thiago_simoes 1,359 Posted August 8, 2021 #321 Share Posted August 8, 2021 What a disappointing last day. Two silver medals and Canada got ahead of us... But we still have many reasons to celebrate. This was our best performance in total number of medals. In Tokyo, Brazil earned 21 medals compared to 19 in Rio, our previous best performance. We also tied our best performance in gold medals, 7, the same number we reached in Rio. 12th place is our historical record, while 13th in Rio was our previous best. We had our worst ever performance in beach volleyball, without earning medals. Volleyball only earned one silver medal, which is very disappointing. Judo brought home two medals, the lowest number in a long time. We had huge expectations in skateboarding, and even though we got three silver medals, it still feels kind of a letdown. Only one medal in surfing is also less than we expected. We were hopeful for medals in cycling, fencing and tennis for the first time. That only happened in tennis, and definitely not in the way we expected. Women's artistic gymnastics bringing home two medals, one of them gold, is a dream I was afraid I would never see becoming true. Three medals in swimming, one of them gold, is also something no one was expecting. Two medals in athletics was an interesting result. Boxing was our biggest surprise here, with three medals. No one expected that. Overall, a very interesting edition of the Olympics for Brazil. We reached our best ever result even though our athletes choked in a lot of events. It's kind of unreal. If we had better performances from some of our athletes, we could have earned at least 5 more gold medals. But I'm pretty happy the way it is. It's just too bad that in Paris we will be unable to reach these results. konig

A little bit sad but still quite excited when you engaged in this full process. It's an almost perfect OG for us with 38 golds and 88 medals with some breakthrough and some unexpected losses. But it's the beauty of sport and Olympics. Start to looking forward to Paris 2024 now. It looks like that lost gold medal in trampoline that you said no one would remember after three weeks will indeed be remembered for the rest of our lives. Vektor 3,177 Posted August 8, 2021 #323 Share Posted August 8, 2021 What I find interesting is that non-European nations climbed over us compared to Rio, but we have the same placement on the European ranking behind the "Big 5" of and the one mid-sized nation of . There's a big gap between these 6 European nations and the rest of Europe, is in the middle of that gap. The Dutch are now what countries like were not that long ago, they are now the country representing the mid-sized European nations (in terms of population) in the top10 of the medal table. The rise of Netherlands and fall of the Warsaw pact countries kinda represent how Western Europe has evolved over the years at the Summer Games while post-Soviet countries slowly lost their strength after the fall of communism. The Dutch are on the level in Tokyo where we were in Barcelona, for us that was the last time where we had a chance to realistically win 10+ gold and 30+ total medals, Tokyo might just be the start for Netherlands to win 30+ medals per SOG from now on. Hahaha. Indeed I almost forgot. If we have to find someone to blame, it will not be him or FIG. We know how FIG works, you can't have it all after receiving 4 golds from them. Look at Russia what happened to them after receiving 2 team golds. If we have to find someone to blame, no.1 should be Women's Volleyball, total unexpected boomed out. No.2 should be table tennis mixed double. You can only blame those sports fate on your own not by referees. konig and opruh

Well it doesn't help that the sports programme in the last 3-5 Olympics is more Western-flavoured. Have the programme from the 80s and results would be different. But like you said, adapting and adjusting is what is most important. As is financing and structure of course. If you are Romania and Bulgaria, you can't rely today only on traditions and natural talent, when The Netherlands, Canada, Norway, Switzerland etc. are investing in facilities, technology, youth.. konig and MagyarBabu
Tigercub 48 Posted August 8, 2021 #327 Share Posted August 8, 2021 It has been a memorable Olympic Games for our country winning our first ever Olympic Gold Medal and earning the most number of medals with 4 (1G - 2S - 1B). Tokyo will always be a special place for our athletes for it is in Tokyo where we won our first silver medal in 1964 and our first gold medal this year ❤️ I just hope we can sustain this in the next 3years going into 2024, have more potential medallists and improve further our performance in Paris. Thank you @Quasitand @Vektor! I really enjoyed reading ur posts in this thread. Thank You Tokyo! ??❤️ opruh, konig and Quasit 1 1

TBH it really seems like Brazil isn't that far away from being consistently in the top 10 of the medal standings, especially with the addition of two sports (skateboarding and surfing) where Brazil is historically one of the top country. Glad we beat you this time because I'm not sure when the next time's gonna be :P
NearPup 2,095 Posted August 8, 2021 #329 Share Posted August 8, 2021 Best medal-haul ever for Canada in a non-boycotted summer games, highest placing in the medal table since 1992, first team gold in a summer sport since 1908, two big stars (de Grasse and Warner) winning their first global title... this is definitively on the upper end of what Canada is capable of at the summer Olympics. pdr4332, intoronto and Makedonas
