Games 2021 3-ISA World Surfing Games 2019 4-Pan American Games So, as an example, the first heat would be between: ítalo Ferreira , Michel Bourez , The best surfer from ISA 2021 and Lucca Mesinas After the first round, the surfers will be reseeded, based on their performance. About the Beach: Do not expect big or tubular waves. But, probably we will have a constant swell. Also, I had the opportunity to ask him a question. I asked if ISA and COI already have plans for Stand-Up and/or Longboard to Paris 2024. He said that he does not believe in this addition to Paris, because he thinks is too late to arrange that. But, for Stand-up he sees a matter of time to this modality get inside Olympics, especially after CAS' decision. That's it, I hope that you enjoy! hckošice, Sindo, vinipereira and 2 others 2
Laraja 1,331 Posted October 1, 2020 #53 Share Posted October 1, 2020 Just trying to answer a very old question for Surfing Qualification. How to break the tie between surfers who ended in the same position at ISA World Surfing Games 2019. In the case of a provisional qualified athlete from this competition, also qualifies by ISA World Surfing Games 2021. So, on the old qualification system, from 2019, there's no mention of that. But, on the new one, ISA has added a method to break this tie. "In the event there is a tie in the ranking when determining the highest placed eligible athlete, the athlete with the highest heat-score total from their final heat in the respective event will obtain the quota place." And, if we consider also this point about reallocation of unused quotas: "If the athlete qualified through ISA Continental Qualifying Event – 2019 ISA World Surfing Games and/or Pan American Games 2019, the quota place will be reallocated to next highest ranked athlete in the respective event provided the athletes are within the ISA quality control ranking and respecting the maximum quota places per NOC as specified under Section B above. If no available athlete from the continents finish within the ISA quality control ranking, the place will be allocated to the next best ranked athlete, not yet qualified, regardless of the continent." So... ISA World Games 2021 will prevail over ISA 2019 and Panamerican Games, the places conquered by the surfers on both competitions will be reallocated if they qualify through ISA 2021. In this case, if I understood all these points correctly. If all surfers qualified by ISA 2019, also qualify in 2021, the new quotas from this event go to: Men's Frederico Morais ----------> There's a tie between Leon Glatzer and Angelo Bonomelli The highest score is from Glatzer Shun Murakami ----------> If any Japanese surfer qualify by ISA 2021, apart of Kanoa Igarashi who is already qualified by WSL, the quota goes to Rio Waida Ramzi Boukhiam ----------> Michael February (Only if any other surfer from RSA do NOT qualify through ISA 2021, apart of Jordy Smith who is already qualified by WSL) @dcro Alerted me to SASCOC's criteria, the surfers need to be among TOP 14 in the World, and that's not the case for February. So, if they don't accept this quota, then it goes to the best ranked surfer not yet qualified, regardless the continent. In that case, we need to wait for the results from ISA 2021 to check it out, but, again, Rio Waida is the first to get it. Billy Stairmand ----------> This quota stays with New Zeland, but now in Kehu Butler's hands Women's Shino Matsuda ----------> This quota stays with Japan , Mahina Maeda Ella Williams ----------> There isn't an eligible surfer from Oceania on TOP 30, Ella qualified on 29th position, so the best ranked athlete not yet qualified is Sofia Mulanovich Bianca Buitendag ----------> Sarah Baum But, she is in the same situation of February. She finished the competion on the 21st. So, the first to get it is, again, Sofia Mulanovich. Anat Lelior ----------> Again, there's a tie between Nadia Erostarbe and Eveline Hooft. The highest score is from Hooft
