PHI2019 188 Posted February 19, 2021 #461 Share Posted February 19, 2021 Jacinto “Jack” Cayco, who represented the Philippines at the 1948 Olympics and won gold medals at the Asian Games, died Wednesday Feb. 17 at age 96. A major figure in Philippine swimming history, Cayco swam in the 200 breaststroke at the 1948 Olympics in Helsinki, finishing 18th. He would go on to win that event at the 1951 Asian Games in New Delhi as well as a gold in the 3×100 medley relay. Cayco also captained the Philippine delegation to the 1954 Asian Games in Manila and earned a silver medal in the 400 medley relay at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. Cayco’s younger brother, Pedro Cayco, swam in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. He was 63. Pavelich assisted on Mike Eruzione’s winning goal against the heavily favored Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics. He sold his gold medal for more than $250,000 in 2014, two years after wife Kara died in an accidental fall. Also football at the Olympics was very much an East European monopoly for many years. No professional players were allowed, so officially all the Dynamo Kiev, Dukla Prague & Honved Budapest players were simple steel workers, soldiers & coal miners, who just turned out for their factory team on Sunday afternoon, after spending the rest of the week with their spades & hammers.
