On the contrary, I think Japan will get even bigger advantage now... A couple of unexpected golds could go a long way for the Japanese public.  Especially in a sport like judo. 8-12 golds?

well, I guess many people are overestimating Japan's fighters chance to survive pressure...

 

if we look at the Olympic Games in the last 20 years or so (since Sydney 2000), Japan always won only 3 or 4 gold medals in each of those Games, except for the extraordinary outcome in Athens 2004, when they won (thanks mainly to the 5 women's golds out of 7 events)...

 

tbh, I'd be really surprised if they win more than 4 gold medals in total this time...
