This is really the year of retirements for Greek basketball legends, everyone from that generation is gone. Spanoulis, Zisis, Perperoglou, Kaimakoglou and maybe I am forgetting 1-2 more.

Bourousis is another one who retired this year.

Some months ago there were talks about Spanoulis, Bourousis and Zisis possibly helping Greece qualify for Tokyo. That would've been so nice. Oh well...

Basketball will never be the same again for me, I grew up watching all of these guys.

:AUT Gregor Schlierenzauer (ski jumping) announced his retirement. He won everything except the individual OG gold medal.

Interesting to realize his last individual podium is already from nearly 7 (!) years ago. Time seriously flies :p

I kinda thought he had already retired, completely missed/forgot that he competed last season in a few World Cups (without success). Last week I saw super-one-day-fly Thomas Diethart is also still competing. Good that he is at least physically fine again after his horror crash.

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

Matej Tóth (Athletics - Race Walk).

Our only non canoe slalom male Olympic champion :p basically confirmed today officially the expected retirement during a press conference.

Rio 2016 Olympic Champion, 2015 World Champion, 2 times European Championships silver medalist, and 2010 World Cup winner all in the extremely demanding 50km Race Walk. 4 Times Olympian and multiple National 20km and 50km champion and record holder.

High jumper :GRE Konstantinos Baniotis

Not a big surprise as he is 34 and turning 35 next month and his career has gone downhill due to injuries the past couple years.

He has a PB of 2.34m outdoors and 2.33m indoors. He competed in three Olympic Games for Greece (2008, 2012, 2016). He won silver at the 2019 European Indoor Championships. He was 4th at the 2011 European Indoor Championships and 2012 World Indoor Championships (the three medalists there were all dopers so really he deserved gold), 5th at the 2016 World Indoor Championships, 6th at the 2009 European Indoor Championships and the 2016 European Championships, and 8th at the 2010 European Championships.

Unfortunately he never made an Olympic final, with his best jump in Olympic qualifications being just 2.22m in Rio. He made two finals at the World Championships (10th in 2013 and 14th in 2015). He won the Greek national championships many times.

:POL Tomasz Marczyński and Michał Gołaś has retired (road cycling). Both of them are 37yo now.

Double blow for Irish cycling and indeed the Roche family, as both Nicholas Roche and his cousin Dan Martin have retired this month. Sam Bennett is left to fly the flag, as the younger cyclists like Eddie Dunbar haven't yet found their place after promising junior careers.
