More than nine months later and Van Gorkom today has announced he has officially retired from the sport.

He had been in a coma for two weeks after his accident, which was caused by a chain still being on the bottom of the starting ramp that nobody had removed yet. When he woke up, he couldn't walk, couldn't talk and only had a confused look in his eyes. Nowadays he can walk without any help if it's not too far and he can do some light work on an indoor bike, so he is definitely on the long, long road to recovery and a 'normal life'. Considering the circumstances, it's mostly good news.
