Grassmarket 2,715 Posted February 14, 2020 #15 Share Posted February 14, 2020 Wow, Romania ‘s Andrea Grecu gets a Silver medal in the Women’s Bob in Sigulda. OK, not a full field but a great achievement! I believe the Romanians used to get wins in the 1930s & even the 1960s, but I’m sure that’s their first for a good while. dcro 10,172 Posted February 14, 2020 #16 Share Posted February 14, 2020 Honestly, Romanians are just wasting their time and resources. They should either build a track and get competitive, or they should re-route current funding to some sport where it would make a difference. #banbestmen

I think the whole Romanian bob programme is funded by one guy, so he can spend his money as he likes, I suppise. Not sure about that, both their bobsleigh and luge teams have shown decent results in recent years. Yes, they’re not winning, but they’re probably the best middle of the pack nation. All it takes is one good day for them, and they potentially have an Olympic medal. They did quite good at the YOG, which obviously means very little, but it shows that they can produce some very good sliders. “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. Thing is, as we in Britain have shown in skeleton, nations that do not have a track can sometimes over-perform at the Olympics, because they are more used to learning unfamiliar tracks. What helps British skeleton is the fact the country itself is basically non-existent in winter sports. Therefore it's easier to get some funding if you show just the smallest hint of potential. It's completely different in summer sports, even in core UK events like athletics or cycling where pretty good athletes are left out in the cold because they are "too old" at age 26 or a Top 6 result is considered "below par". Anyone from UK who gets a Top 10 in winter sport is probably considered a big talent though I read about some issues for the bobsleigh team last year?
