Monzanator 3,569 Posted June 10, 2021 #91 Share Posted June 10, 2021 Barbora Krejcikova comes from 3-5 down in the third set to win 9-7 vs Maria Sakkari. Obviously the most unexpected GS final since Bartoli vs Lisicki at Wimbledon.
Makedonas 1,557 Posted June 11, 2021 #92 Share Posted June 11, 2021 I am absolutely heartbroken and won't be able to sleep tonight (I'm already not sleeping and it's super late here). Maria was so close to making the final. She had match point This really hurts, but what an amazing run it was from her. Hopefully she can build on this and not be too hard on herself. thepharoah

Pennetta making USO final wasn't that much of a surprise. She made QF there three times plus one SF before winning it. And she won Indian Wells, a bigger title than anything Pavlyuchenkova or Krejcikova ever won before.

Vinci was a surprise though, and Bartoli was also in a Wimbledon final and former top 10 player, plus Lisicki always did well at Wimbledon and reached some QF and SF there before making the final in 2013. I still think Pennetta-Vinci was more surprising than Bartoli-Lisicki.

Yeah, but definitely less of a surprise than Bartoli (former Wimbledon finalist) and Lisicki (1 SF and 2 QF prior to that final), who both had beaten Serena in Wimbledon before the final. BTW, Barty-Vondrousova and Stephens-Keys were more unexpected IMO. Makedonas

Monzanator 3,569 Posted June 11, 2021 #98 Share Posted June 11, 2021 Women's doubles final will be Krejcikova/Siniakova vs Mattek-Sands/Swiatek. Let's see if Krejcikova can pull off the double. Last time a player won singles & doubles at Roland Garros in the same year was Mary Pierce in 2000. thepharoah
