the problem with football is that it would draw all the attention from other sports, if they participate with the overall bests...

it would be all day Messi and Ronaldo and Neymar, with no place on the stage for the Bolts, Karelins, Phelps of this world...

Good point, didn't thought about it really. Well, some also say that maybe replacing it with futsal/beach soccer would work. But then there's also Another question – if we're replacing men's football, should we replace women's too? I mean, it would be strange to have the diffrence there.

I am unashamed, at getting nothing done.

Just to add some last minute discussion, here are the bottom ten events (averaged between men and women) in my diversity index (in simple terms it weighs the number of nations which attempted to qualify to the Olympics and weighs nations which do not compete in a lot of events a bit heavier). Please note that since the qualification process is not completed, the numbers will change in the future.

1. Rowing - Coxed Eight - 0.4228

2. Rowing - Quadruple Sculls - 0.5000

3. Diving - 10m Synchronized Platform - 0.5197

4. Rowing - Coxless Four - 0.5459

5. Triathlon - Mixed Relay - 0.5695

6. Diving - 3m Synchronized Springboard - 0.5861

7. Skateboarding - Park - 0.5948

8. Rowing - Coxless Pair - 0.5996

9. Artistic Swimming - Team - 0.6154

10. Cycling - BMX Freestyle - 0.6164

Rowing has an issue attracting nations outside of single sculls and lightweight double sculls. 4/7 of their events are in the bottom ten while double sculls isn't too far behind. Synchronized diving isn't too surprising either and then you have new events which haven't had as much time to spread.

Removing field hockey would add more, I guess

It was close to being dropped for 2016.

Rowing is not a surprise, a lot of smaller nations can produce a quality boat over 2 athletes. Its no surprise its lost quotas three Olympics in a row (including Paris)

How can they remove even more quotas in rowing without dropping events? It's pretty skeleton as is. Eights already has the least amount of entrants outside of Baseball/Softball.

Rowing needs to cut 24 quotas for 2024...

It's a universal sport after all. Not like Rowing Coxed Eight

It's exactly the opposite, my friend. Only you and some other former ex-British slaves play this so-called sport, while rowing is really universal since ancient times. Anyway, you're not the smartest man alive comparing a sport with a subdivision of another sport...
