Sanchez should qualify in the 50

Gabe has won medals at the world juniors, but doesn't seem like he is taking the next step sadly.

I would guess they take Sanchez for the relay either way - McIntosh and Oleksiak are both going to have heavy schedules and there is absolutely no reason for either of them to swim the heats in that relay. The women's 4x200m ain't that deep.

This is now a moot point given she qualified for the 50m.

Summer McIntosh didn’t have a super impressive 800m but it was more than enough to qualify.

Brent Hayden qualifying is a big highlight for me. Nice to see his comeback work out.

I think Summer McIntosh knew exactly what she was doing with the 800m - she wanted enough to qualify.

Pickrem wasn't tapered for this meet per her post-race interview, she's going to be really strong by the Olympics.

It was a heart warming story to see Hayden and Liendo qualify for the same event.

I was feeling a little frustrated yesterday after yesterday's results but today was more reassuring.

Gabriela Debues Stafford has chosen to do the 1500 only (opening a spot in the 1500 and 5000), Justyn Knight dropped the 1500 and Aaron Brown dropped the 100

Is that surprising Re: Debues Stafford. I thought she would want to do 5000.

wow..

This duo of sprinters is particularly notable when you look at the fact that Josh Liendo was only a month old when Brent Hayden won his first major international medal.

Hayden raced for Canada at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and wound up on the podium in the men’s 4×100 freestyle alongside Craig Hutchinson, Matthew Rose, and Rick Say. That race took place on July 30, 2002, and nearly 1 month later, Josh Liendo was born on August 20, 2002.

June 21st Athletics team update

Men's track

Men's 100: Andre De Grasse, Bismark Boateng, Gavin Smellie (3 athletes). The latter two are in the bottom 6 ranking quotas. Gavin will be at nationals.

Men's 200:  Andre De Grasse, Aaron Brown, Brendon Rodney (2 athletes). All three are pretty much locks to qualify.

Men's 400:  N/A Closest: Philip Osei is 63rd in rankings, will need a time 45.50 sub + another one at nationals to qualify. There is a C level meet in Montreal on the day the qualification period closes, so he will need results at both. He will be nationals, so one would assume he will be here too.

Men's 800: Marco Arop, Brandon McBride (2 athletes).

Men's 1500: Charles PT needs a win at nationals with a 3:39 sub time to get into a ranking spot. William Paulson is within less than a second from hitting the standard. He wont be at nationals, and not sure about his next race. Kieran Lumb is 3 seconds out too.

Men's 5000: Mohammed Ahmed, Justyn Knight, Lucas Bruchet (3 athletes)

Men's 10000: Mohammed Ahmed

Men's 110m hurdles: N/A, Joseph Daniels, is about 0.4 seconds from hitting the standard. 2016 Olympic finalist Cabral also competing.

Men's 400m hurdles: N/A, Malik Metivier, is .38 away from hitting the standard.

Men's 3000m steeplechase: Matthew Hughes, John Gay (2 athletes).Ryan Smeeton is within range of qualifying time, won't be at nationals. Jean-Simon Desgagnés is done chasing the time due to quarantine requirements

Men's 4x100 relay: Not qualified yet officially, but should. Since 3 are qualified in the individual event, +Brown and Rodney.

Total: 12, up to 19 can qualify atm.

Women's track

Women's 100: Crystal Emmanuel (1 athlete). Khamica Bingham was 0.01 from the standard earlier this season. Both will be at nationals.

Women's 200: Crystal Emmanuel

Women's 400: Kyra Constantine, Natassha McDonald (2 athletes)

Women's 800: Melissa Bishop, Lindsey Butterworth, Madeleine Kelly (3 athletes). Kelly is 45 out of 48, but nationals will give her lots of points if she is in top3

Women's 1500: Gabriela Stafford, Natalia Hawthorn, Lucia Stafford (3 athletes)

Women's 5000: Andrea Seccafien, Julie-Anne Staehli, Kate Van Buskirk (3 athletes).

Women's 10000: Andrea Seccafien.

Women's 100m hurdles: N/A. Michelle Harrison and Mariam Abdul Rashid .27 away from the standard

Women's 400m hurdles: Sage Watson (1 athlete). Noelle Montcalm 7 spots out of qualifying through the WR. However, she is the top seed at nationals, and with a win and a good time (in the 56 second range), should get her into a qualifying spot

Women's 3000m steeplechase: Geneviève Lalonde, Regan Yee (2 athletes). Butterworth and Prouse seconds from hitting the standard (so is Yee). I think one of the two will definitely make it.

Women's 4x400 relay: 2 more athletes will be named to join the individual qualifiers + Watson.

Looks like the 4x100 relay is out.

Total: 17, up to 22 can qualify atm

Road events:

Men's marathon: Ben Preisner, Cameron Levins, Trevor Hofbauer

Men's 50km race walk: Evan Dunfee, Mathieu Bilodeau

Women's marathon: Malindi Elmore, Dayna Pidhoresky, Natasha Wodak

No one qualified in 20km race walk for either gender.

Total: 8 athletes.

Men's field/Multis

Men's high jump: Michael Mason (1 athlete). Derek Drouin looks okay, but not near the standard he will need to qualify. Django Lovett is one spot out of qualification. A strong result at nationals will move him back into a qualification spot

Men's long jump: Warner has withdrawn, and won't compete.

Men's shot put: Tim Nedow (1 athlete)

Men's discus throw: Jordan Young just out of a ranking quota, and less than 2 meters from standard. ATP, a win at nationals and a PB won't be enough. He needs the standard..

Men's hammer: Adam Keenan just out of a ranking quota, and less than 3 meters from standard. A win at nationals with a 74 m+ throw will put him into a WR spot.

Men's decathlon: Damian Warner, Pierce Lepage (2 athletes). Taylor Ehrhardt will need a PB in almost all events to qualify, needs the standard.

Total: 4, could be up to 9

Women's field/Multis

Women's long jump: Christabel Nettey (1 athlete)

Women's pole vault: Alysha Newman, Anicka Newell (2 athletes)

Women's shot put: Sarah Mitton, Brittney Crew (2 athletes)

Women's javelin: Liz Gleadle (1 athlete)

Women's discus throw: Trinity Tutti, Rachel Andres are outside qualification but a few metres from the standard, cannot qualify through WR

Women's hammer: Camryn Rogers, Jillian Weir (2 athletes)

Women's heptathlon: Georgia Ellenwood, should be in the top 24 when the rankings are released (1 athlete)

Total: 9, could be up to 11

A mixed relay will be held at nationals, so room to add 2 men in the 400 is also possible.

So as of this moment Canada has 50 athletes. Up to 71 athletes can qualify. Will be an intense last week of qualification!
