intoronto 4,077 Posted December 26, 2019 #21 Share Posted December 26, 2019 So we are missing Curling and Biathlon (which I suspect will be the last one to be released)

Should really be a max of 40 per country (the 30 per country limit caused many events to have unused quotas), but an improvement is an improvement. Aerials is the discipline with the least amount of countries investing. Right now you can safely assume: Canada, China, Switzerland, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia will be 6 of the 8 in the team event lol

NearPup 2,095 Posted December 26, 2019 #24 Share Posted December 26, 2019 Huh, it’s now actually quite difficult to have five short track speed skaters qualified (you need 8/9 individual quotas plus a relay quota to guarantee a fifth skater). Honestly, Snowboarding should make a move to create it’s own federation at this point. The cuts weren’t horrible, but the FIS has made it clear who they value more. Why the fuck, weren’t Nordic Combined quotas cut? Snowboard has basically the same 3 events in half-pipe, big air and slopestyle, where the same athletes can compete. It's bad enough they cut a Parallel event for them. Why should they deserve an increase in the quotas? The same can be said for Freestyle, where they even have Aerials. They should be happy to be under the FIS umbrella, because they got all those events in the Olympic program. There are enough chances for Australia, China, UK etc. to have their medals now. I agree that there should be two parallels alpine snowboard events (doesn’t require any additional venues or athletes), but it should be worth noting that big air and slopestyle already share all their athletes. At this point there isn’t much crossover between slopestyle/big air and half-pipe, only a handful of athletes do all three. Aerials is actually extremely different from anything else on the freestyle program and is extremely specialized (it sort of looks like big air but the technique is entirely different). There is essentially zero overlap between athletes in aerials and any other sport. Edited December 26, 2019 by NearPup

Alpine Skiing is the same event run 4 times... Cross Country has a redundant event as well. Aerials should be cut low key (even though it’s one of my favorites) Halfpipe and Slopestyle require two very different abilities. Big Air is redundant and I’ll give you that. Overall we’ve encouraged non-traditional NOCs to not fund or experiment in Winter Sports (which is a shame since there’s more countries than ever competing at higher levels). “Sport has the power to change the world. NearPup 2,095 Posted December 26, 2019 #30 Share Posted December 26, 2019 I would really like to see the IOC have a pool of tripartite spots that can be awarded in any individual events at the Winter Olympics, since often times countries without much of a winter sports tradition have their strongest athletes in sports where it is very difficult to qualify.
