The Worlds Athletics is a major disappointment. We should not have hoped for anything but would have liked to see how Neeraj Chopra and Hima Das would have fared. sanjaydas 9 Posted October 4, 2019 #8985 Share Posted October 4, 2019 We appreciate only PBs and SBs. Countries like China and USA only pay heed to medals. Even smaller countries are obsessed by medals only.

Just a cursory glance at our athletes' body structure, height, muscle mass compared to other top nations' athletes theres a huge difference. We may not get medals but we must moniter if we are progressing or not

nitinsanker 179 Posted October 4, 2019 #8988 Share Posted October 4, 2019 My take on the situation , careful tracking is required to understand what is happening in a sport three predictive indicators for the success of a country at a sport are ( I work in analytics so sorry my terminology may go towards 1. Performance in the World championship 2. World ranking 3. Medals at a junior level For example today we are a dominant player in Shooting , we could have predicted this 3-4 years ago when our junior team started getting many medals at the Junior world cup Now coming strictly to atheletics performance in the world championship ( number of Indian Finalists ) 2009 - 0 2011- 2 2013-1 2015 - 3 2017 -2 2019 - 3( already hoping for at least 1 more ) I think that is a good improvement especially if we touch 4 since we have 3 of our best atheletes injured - Hima , Neeraj and Dharun ( rajiv Arokia was also injured ) ...... This affected our performance heavily in 3 events as well as all the three 4*400 relays Coming to world ranking ( this is from my tracking files ) sept 10th-06 oct 1st -06 Feb-07 august 10th-08 Feb-09 nov10 sept11 Aug-12 Dec-15 Subtotals- mens - atheletics top 100 5 5 5 15 15 20 16 17 22 Top 10 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 In 11-25 0 0 0 2 2 4 3 3 4 In 25-50 1 1 1 5 5 3 2 1 6 fifty plus 4 4 4 8 8 12 10 12 13 currently we are having close to 30 in the top 100 in world ranking if I am not mistaken ( and at least 1 in the top 10 Also at the junior level we have had 2 Gold medals recently .............................. so my prediction If the same rate of increase continues we should have some atheletics medals in the next 3-4 years in world atheletics strength does not come from physical capacity but from an indomitable will. - Gandhi

I don't follow Athletics as much as I do Football, Badminton,Hockey etc and hence my understanding is limited. But to check progress in whatever sports, just counting medals isn't the right parameter but participations in World events, gradual improvement in National Records, progression to latter stages and so on. I certainly believe we are making huge strides and the results are showing. The fact that we are even discussing medals itself is huge compared to 15-20 years where we would just show up to fill the numbers
