Well, if you can find judges to cover 50 km long loop, be my guest.

Somehow they managed to cover the course back in the 80s or 90s?

Besides, it's only a matter of time before they install electronic chips in the shoes IMO.

Because they use these listless 2km loops everywhere these days. 50km used to be 50km around the city with a finish on the stadium. That was real athletics. Marathons are the stepchild anyway since all the big guns prefer the big payday marathons but race walking has been totally destroyed by IAAF.

actually race walking was always held in short circuits (max 3k) plus a short stint to exit/enter the stadium because they still had a restrict number of judges (the difference was that until a few years ago, the judges were taken fron the NF of the organizing Nation, so they could afford in certain cases to have a bigger number of them -but that always led to many inepts covering that role and making disasters in terms of allowing athletes to infinge all the rules or disqualifying people who were walking perfectly only because of political pressure, even more than nowadays...meanwhile right now there is a panel of judges -still bised when not corrupted, but this is another issue- who are always the same covering the global events...this was done because iaaf wanted to have more uniformity in judging, but we're still well far away from having a fair and objective situation)...

the chip question, is far from being approved...there is a lot of controversy and many coaches / athletes are against it, because it would certify that nobody is walking regularly...suspension is almost physiological at the speed they walk nowadays...and it doesn't solve the real problem, the interpretation of the knees being blocked or not, which is what makes today's race walking a farce, as they allow always the same athletes from the same Nations to run instead of walk...

I wonder if they had as good a coverage of judges ;)

Plus, sure those chips might be getting closer (as long as they're not making entering the sport more expensive), for now they're not there yet.

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

Always against Italy!

Chips showing nobody is walking regularly is not a problem: like Evan Dunfee said earlier, if the rules change, the walkers simply change with them. People who have no idea about race walking (most people that is :p) always say walkers are cheating, but that's just not true. Unless of course every foul in football is cheating as well, for example.

sure, but then you'll start seeing 20k covered in 1h30+ also in ideal conditions and 50k always over the 4 hours...

and most fans will start asking themselves why? what have we watched until now?

not to mention the issue with the current "favoured Nations" lobbying hard against anything that could put their political advantage in danger...

and the main thing is not even that...as I wrote, the real problem is that those chips don't solve the main issue of race walking (the knees blocked or not) at all, therefore they are not the medicine saving race walking nor makin' it better (or at least a bit more fair)...

p.s. it's not always against Italy...in the past, we had our days when we were taking advantage of this situation...now others do (the problem is that they do it blatantly and with extreme arrogance)...

Until they adjust and increase the speeds. It wouldn't make it perfect, but it would take a (not every) human element out of the judging and that's good.

Besides, there is not a single medicine to save race walking, but every bit helps.

The fact that nobody is walking according to the rules is known for ages and proven ever since the slo-mo cameras arrived. They flat out banned the cameras showing the walkers feet a long time ago. It's simply who can disguise the running better. For a while the Latin/Hispanic walkers were immune to any DQ but that has changed some time ago. I still remember the days when Mexicans were getting away with everything until Segura was finally DQ after the 2000 OG finish.

yeah, but the Mexicans going away with real running is always an issue...look at Guadalupe Gonzalez in London (and before that in Rio, too, but less blatantly)...
