The postponed Tokyo Olympic Games will go ahead next year "with or without Covid", the vice-president of the International Olympic Committee says.

John Coates confirmed to news agency AFP that the Olympics would start on 23 July next year, calling them the "Games that conquered Covid".

Tokyo Olympics: Games will go ahead 'with or without Covid', says IOC VP - BBC News

Here we go again with the nonsense. No, the Olympic will not happen with COVID. Just look up what happened to Mladenovic at the US Open. And then imagine if the same will go down next year at the Games, just on a much higher scale. The Olympics shouldn't happen as long as people can get disqualified if they get infected.

It makes sense because "nobody will get infected during Olympics" because nobody will be tested for Covid during the Olympics, everybody will be teste when they arrive in Japan,if negative they will compete , and probably they will be forced to leave Japan the day after the end of their last competition.

My friend works for a statistical firm who analyse clinical trials for pharma companies. He said that the vaccine trials for coronavirus are rushed and will be released asap. Normally for any drug release they try to look for short-medium-long term side-effects. But for coronavirus because of the urgency, medicines/vaccine shall be used and the observed side-effects shall be treated as we go along.
So for a proper over-the-counter medicine it will taken years. But human activity can't be stopped due to this and has to work around it.

In this scenario, 2020 Olympics must go on as it will represent human spirit and victory over the virus

Huh? Mladenovic got busted but US Open actually is still being played? The Games will go ahead because cancelling them will lose Japan more money than hosting them with limited audience and/or some top names in few events missing (presumably if they withdraw due to COVID fear). Golfers used the zika excuse to bail out on Rio and nobody dwells on that anymore. I bet most athletes would like to pursue their Olympic dreams even if they have to be quarantined for a month after the competition is over. The Olympic village will probably look different but that's the only realistic change to be expected. Some athletes that compete in the second week don't arrive on scene until the Games are well underway anyway.

Yep, the US Open is still being played, just without one of the strongest pairs in Women's Pair, which means that Babos also got fucked because of this. Now just imagine how you would feel if the Polish athletes in men's hammer throw for example would get disqualified similarly in Tokyo right before the final. Do you really want to have a Games like this? Because people will get infected and disqualified, including top athletes, you just can't prevent that from happening with such a large event. And who wants to watch a Games that's only a shadow of itself.... so either cancel the Games (postponing it is probably not an option for Japan), or let everyone play even if they are infected. (the second option is obviously only viable if the virus evolves and becomes less deadly)

This is not the US open topic but the US open is a good example on how NOT to manage the Covid pandemic in an international competition!

Mannarino who was in the same situation as Mladenovic, was allowed to play one day earlier. And the organizers then just said "oh this is not depending on us but the Nassau county health department"!

There is only one Olympics every 4 years and it cannot happen that athlete X can compete then athlete Y in the same situation cannot. And the organizers then say "oh this was the Tokyo prefecture health department"

There should be a consistent, predictable and transparent process on how someone suspected of Covid is quarantined, separated, etc. and under which circumstances one can be barred from competing. This should be communicated to the athletes well in advance and then adhered to by everyone.

I do believe that the Olympics can happen even under Covid but the organizers should learn from the blunders of this year's US open!

Well this is going to be a big blow (no pun intended :d) to the condom industry, since we know the OG brings a spike in their profits. ;)

So the IOC approved 50 measures suggested by the LOC to simplify the 2020 Summer Olympics. Coates also suggested these may become permanent changes for future Games as well. @intoronto and I are still working on trying to find a full list of the measures, but here’s some of the more interesting ones we’ve come across so far:

- Reduction of officials attending the Games by 10-15%

- No athlete/team welcome ceremonies in the Olympic Village

- Venue decoration decreased by 30-40%

Thoroughly agree.  Most of all - vastly simplified opening & closing ceremonies.

National anthem

Athlete’s Parade

Oath & Speeches

Light the flame

Goodnight & Good luck.
