I don't know for sure, but I think nowadays she has to be based with their team (where she also has a very good training partner/opponent in Jess Klimkait in the same weight class and Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard in the -63kg class)...

of course it's not like in Japan, but Canada are enjoying quite a good team in recent times (also among the men)...

they've won a lot of medals in the IJF World Tour in the last few seasons (and also this morning Constantin Gabun had a very good tournament and lost only at the Golden Score against Orujov in the round of last 16, after beating in the earlier fight the Pole Wiktor Mrowczynski), which is quite a good first step towards building a winning team also in the global events...

so, maybe Canadian Judo it's not a big deal, but for sure it's "a respectable thing"...;)

I just rewatched the final and our expert Tomasz Adamiec (former EC bronze medallist) says she lives in Japan full-time and is actually disliked by the Canadians because she allegedly takes the place away from Jessica Klimkait (at least for the Olympics anyway).

Canada may not be at the top of the judo world, but they are on pace to send one of the larger teams to the Olympics, including currently having a team for the team event. I'd classify them as a "second tier" nation in judo, definitely not on the tier of Japan/Brazil/Russia etc.

Gabun was a last minute competitor. He replaced Antoine Bouchard who for some reason or another withdrew.

:hairpull: my reaction when Fujiwara made a mistake in last 10 seconds.

De Wit and Albayrak are also out. all seeded athletes in bottom half except for guess who, Muki !

it seems even if Mollaei wins his own matches, (which is a big IF, considering his 3rd and 4rd round opponents) he has to lose/forfeit somewhere unless someone stops Muki  who is in a great shape.

Commentator on the IJF stream is not so familiar with flags...."Guam's Andrew against Cumbo of Venezuela"

Minor detail, this was Cumbo's flag: :VAN

Muki won his QF, now it's up to Mollaei...I wonder if he'll forfeit now or at least goes for it now and sees what happens.
