Iran, meanwhile, has basically had the same numbers every day for 3 months now. I think they are the only country with such level of consistency...

For me, the Brazilian numbers are truly frightening. They are already in top-3 of global cases with very low testing (around 3000 per 1M pop), if the present growth of cases remain in a few days they are overtaking Russia. Deaths are also climbing up fast, see news reports about Sao Paulo.

Given that the population of Brazil is not so far from that of USA (212 million vs 330 million), with significantly more detection the number of cases would be even closer to the American one.

Add to this a completely unhinged head of state (who makes even Trump a sober statesman in comparison... ) and the ingredients of a catastrophe are well and truly there.

actually Iran had more than 3000 something like 2 months ago. (with fewer tests) it went to less than 1000 for few days but almost a month after "re-opening" we see another rise in the numbers and I'm afraid it will go higher. higher than previous peak (even though still hard to compare because the number of tests are different) if you walk in the streets, some people act like the virus is gone and everything is over.

 

what Iran did was different than any other country so maybe that makes sense to be a unique case . right now there is almost no restriction, only gatherings are still banned (sport, funeral, even religious gatherings which is huge for this regime) , schools are optional and people have to wear mask in public transport (that's only for Tehran and they are not really forcing it) nothing else. almost everybody is back to work

 

and I have to say most of these new cases are from one province in South, which had only few cases 3 months ago. that province is now back to the complete lockdown. that's the hottest place in Iran, specially in summer the heat there is almost intolerable for non-local people. it seems the myth of heat kills the virus made people there to think they are safe and they didn't take all these advises seriously.

I wouldn't necessarily say "add to this", since he and his cronies are largely responsible for the situation to exist this badly in the first place...

 

And apparently today until Monday (?) are holidays and half of São Paulo says 'fuck taking care' and travels to the beach cities, where people already don't give two fucks about taking care and now that's gonna be overflowing with people from one of the world's biggest hard-hit cities, all of whom are not going to take any precaution whatsoever.

You are right of course, Bolso's attitude and policies were so unhinged for the first moment and they are responsible for the situation getting out of hand so much.

Also good point about personal attitude re precautions. On the other hand, in favelas and such many precautions would not be possible even if people wanted to.

But absolutely no excuse for ppl traveling to these beach cities from S Paulo.
