So the universality quotas in men's 100m won't affect those trying to qualify by ranking. This isn't the case for the women's 100m however which does not have a preliminary round and starts in Round 1 with 7 heats, same as men's round 1. But then again, the Road to Tokyo page includes universality places into the total quota of 56. https://www.worldathletics.org/stats-zone/road-to/7132391?eventId=10229630 Maybe they just copy-pasted stage schedule from Rio? #banbestmen

No they didn't copy and paste because the women's 100m did have a preliminary round in Rio, but not this time in Tokyo. If there is a men's prelim round in the official schedule with 4 heats and a round 1 with 7 heats, the only real explanation I can see is that those universality quotas won't be counted in the 56 for men's 100m. I don't know for sure of course but it's the only logic I can see in having that prelim. And it makes sense because the men's 100m is the one that will receive the bulk of the universality quota requests.

But if Round 1 includes qualifiers from the prelim, and has 56 total athletes, it would mean some of the universality spots would technically count into the 56 total. But I still suspect it must be a schedulling error. Road to Tokyo page looks pretty definitive. #banbestmen

But going off the Olympic schedule in both the Olympic website and world athletics, there will be a preliminary round in the men's 100m. Really doubt they would make that error since every minute has to be planned for and if there is a prelim, then there will be more than 56 quotas in the men's 100m. So I just got an email from World Athletics in response to my question if unqualified athletes impact the 56 athlete quota in the men’s 100m and it’s as I suspected, they don’t impact the quota for that event: Quote Hi Daniel, In the 100m the unqualified will not impact the 56 qualified by entry standard or world rankings. Regards World Athletics Not sure what the case is for the other events. dcro
