It's completely different in summer sports, even in core UK events like athletics or cycling where pretty good athletes are left out in the cold because they are "too old" at age 26 or a Top 6 result is considered "below par". Anyone from UK who gets a Top 10 in winter sport is probably considered a big talent though I read about some issues for the bobsleigh team last year? It was a mess. Administrators could not budget, so they cut money from the women’s team & hardware going into the Olympics. Hopeless. Also there was a big cultural collision between the pilots - all from the military - and the pushers, all unsuccessful sprinters. Things are going much better this year with 100% military teams.
