I did find out that Powless’ mother was a Olympian in 1992 today. She ran for Guam in the marathon. So there’s your fun fact of the day courtesy of the peeps over at Olympedia.

Father is an Iron Man triathlete also.

Ah, those innocent times when Guam was allowed to enter a squad for team pursuit at the Olympics.

Yeah, Slovenia is not poor. At all.

It always depends on the point of reference. I guess compared to Croatia no country is poor, but compared to most of Western and Northern Europe Slovenia certainly is poor(er). I don’t no anything about their sports system, but I very much doubt that they invest nearly as much in cycling as Spain/Italy/Germany/GB/France/Netherlands or even Switzerland/Belgium/Austria, still all those countries combined can’t manage to produce a single contender for the yellow jersey this year while Slovenia produced 2. No French, belgian, dutch, german, swiss or danish rider has won the Tour in the last 20 years, yet Slovenia is able to produce two guys in one year who are both superior to everyone else.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

And yeah, like you said, Slovenia is not poor country. We might be small, but we are not poor. Also, those cycling results did not came in one year.

Slovenia has very good cycling tradition, but main problem was our cyclists were always working for someone else.

I am very pleased that a Dutch team recognized hard effort and talent, put by Roglič, to work him over home athletes, such as Dumoulin and Kruijswijk.

In UAE, there was always too much burden put on Aru, finally Pogačar got the chance, though let's be honest, it is going to be very tough third week for him, relying constantly only on Polanc.

These things happen, it is no mystery.

Ireland had no great cyclists, ever - then two at once, Steven Roche & Sean Kelly.

Then nothing for 35 years and the new generation are

  1. Steven Roche’s son
  2. Steven Roche’s nephew
  3. From the very same small town where Sean Kelly lives.
