Vektor 3,177 Posted May 31, 2021 #351 Share Posted May 31, 2021 I guess Argentina just gave a precedent for Japan for the cancellation with Copa America. This can mean that Games are similarly fucked if there's a rise of COVID cases at the worst possible time.
Dragon 1,676 Posted May 31, 2021 #352 Share Posted May 31, 2021 Covid cases in Japan are definitely in decline. Hope it continues like that

ARG has 40,000+ covid cases a day and increasing, JPN less than 10% of that and going down (not to compare the number of people dying among those who get the infection)... let's try to keep thing withing the correct proportion, we just can't compare JPN with South America or any other South-East Asian Nation... If this was about proportions there wouldn't be any talk about cancellation because Japan is obviously doing better than Argentina and many other countries. That won't stop everyone to freak the fuck out if a new wave starts a couple of weeks before the Games. I can guarantee you that shit will hit the fan if the timing of a new wave will be bad for the Games, even now with the cases decreasing both IOC and the entire Olympic movement have never been as hated as it is now. The reason why everything is going as smoothly as it possibly can under these circumstances is because, apart from a few professional athletes, the sports community is supporting the Games and wants it happen. There's a chance that this can change very quickly if Japan loses its grip on the virus. Tldr: Japan has to keep the cases low. A new wave can be catastrophic for the Games. Duh. Agger 1,576 Posted May 31, 2021 #355 Share Posted May 31, 2021 Let's remember that cases aren't everything. It's also very much about the number of vaccines. If you have a lot of cases among the youth but pretty much everybody who could die or need hospitalization is vaccinated it's not nearly as problematic as slightly less cases and only a few vaccinated. That's the main issue. If Japan has halfway through vaccinating the adult population it would have been a much smaller problem with the number of cases. Therefore I don't really like the comparison with European countries (as has been mentioned a few times). We're so much further in the vaccination meaning a much smaller risk of deaths. And Japan is the oldest nation in the world meaning to get what the UK has classed as vunerable - all over 50’s plus those younger with health issues - they will need another five or six months.
