Popular Post Sindo 1,222 Posted August 8, 2021 Popular Post #1 Share Posted August 8, 2021 Tokyo 2020 is coming to an end, I hope you enjoyed following them here in Totallympics! I know not everything was perfect, there were some nightly downs of the forum in the first days and some posts had to be deleted because of abusive behavior by certain users, but I think this is something will always happen on a populated forum. As always, since tomorrow the focus will switch to Beijing 2022 and Paris 2024, we want to be the first to start following the 2024 Olympic qualifications so I hope after some days of Olympic detoxification you will all be back on Totallympics and follow sports with us! In the next weeks, there will be some little forum’s software updates which I postponed to avoid problems just before the Olympics, and we will also move on a stronger server, to avoid forum’s down during traffic’s peaks. I will also have lots of hosting space, so I have thought I can create national sub-domain forums for the nations with lots of users who think their national thread is not enough. For example, I will try to launch https://italia.totallympics.com/, where Italian fans will have their own forum, in the same format of Totallympics but only for Italian fans who can write in Italian. This will allow the Italian community to grow independently in their own forum, and I’m sure Italians who want to interact with the rest of the world will keep using the “international” Totallympics as they are doing now. The great advantage comparing to the National threads is that everything would be more organized, with sections, threads etc., just like here. I chose the Italian example because I know how and where to search for Italian fans interested in the forum. But if any of you is interested I can create other nations’ sub-domains. I will setup the forum in the same format of Totallympics, then of course I would need one person (or more) who will take care of that forum and its development. You don’t need to be skilled with information technology because dealing with the forum is really simple and I could help you, the “difficult” part would be to start a community from scratch. That’s why I am mostly thinking to nations which already have lots of users on Totallympics, but if you are a country’s single member and you know how to bring your country’s people on the national forum once this will be ready, then we can obviously give a try. I think for many countries there are Facebook groups of Olympic fans or some small Olympic forums/websites here and there, and if you can potentially “move” them on Totallympics national forum then it would be easy for your community to grow, and then more people would start joining the forum when they find it on google. It will not be easy, but it might be an exciting experience and not a lot of your time is needed for that. So if any of you is interested to be the “community manager” (this word might be exaggerated, linkedin style ) of her/his country, feel free to contact me anytime via private message and we will start talking about the plan. I will not be able to pay you for that role, but of course I would give you the hosting for free so you would have no expenses of any sort, and you can always count on my help. Thank you everyone who contributed here during Tokyo 2020 and get ready for the next Olympic cycle! orangeman, NearPup, Grassmarket and 12 others 10 2
Popular Post heywoodu 13,540 Posted August 8, 2021 Popular Post #2 Share Posted August 8, 2021 Quickly scrolled through because somehow I had a horrible feeling that there would be an "Totallympics will end after Tokyo" post Nothing like that, the relief is huge. Now I'll read Sindo, Laraja, Makedonas and 9 others 12 If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Vektor 3,195 Posted August 8, 2021 #3 Share Posted August 8, 2021 Considering that the site is much more active during these 16 days, I think it worked really well, it only crashed a few times and most of those were scheduled maintenances at 2am CET. Unfortunately I was not aware of those 2am CET crashes because I was never online at that time before Day 1. Some days later I asked the provider to stop night backups (which will start again tomorrow ). But moving on a stronger server from next month should completely avoid these downs. Mkbw50 381 Posted August 8, 2021 #6 Share Posted August 8, 2021 In general I think Totallympics did a great job. When it crashed during the first softball game I thought 'oh no, not again' but it stayed up very well generally. And the discussion was of a high quality even with the usual controversial topics, it's great to talk to regular fans of sports I only watch once every four years at the Olympics. I could help with a forum as well, I think the community is big enough for it and there's a lot of interest in the Olympics Makedonas 1 As now we come across the world To share these Games of old Let all the flags of every land In brotherhood unfold

The problem is you very often don't react at all and tolerate some posts by certain users (1 or 2 in particular) who are very disrespectful to other users or some sportsmen, but you tend to delete some posts who are just reaction to this kind of behaviour. That's certainly a thing which should be improved. konig

That's certainly a thing which should be improved. I get your point. When you say I don't react and tolarate posts I accept the criticism, but it's not like I do that because I enjoy seeing provocations or because I don't care. I use it as a tactic, which maybe is not the best one everytime, but it's still a tactic. I find useless to permanently ban in the internet world (if not in case of spam), because I have no way to stop people to come back one day or one year later with another username, another IP etc. Deleting posts and keep an eye on "tricky" users, let's call them like that, allow me and the community to know who is writing it, it gives me the chance to moderate their posts when necessary, it gives users the chance to use the ignore function agiainst them so that their posts will not appear anymore. Banning them will not stop them, on the contrary it might increase their anger and frustration, they will get back to do what they did with another username, and if they are good and people can't recognize who they are, they will give the feeling there are even more people like them. Again, I'm not saying this is the best way to limit these situations, but I just wanted to explain my point of view. I know it's not easy but the best way, as in real life, is just to ignore them. rafalgorka
